t takes a brave person to throw out a brandnew kitchen. But having bought an elegantstone new-build house in an Oxfordshire village, Ann Bailey did just that. ‘I had to

think very long and hard about it,’ she recalls.‘But I couldn’t get away from the fact that, although the developer had designed andfinished everything in the house to a very highspecification, the kitchen just wasn’t my style.’

As someone who loves cooking andentertaining in her spare time, Ann, who volunteers for a charity, decided that thekitchen was to be a room in which she wouldbe spending a great deal of time, and it was worth investing to get it right. ‘When I doentertain, I tend to go over the top and invitetwenty people all at once, because I don’t liketo do things by halves,’ she laughs. ‘So it wasespecially important to me to make the kitchenlook good, feel congenial and work brilliantly.’

Walking past the brand new TeddyEdwards showroom in Oxford, Ann decided it was time for action. She popped her head

around the door – even though the showroom was barely finished – to tell the team howmuch she liked one of the displays she couldsee being built in the window. ‘It caught myeye immediately, because it was obviouslybeautifully made, traditional furniture, but with a lighter, simpler touch and very

clean lines,’ she explains. And it was DesignManager, Martin Postle, who took up thechallenge to create a more inviting andsociable kitchen for Ann’s new home.

Martin took one look at the existing kitchenspace and set about planning a better layout. ‘Icould see that it was essential to create a senseof flow around the room, and a better linkbetween the kitchen and dining area,’ saysMartin. ‘With light only coming in from oneend of the room, it was also important to createan open layout using fresh colours, so that it

didn’t feel as if light was struggling to get fromone end of the room to the other.’

His solution was to design a rectangularisland to link the kitchen to the dining area,as well as providing lots of prep surface anda sink, positioned to enjoy lovely views of thegarden, rather than the wall. Painted in a warm grey and topped with a natural-colouredCaesarstone quartz surface, the same palette isused on the far wall with its dresser cupboard,to house small appliances, and merchantdrawers below, for plenty of useful storage.

Ann, a lifelong AGA fan, chose a Total Controlmodel for its flexibility - it can be turned on andoff easily with a touch screen panel and isready to use quickly - and Martin designed acanopy above to create a focal point in theroom. ‘With so much light streaming into theroom from the glass doors, the room can get very warm, so it’s very useful to turn the AGAon and off as I need it, so that the heat isn’toverpowering,’ says Ann.

The finishing touch is a smart and ultra-practical section of tall, bleached oak

s a TV chef, food writer and brandambassador for Patak’s deliciousrange of curry pastes, sauces andchutneys, Anjali Pathak needs little

introduction. Her cookery classes are asell-out success and her recipes, from thearomatic Ultimate Tadka Dhal to richChocolate Cardamom Torte, are ever popular. And in between a hectic schedule of TV appearances, recipe development and travels, Anjali had one thing on her mind: her newhome. ‘I wanted to create a lovely environment where I could totally relax,’ she says.Moving from Bolton to the family apartment in

north London was one thing, the state of thedécor another. ‘It hadn’t been used muchover the years, so it needed refurbishing,’explains Anjali. ‘It was the kitchen I wasmost unhappy with, because it lookeddated and felt cramped – and, for me, it wasespecially important to get it right, becauseI knew I would be spending a great deal oftime cooking in it,’ she smiles.

After taking some photos and making a video of the existing kitchen on her phone, Anjali headed off to meet Diane Berry ofDiane Berry Kitchens in Manchester, not farfrom the family home. ‘I had been past her

showrooms many times and really liked hercontemporary style,’ she says of her choice.

Working long distance, the video reallyhelped Diane get a sense of the space and thepossibilities for the room, and she suggestedreplacing the units built all around the room with a radically different design. With a tallrun of units on one wall, and a streamlinedbase run underneath the window for a wetzone, Diane created a dramatic peninsula toform the focus of the room. ‘I knew that Anjalilikes to cook at the hob facing her friends orstudents if she is doing a demonstration, so thisarrangement works perfectly,’ says Diane.

‘An island would have been too small, as Anjalineeds plenty of work surface either sideof the hob when she is cooking and a peninsulaalso meant that we could continue on the samematerial up the wall, to draw the eye upwardsand create the illusion that the room ismuch bigger than it actually is.’

Calling on fellow kitchen specialist GrahamRobinson, of Halcyon Interiors The ALNOStore, Diane was able to hand over the project

installation to a local company. ‘It was vitalthat we could be on site to work out the precise

templating and fit of the Corian,’ explainsGraham. ‘We even carried the Corian on to the window sills to create an immaculate finishand made sure that every detail was just rightto emphasise the streamlined, modern design.’

