Introduction
Dear student,
Congratulations! You successfully finished your first WebQuest and now you are ready to move into the second one. This WebQuest is a new challenge for you to test your previous knowledge on the Radio Communication System section of Module 3 of your study program: installation and maintenance of Sound and Image Equipment. I hope you enjoy this it and learn as much as you can from it!
Throughout this workshop, you will learn not only about concepts and procedures within the field of telecommunications, but also about how to read and interpret an Operational manual as a genre that will be very useful in your professional life. This Operational Manual corresponds to the Digital Multi meter, an instrument that will allow you to test sound and image equipment as part of the radio communication system.
Task
You will Scan and read the Operational manual of the Digital Multi Meter and
work with its content.
You will scan again the Disciplinary Text used in the first WebQuest to review
concepts used in the Operational Manual of the Digital Multi Meter.
You will analyze one section of the Operational Manual and work with its content as well as with its rhetorical
structure: Moves and Steps
Process
• Go to http://rocioisabel.wordpress.com/ and read the right column of the Blog. You will find a section named “Operational Manual Digital Multi Meter”. Click on the link and the file it contains.
• Take a look at the cover page of the Operational Manual and answer the following questions. Then create a Word document (document 1) and email it to [email protected] :• Have you ever heard about the
Digital Multi Meter?• What do you think you can use this
instrument for?• Can you mention the relationship
between this instrument and the Unit you studied during the first WebQuest? (Radio Communication System). What do you think might be the use of this tool?
Step 1:
Individual Work
Process• Now that you have tested your previous knowledge
about the purpose and use of the Digital Multi Meter you are ready to take a step further and work with the Operational Manual. Go to www.google.com and look for a definition of “Operational Manual”. In the same Website, look for a definition of “Digital Multi Meter” and find out what the purpose of this instrument is. Compare the definitions with your answers in the last exercise. Write your answers in a Word document (document 2) and email it to [email protected]
• Get together with a partner and quickly scan the Manual. Pay attention to the following aspects:• Does the Manual have any visual aids that might
help you understand what each section refers to?• Are there any words that may be familiar to you?
Do you remember where you read or listened to those words before? Have you used those words or concepts in Spanish?
• Does the Manual have sections? Is it divided into different parts? Why do you think it has been divided? Do you think the different sections have a specific purpose?
• Once you finish scanning the text, create a Word document (document 3) and write a short paragraph answering the last question mentioned above. Save a copy and email it to [email protected]
Step 2: Pair Work
Process
• Study the following chart about the rhetorical structure of the genre “Operation manual”. Read each section and pay attention to the structure in which each Macro Move and Move is realized and the communicative purposes of each Move and Step.
Step 3: Pair Work
ProcessMacro move 1. Preamble (PREA): Present the book and deliver useful information to read it.

Process• Now that you have studied the table
which represents the rhetorical structure of the Manual you are about to interpret, create a Word document (document 4) and answer the following questions. Then, email it to [email protected].• What is the Purpose of the first
Macro Move of this genre? • How many moves does the first
macro move have?• What are the structures in which
the Moves are realized in the Operational manual? Do they correspond to a section of the manual?
• What are the communicative purposes of the steps that form the Moves? Name the Move and their corresponding steps and then mention their communicative purposes. Organize the information in a table. In the next Slide you will find an example of the table.

Step 2:
• Congratulations! You have already analyzed the first macro move of the genre “Operational manual”. Now it’s time to put into practice what we have learned so far. So, let’s go straight to the manual. With your partner, take a look at the sections “Warranty”, “Contents”, “Introduction” and “features” of the Manual you downloaded from http://rocioisabel.wordpress.com/. Read carefully the four sections (they are very short) and answer the following questions :
• WARRANTY• Go to http://www.definitions.net/ and type
the following words : Warranty, defects, workmanship, purchase, return, replace, misuse. Look for a definition of each word and write them in a Word document. Email the document to [email protected]
• What is the multimeter warranted against?• What do you think is the purpose of this
section of the Manual?• What Move or Step of the first Macro Move
is represented through this section of the Manual?
Step 5: Pair Work
Process
Process
• CONTENT• What do you think the purpose of the “Content”
section of the Manual is? • What Move or Step of the first Macro Move is
represented through this section of the Manual?• INTRODUCTION• Is there a definition or description of the Digital Multi
Tester in the introduction section of the Manual? What is it said about this instrument? Write down a definition of the Digital Multi Meter.
• What type of measurement can you perform with the Digital Multi Meter?
• Is there a variety of Digital Multi Meters? How many Models can you find?
• Is there an image or table that helps understanding the text in a better way? What does it represent?
• What do you think is the purpose of the Introduction section of the Manual? What Move or Step of the first Macro Move of the Manual is represented through this section of the Manual?
Step 5: Pair Work
Process• FEATURES• What is the main feature of the Digital Multi Meter
mentioned in this section of the Manual?• Remember the Disciplinary Text you studied during the first
WebQuest? Do you recognize any of the concepts you learned in this section of the Manual? Which ones? Can you define them? If necessary, got back to the Disciplinary Text. You can download it from http://rocioisabel.wordpress.com/
• Once you finish answering the questions presented and following the instructions of Step n° 5 of this WebQuest process, create a Word Document (document 5) and write your answers. Email this document to [email protected] . • It is not necessary that you write again the first activity
of the “Warranty” section because you already sent it to the email and it will be part of the class glossary that will be published in our Website http://rocioisabel.wordpress.com/
• After you finish the previous activities, create a Mind Map that represents the rhetorical structure of the manual considering the first macro Move presented in this section of the WebQuest. The following slide will show you an example of a Mind Map that you can follow.

• In this section of the WebQuest you will form two groups: your teacher will divide the class into two groups. Each group will be assigned a section of the Operational Manual that has not been studied yet. These sections correspond to the main body of the Operational Manual and they are related to a specific Macro Purpose of the same. Once your teacher has divided the class and formed the two groups, follow the instructions corresponding to the section of the Manual you have been assigned. The next slides correspond to the instructions for each section.
