President's Message

As summer becomes a memory, I hope that all of you have been renewed with energy and expectations for a great year. I extend a hello to all returning members and a special welcome to anyone new to the University Women's Club. This year, our Executive Board is ready to accomplish a lot and I hope that you will join them on one of the many committees necessary to make our 1999-2000 year one of the best. We have a wealth of interests to choose from and a wonderful schedule of social events to plan for and hope that we will see many of you involved.

You will notice that we have had to make some changes this year in the location of some of our events. Because of a grand scale renovation at the UMC, the facilities will not be available for the spring semester and we have had to go off campus for our Winter Party on 12 February 2000 and our Spring Event on 13 April 2000. More details will be made available at a later time but you will find a Schedule of Events in this Messages issue.

For now, though, we need to see all of you at our Membership Tea which happens on 21 September and I hope you will take the initiative of personally inviting any newcomers or friends who might enjoy learning about our club. Our desire to promote friendship and enjoy the many social activities is balanced by our assistance to returning students through our Scholarships and our service to the community through UWC's service projects. My sincere thanks to all of you who provide this organization with your strengths, energy and caring.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all at the Fall Membership Tea, 21 September, as we enter into our 81'1 year.

Susan Thomas, President

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I've got great news. As you know the Spring Event has been moving very slowly: that is. until everything started to come together. First of all, the construction on the UMC has been postponed until June and we were able to change back to the UMC for the event. Secondly, the board has decided that the auction was becoming far too much for us to handJe and so tltis year, the Spring Event will be a Fair highlighting home and garden , with merchandise available for us to buy or order for receipt at a later date . We plan to invite garden centers , gift shops and home shops to join our fair and provide us with a percentage of their profits as our way to raise funds for the scholarships . Of course we will still have our lw1cheon and honor our scholarsltip winners at that time. There is much excitement for this idea and even though it's a new concept, we're hoping for a fun-filled, successful day. More details later .

Since this is a double issue covering December and January , this will be the only time you'll be reminded about the Winter Part~·. The party, Swi11gin' 2000, will be a dinner-dance held at the Boulder Country Club on February 12u,. A dance instructor has been engaged to teach "swing dancing" so we can all participate on the dance floor . Look for the flyer in today's issue and get your checks and reservations in to Marsha Coons .

Reservations are also being taken for our February· Lecture Luncheon . Our speaker will be Dr. Carolyn Dow. The February luncheon will be held at the Universit~· Club at 11:30 and will be $11.00. Your check is your reservation. Send to Rachel Homer. I 9 IO Mariposa Avenue, Boulder, CO 80302.

I want to wish all of you a wonderful holiday season and look forward to seeing everyone in February at the luncheon and the Winter Party.

Life and Death in Ancient Nubia: Can the dead tell us how they lived, and how do we know what they are telling us is true? For the last 20 years, my students and I have been studying the mummified remains of over 400 individuals from Ancient Nubia - located in modern Sudan. Over 1500 years old, the remains reveal a remarkable story of the life and times of two ancient Nubian communities. The people of one village. located on an island in the Nile were landless and impoverished, while those living on the mainland were considerably better off. The human remains reveal tbe consequences of these economic differences on life expectancy and health - particularly among children. I will describe these remarkable remains and discuss how my students and I read tbe clues to the Jives and times of these ancient people . ·

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Well, I'm back in the swing of our season and hoping that all of you had really enjoyable holidays and are ready to take on the year 2000. My husband and I are still fighting about whether this is the new millenium or not, so I'm not even going there.

We do have lots to talk about, though, and I will start with the Spring Event. Remember last Messages I was so excited about our plan for tbe "Springfaire", bringing in merchants to show us the latest garden and home merchandise and giving us the opportunity to buy what we chose at our Spring Luncheon? Well, the University administration has not been very good about communication and when we tried to put this event together, we discovered all kinds of rules and regulations that we weren't informed about and that would make it impossible to carry out our plan. So we went back to square one and are planning another kind of afternoon. But, since the Board hasn't had time to finalize our plans at this writing, I don't want to say too much now. We Wil..L have our luncheon and some other fun things happening, so look for details in my March letter to Messages.

So let's concentrate on all the good things to look forward to in February. Our next Lecture Luncheon will be held on February 8th

with speaker Carol Dow. Rachel Homer is accepting checks and your check is your reservation.

Then, on February 121h, we hope to see all of you at the Boulder Country Club for our Winter Party. The.re's dinner and dancing, great music and a good time for all. Contact Marsha Coons for reservations.

I hope you'll take some time to propose a candidate for our special Margaret Willard Award, which will be presented in May at our Honors Tea. This is a good opportunity to give some special attention to someone who might be worthy of this honor. For information, contact committee chair Joan Lee Mikulas at 303-581-0954 or email to [email protected]. Deadline for nominations is March 1st •

I'll wrap this up for now. Details about the Spring Event in the March issue. See you all on February 8th for lunch .. · ·

For the last 20 years, my students and I have been studying the mummified remains of over 400 individuals from Ancient Nubia - located in modem Sudan. Over 1500 years old, the remains reveal a remarkable story of the life and times of two ancient Nubian communities. The people of one village, located on an island in the Nile were landless and impoverished, while those living on the mainland were considerably better off. The human remains reveal the consequences of these economic differences on life expectancy and health - particularly among children. I will describe these remarkable remains and discuss how my students and I read the clues to the lives and times of these ancient people.

