⚫ Transportation both in urban and suburban areas is unsustainable in terms ofcongestion, pollution, etc.

⚫ One-way electric-vehicle car-sharing systems, such as Car2go or Autolib, offer analternative for personal urban mobility

⚫ There are two million users of one-way car-sharing systems in Europe today and thisis predicted to rise to around 30% of the market within the next 20 to 30 years.

⚫ However, vehicle supply is unreliable: demand cannot be met on time and regular use is unaffordable for most people, due to the high cost of one-by-one redistribution and extensive charging infrastructure.

⚫ The development of autonomous vehicles may provide a solution to the redistributionproblem, but this is currently a considerable time into the future

The ESPRIT project

⚫ The ESPRIT project is developing a lightweight, L6 category, electric vehicle⚫ The ESPRIT vehicle has an innovative coupling mechanism that enables roadtrains of

up to 8 vehicles to be redistributed easily, thereby assuring availability, affordable use and enabling widespread implementation

⚫ Innovative charging mechanism allows charging of a road train from a single chargingpoint whilst prioritising the lead vehicle

⚫ The first protype vehicle has been completed, and there are two more under production⚫ The project will finish in October 2018

ESPRIT in city centres will be able to greatly improve the efficiency of existing one-way carsharing services, correcting the continual imbalance of distribution

with roadtrains to keep an optimum supply in all areas.With a reliable and affordable service ESPRIT is expected to double the present

average of vehicle uses per day to over 10, making them

totally viable without the promotional compensationrelied upon by the present OEM operators.

ESPRIT will be able to encourage downtowncongestion-free zones, by offering a vehicle to all,

when required.

ESPRIT services in suburban areas will be able to complement and extend

bus services, taking people to local PT hubs, railway and metro stations.

ESPRIT can adapt to demand. To maintain the supply of cars extra staff are

only needed during rush hours, unlike micro-bus shuttle services that need to

run empty sometimes to keep the service open. Like the bus services

suburban ESPRIT services are also expected to receive subsidies.
