FirmwareResource Group’s Embedded Systems and Solutions division has worked closely with clients to help them address the certification challenges of demonstrating that their complex PLD / FPGA implementation is functionally correct, robust and intrinsically safe.

Moore’s law observes that every 2 years the complexity of hardware doubles, and this allows users to add more functionality, often without considering how to realise, verify and certify the end-product.

The size and complexity of PLD / FPGA implementations now means that they can no longer be considered as simple systems but fall into the category of complex electronic hardware. When the verification and certification of these systems has not been carefully considered up front, then the effort to demonstrate the correct operation, (to standards such as DO-254, EN 50128, IEC 61508, ISO 26262-5 and Def Stan 00-56), can be very costly in both terms of duration and man-hours.