The Corian Glacier White contrasts withthe graphite grey of the wallpaper and CarbonOak finish of the tall cabinets. A gentle sparklein the wallpaper adds a touch of glamour.‘I wanted to create the perfect place to come

hen Kirsty Hanley, her partnerJames and Dappy the dog movedinto their 1950s bungalow three years ago in the picturesque

village of Bridge in Canterbury, they knewthey had a challenging project on theirhands. ‘The décor was extremely dated andthe rooms were small, but we liked the areaand plot and bought it with a completerestoration in mind,’ explains Kirsty.

Plans included removing all the windows, replacing the roof and adding a second storeyextension which would triple the size of theoriginal property and turn it into a farmhouse-style four-bedroomed detached home. The sizeof the project meant that the family movedout in March 2011 and the works took just overa year to complete. ‘It was a massive overhaul, but we knew it would be worth it when wehad so much extra space to play with andcould create a home exactly to ourspecifications,’ explains Kirsty.

‘Luxury granite worktopsadd rich contrast to the

classic-style oak cabinetry.’

The kitchen was the main room Kirsty relishedthe chance to completely re-design and witha blank shell and large space to get creative

with, it was a dream situation. The previouskitchen left little to be desired with old-fashioned units, flimsy doors and a boxed-infeel. ‘It was just so horrendous before, that I wanted something really stunning this timeround and to show it off to the max,’ says Kirsty.

Through a recommendation, Kirstycontacted Davonport Kitchens and visitedtheir showroom in Colchester, Essex tosee if they could bring her dream kitchento life. ‘I instantly fell in love with the whole look of the place, the service and allthe stunning curved handmade furnitureon display,’ explains Kirsty. Sold by what she

had seen, Kitchen Designer Paula Watts visitedKirsty’s home to start discussing options.

Although open to ideas, Kirsty did have a

few requirements. It was a must that the newkitchen would be light and airy, with lots of  visible space, plenty of cupboards and thatclutter be cleverly disguised and out of sight.

After viewing all the soft curved furniturein the showroom, Kirsty was keen to introducenatural beauty to the scheme and liked theidea of having a kitchen that included aneffortless mix of wood and hand-paintedcabinetry. She was also particularly smittenby a circular ‘drum-style’ island and knew asimilar design had to make an appearance. After a few consultations, Paula’s vision wasclear. The new kitchen was to be a natural

fusion of traditional and contemporaryfeatures, full of practical storage solutionsand designed to be used and enjoyed, while

also complementing the beautiful newinterior of Kirsty and James’ home.

Classic-style oak cabinetry provides thecountry-style element that Kirsty craved witha stylish mix of natural wood and hand-painted units in the softest green finish. Thissubtle tone was selected to complementKirsty’s lush garden and to bring a sense ofthe outside in, especially as bi-fold doorsopen directly onto the outdoor space. Luxurygranite worktops add rich contrast to the pale wood, with an eye-catching splashback in thesame material highlighting the use of curvesthroughout. Expansive floor-to-ceiling

here was a moment when Michael andNicola Jones began to wonder if theyhad made a terrible mistake. Afterbuying their five storey period home in

central London, they were worried that theyhad bitten off more of a major refurbishmentthan they could possibly chew, especially when it came to the basement. ‘It was so

incredibly dark and gloomy,’ recalls Michaelof the two dank rooms and a chilly corridorthat made up the lowest level of the house.

But, they were determined to restore thehouse to its former glory and convert the drabbasement into a family living space to share with four year-old daughter, Anna. Resolved, the couple called in kitchen designer RobGelling, Director of Kitchen Architecture, and architects Michaelis Boyd Associates.‘We wanted a space for relaxed living andentertaining, that was relatively child-friendly,’ explains Michael. ‘We had lots of discussions about how to create an area

that would be a family living area, kitchen anddining area all rolled into one.’ The solution was to remove all the internal walls in thebasement, a major project in itself.

Instead of supporting columns, thestructure is supported by heavy duty steelbeams running across the width of the room.‘Although it involved a huge amount of structural work, it was worth it, because there

are now no barriers in the room, creating a very open feel,’ he says. By removing someouthouses, they were also able to extend outinto the area at the rear of the property, increasing the size of the room to itsimpressive 15 metre length. And, by excavatingoutside and building wide steps to leadgradually up to the pretty garden, they wereable to introduce much more natural lightinto the space, an effect enhanced by floor-to-ceiling glass bi-folding doors.

