We’re Very Proud of Our Outpatient Program Graduates

In 1994, El Proyecto became a founding member of the California Primary Care Association. (CPCA). CPCA members provide comprehensive, quality healthcare

services, particularly for low-income, uninsured and underserved Calif-ornians. Over the last 25 years, CPCA has become the statewide leader and recognized voice representing the interests of California community health centers and their patients. Today I am proud to serve as Chair of CaliforniaHealth + Advocates (an affiliate of CPCA), the organization that represents more than 1,300 not-for-profit Community Health Centers (CHCs) and Regional Clinic Associations.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEfrom Corinne Sánchez

Danny Trejo Visits El Proyecto Staff

Our Panorama City Esperanza Clinic HIV Prevention and Education program conducted free screenings for the community at a local Walgreens store. Testing is performed in a private room. Test results are available in a minute. HIV Health Educator Ernesto Aldana and team members encouraged shoppers to get tested. Actor, community activist, restaurateur, the “Machete Man” himself, Danny Trejo stopped by to lend his support.

The Behavioral Health Outpatient Perinatal Program provides appropriate cultural and linguistic counseling for clients with substance abuse and mental health issues. Individual and group sessions are provided by drug-certified counselors. Our Outpatient program is a certified State of California MediCal Program. Forty-one clients who completed the program attended the first Annual Outpatient Graduation. Case Manager Virginia Bowsher, CADC II (above) presented a certificate to her client. Family members and friends congratulated and supported the graduates.

We provide in-house mammograms the last Thursday of every month. Mammography is the process of using low-energy X-rays to examine the human breast for diagnosis and screening. The goal of mammography is the early detection of breast cancer. The “Every Woman Counts” (EWC) program may provide coverage for these services. Call the clinic for more details. For more information about EWC please visit the website http://dhcs.ca.gov/EveryWomanCounts.

El Proyecto del Barrio, Inc. partners with Our Lady of Grace Parish and Temple Judea to offer citizenship workshops for community members. We held five (5) workshops at our locations. People are concerned and confused about immigration issues. El Proyecto is trusted to bring important resources and information to the communities we serve.

These workshops are an example of our continued commitment to the community. El Proyecto del Barrio, Inc. Board member Helen Madrid-Worthen works with Judy Rutt and her team at Temple Judea and Our Lady of Grace Church to organize the workshops.

El Proyecto is a long-standing member of the Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County. CCALAC helps its member clinics serve their patients in many areas. Each year they participate in California Primary Care Association’s “Day at the Capitol” for community clinics statewide. Chief Executive Officer Corinne Sánchez, Chief Operating Officer Mary Hernandez, and Medical Director Dr. Karmen Tatulian, MD met with Assemblymembers Luz Rivas and Adrin Nazarian in Sacramento. Day at the Capitol allows physicians, clinicians, board members, directors, and patients to engage in dialogue with legislators and their staffs about budget and legislative priorities impacting community clinics and health centers.

Partnering with African American Leadership Organization (AALO)El Proyecto works hard to bring services to diverse underserved populations across Los Angeles County. Studies show that African Americans and Hispanics have a greater risk to develop hypertension and diabetes. Our partnership with AALO brings health screenings, resources, and information to African American churches and other venues in the San Fernando Valley. It is a successful partnership. This work has a positive impact on many of the families we reach. AALO is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. They organized the first annual MLK Community Breakfast in 2008. Hundreds attend this free celebration each January including national, state, county and city elected officials. The Boys & Girls Club in Pacoima hosts this event. El Proyecto is a sponsor for the MLK Community Breakfast each year.