MESSAGES

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Let me begin with thanks to Marsha Coons for everything that went into the success of the Winter Party in February. Everyone had a wonderful time and the food, dancing and Connie Farbach's clever decorations made for a memorable evening.

We're close on the heels of our Spring Event, Celebrate Spring. It's coming up April 18 and we're looking forward to a great day. We'll keep you busy with the buffet luncheon, fashion show by Talbots and our raffle fundraiser. We're collecting some really nice premiums for the raffle and all of the raffle proceeds will go to scholarships. Look for the flyer in today's Messages; invite your friends and get your reservations to Marsha Coons by April 12. $5.00 of your ticket price goes to scholarships and if, you're so inclined, any additional donations will too.

On that note, Judy Reid and her committee have chosen the scholarship winners for this year, and they will be presented at the Spring Event. Look for an article about the winners in today's issue of Messages.

Joan Lee Mikulas has been working toward the choice of some outstanding woman or women in our community, who will be presented with the Margaret Willard Award at our Honor's Reception, May 2, 3:00-5:00 at the President's Residence. That award is given to someone, nominated by one of our members, for their exceptional accomplishments; accomplishments that have enhanced the quality of life and provided benefit to women at the University of Colorado. Caryl Kassoy and Sheryl Kuempel are arranging the reception, so look for further details in this issue and plan to join us.

It's been a great season. There's more to come. Remember, the success of all of our events depends on member participation. We hope to see you soon at the Spring Event to enjoy, and share, and help expand our scholarship funds.

Susan Thomas, President

SPECIAL KUDOS

Winter Party

I want to thank those women who helped make the Winter Party the wonderful success it was . First, my deepest thanks goes to Maxene Wilson, who not only took on the job of copying and distributing the flyers at CU, but was my "right hand person" in all aspects of the planning of the event. She actively participated in the flyer design, menu selection, band selection, budget review, and the scheduling of all we had to do to make this event happen . I want to express my appreciation to Connie Farnbach for her creative decorations . She demonstrated skill in designing something low in cost yet attractive and easy to set up. Finally, I want to thank Beryl Clark for hiring the dance instructor for the evening. Even though Beryl herself could not attend the event, she took on the job of finding an excellent instructor to teach us swing dance steps .

Thanks also to all of you (all 122 of you) who attended and made the evening fun for everyone! We definitely had a SWINGIN' 2000 .

Marsha Coons, Committee Chair Spring Event

Many thanks to many people for bringing about the success of the Spring Event . There are so many who contributed their time to collect raffle donations, decorate the halls and provide everything we needed to enjoy this special day that unfortunately , I can't list everyone here, but I want you to know that your enthusiastic participation made it possible for us to raise a good amount of money for our Scholarship Fund and to have a great afternoon .

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Yesterday it was September, it seems, and I was just beginning my tenn as President of the University Women's Club. And now, in just an instant, we are coming to the last month of our 1999-2000 year and in many ways I'm really going to miss this time. I've· enjoyed everything we've done this year from the Membership Tea to the Spring Event. We had four deserving Scholarship winners and because of our fundraising efforts for this season, we can provide Scholarships for more students ne~ y~r. Everything comes down to the generosity of those of you who continue to support the UWC in our efforts: There have been many new members this year and I've met many existing members who were new to me. It's been a privilege to be your President and I want to thank my Board who contributed much in their time and ideas. A great deal of gratitude also goes to those "special events" coordinators who gave us a great social year with music, food, dancing aild interest groups to encourage our talents. All my best wishes go to the elected officers for 2000-2ooi : · ·

President: Nancy Brown Treasurer: Sherry Bruff Secretary: Karen Marley-Sture

The officers for 2001-2002, elected at the March Lecture Luncheon are:

President-elect: Ann Hager Treasurer-elect: Kathleen Brewer Secretary-elect: Sylvia Campbell

I'U be passing on the gavel to Nancy at the Honors Reception, May 2, 2000, which is to be held at the President's Residence from 3:00 to 5:00. We will then also meet our two Margaret Willard Award recipients and my choice for the President's Award this year. So see you then and have a great summer.

Susan Thomas, President

IN MEMORIAM

One of our long-time members, Imelda Hermes, was struck and killed on Saturday, April 8, 2000 as she was cycling with friends. Imelda joined the University Women's Club in 1966 and served as Treasurer several times. She also held board positions and was active in a number of interest groups. Her particular interest was the outdoors and she was an avid hiker, climber and bicyclist. One of her friends remarked that "Imelda's spirit was indomitable. Last February she invited feJlow members of her UWCs Investment Group to climb one of Colorado's Fourteeners with her this summer! She also loved traveling and came back last January from Mexico's Copper Canyon fu)l of energy." The University Women's Club was important to her and she was important to us and we wiJI miss her.