With the entire room painted white tocreate a simple, light environment, Robset to work to create a kitchen design that

would make the most of the dramaticallydifferent, new space. Rob’s response wasequally radical. ‘The obvious solution was tointroduce one long island, but apart from thefact that you see that such a lot, I felt it wouldmake the space feel long and narrow,’ heexplains. ‘I also felt that it would create a bit of

no-man’s land on one side, not large enough fora sofa or a dining table, so really a wastedspace. Instead, and to make the most of the width of the room, this two island concept sitsin the space beautifully, allowing the cook to

take centre stage between the dining andliving areas, which also makes the layout verysociable.’ The two islands, each clad in crispCorian Glacier White, create the prep andcooking zones. ‘This arrangement makes a very contained working area, with a 360degree view, yet it means that cooking can

take place safely out of the way of kids runningthrough to the garden,’ continues Rob. A sweepof tall units along one wall conceals all theappliances and masses of storage, blendinginto the TV area at the far end of the room, and

houses a simple, steel clad secondary preparea. Flush fitted into the wall, the clean-lined, white cabinetry almost disappears from view, enhancing the uncluttered effect.

‘I’m very glad we took the plunge andconverted the space,’ says Michael. ‘Callingin the experts was the best decision. It never

crossed my mind that we might have two widthways islands until Rob suggested it.Now the worst part of the house has beentransformed into the best – which really isn’tsomething you expect of a basement.’

HOMEMADE HEAVEN

verybody’s doing it these days and if  you’re not currently up to your elbowsin flour, you soon will be! Home bakingfever has taken the nation by storm,

thanks largely to the popularity of BBC2’s TheGreat British Bake Off, where every week thecountry’s top home bakers battle it out for thetitle of Best Amateur Baker. But it’s not juston the box where we can get our fix – kitchenshops and high street stores are selling a wonderful array of kits to entice us to brush upour skills. Neff has launched a Bake it Yourself (BIY) campaign on Twitter, which has achieved

an impressive 200,000 likes on Facebook sinceit began in March 2012. You may have boughtthe silicone muffin cases, brightly colouredspatulas and three-tiered cake stand to showit all off, but are your appliances up to the job?

WHICH OVEN?Built-in ovens are a good starting point. ‘Thereare a variety of ovens that can produce moistor crispy bakes,’ explains Danny Lay, SalesDirector at Caple. ‘It’s all about choosing theoven and functions that are right for yourneeds. Steam ovens are ideal for retaining

moisture but if you’re looking for the bestof both worlds, a combination steam oven isideal as you can benefit from a conventionalfan-assisted oven and grill, too. This type of heat will consistently cook through to themiddle, which makes it ideal for all typesof baking. For extra crispy results, look forconventional ovens that feature a grill plusbase heat, which is perfect for pies. While, for delicate baking, look for an electric oven with turbo conventional heat that providesfast and even heat distribution for excellentresults with pastries and bread.’

If you fancy yourself as the next celebritymaster baker, such as Paul Hollywood, it’sessential to choose an oven with a littlemoisture as Neil Pooley, Kitchen CategoryManager at Miele, confirms, ‘If the bread is

baked with little or no steam,’ he explains,‘the starches do not swell, the outer surfacedries out, the crust cracks and it will not staycrisp for long. All Miele ovens benefit fromMoisture Plus technology, providingspecifically timed injections of steam inthe first few minutes of the baking process,so that dough will rise more.’Some ovens come with dedicated bakingsettings such as special programmes for pastry, bread or fruit pies, as well as functions thatremove the need for blind baking.

Passionate baker, Maria Mayerhofer, hasfounded her own cookery school called Bake

with Maria which includes three KitchenAidTwelix ovens. ‘The tart setting bakes pastryto perfection,’ she says, ‘with no need for blindbaking and no soggy bottoms. For a thin crustpizza, the oven’s pizza setting bakes at a veryhigh temperature and produces a blisteredpizza crust. The secret lies in the even heatdistribution, professional functions designedfor each dish and a specially recommendedoptimum temperature.’

Other features to look for include largeoven capacities, four or five shelf positions, automatic pre-set recipes and self-cleaning.If you want to create more of a central

hub within the kitchen, then a range cookeris the right option for you. Choose a model with a multiple ovens including one forbaking and a warming drawer to get the mostfrom your cooker along with rapid heat-upand large oven interiors or capacities.

WHICH HOB?Hobs are also invaluable for home baking.Induction is the safest, most energy efficienthob, as well as offering extremely lowtemperatures for melting chocolate withoutthe need for a bain-marie. ‘The perfect

precision of induction is also advantageous for jam-makers,’ adds Richard Walker, Sales andMarketing Director for De Dietrich, ‘and thecooking temperature never fluctuates.’

Gorenje’s new IQCook induction hob usesIQ sensors to measure the cooking process andmonitor it accordingly. A small disc sensorplaced on the pan lid communicates withthe hob’s electronics and then automaticallyadjusts the operation of the hob, leaving youfree to get on with other baking tasks. It evenhas pre-set cooking modes for precise meltingof chocolate and steam cooking puddings.

WARMING DRAWERSWarming drawers are also creeping intodomestic kitchens, because they are perfect forproving dough and keeping bakes warm.Miele is currently marketing their warmingdrawer as a SousChef, Neil Pooley explains.

‘They can be also be used to prove bread, gently dry meringues or warm scones forafternoon tea,’ he says. ‘Look for models thatfeature temperature and time controls, allowing you to carefully monitor all aspects of  your bake/proving process from start to finish.’

MIXERSOnce you have your oven, range, hob and warming drawer in place, it’s time to turn yourattention to the appliance that brings it alltogether – the stand mixer. Offering robust, state of the art action, there are a variety of funcolours available. ‘Stand mixers have become a

real object of desire for the kitchen,’ confirmsGreg Easton, Acting Buyer for small electricalappliances atJohn Lewis. ‘A great helping handfor bakers, they offer quick results – whippingup meringues, cream or biscuits and breads.’

Whichever appliance you’re choosing, make sure it can also cope with everydaycooking tasks. ‘It needs to pull its weight and bea real multi-tasker,’ explains Lauren Abbott,Marketing Manager at Gorenje. ‘Hobs need a wide heat range to both melt chocolate and fry,and an oven should be able to create moistcakes, but also roast a joint for Sunday lunch.’FEATURE HAYLEY GILBERT

ESSENTIAL GUEST BATHS

hristmas is always a busy time wherethe continuous stream of house guestsseems never ending. Creating anenvironment where friends and family

can feel at home is an important factor and thisincludes providing space for them to carryout their ablutions without interruption. Aseparate guest bathroom is always desirableand may take the shape of a traditionalen suite arrangement within a bedroom, anadditional adjacent facility or even an openplan space within the sleeping area itself.

Whichever you have, it should offer an array offacilities designed to offer that all importantpampering experience. Depending on theconfiguration and size of the room, some guestsuites offer the luxury of installing a walk-inshower and separate tub, but generally withguest bathrooms tending to be more bijou insize, incorporating the full range of productsand accessories isn’t always possible.

This may mean making concessions andrather than trying to squeeze in both a bathand a shower for the sake of it, opt instead

for either a generous showering space or asumptuous bath, perhaps with an integralshower in a suitable position. However, if making such compromise is difficult, thenconsider investing in some of the morecompact bathroom solutions which are morethan equal in terms of practicality – andcertainly don’t lack in terms of style. ‘Sinceguest bathrooms are usually fairly small, it’simportant to use products which are cleverlydesigned to maximise your room’s potential,’says Claire Surplice, Marketing Manager, atIdeal Standard. ‘It’s also worth consideringincluding products which are designedto utilise often overlooked corner spaces.’

Regardless of size, one vital ingredient toensure the bathroom flows well is the layout.Certainly in smaller spaces, it’s also importantto make sure that every element workstogether in terms of scale so that the spacelooks inviting rather than cluttered. Wall hungmodels and compact designs are ideal to create

an illusion of space while more curvaceousdesigns will help create a softer, less obtrusiveand more welcoming feel. For those with a tub within a bedroom, then the luxury of spacemeans you can really go for the wow factor   2

with a statement bath or striking wash zone.‘Whichever bedroom/bathroom configuration you have, you need to think not just about thelayout of the sanitaryware, but also the mainfocal point when you enter the room,’ advises

Alex Walmsley, Senior Designer at Ripples.‘Often the doors are left open, so place the WCsomewhere a little more private and tuckedaway so it won’t be seen from the bedroom.’

Storage is another all important aspect – not just to create a positive, clutter-free firstimpression, but also so that your guests feel thespace is their own to use. ‘Plenty of set downspace or open shelves to store wash bags isessential, a large towel rail or rack to store various sized towels is also something toconsider,’ says Hayley Tarrington, CreativeDirector at Plug in Design. Bedroom design is embracing statementsize which exudes luxury in the same way that space does. As the tumbling sales of the traditional size double bedreflect, small is terribly passé – statement size is now. And top bed retailers like And So To Bed reflect this trend.Their most popular bed is the 180 x 200 cms ( 6’0 x 6'6") andthe traditional standard double is down to only aroundeight per cent of their total sales. It iscertainly what most customers are asking for.’

Further endorsement comes from Louise Bradley,an Interior Designer renowned for her timeless and

elegant style. ‘I think a large bedroom is a necessity, nota luxury! We tend to spend so much time in bed – it’sestimated at about one third of our lives – so I alwaysfocus on creating a luxurious, calming space.’

It goes without saying that it helps enormously if yourbedroom is already a large room and has good proportions,as Louise explains, ‘Oversized headboards work very well with high ceilings and full length simple curtains whichframe windows but don’t detract from the scale of the

Statement size can work really well in smaller roomstoo, but it’s important for storage to be built in without anyextraneous detailing on the doors, so the cupboards readas continuous wall space and add a real sense of space and

WARM SPECIAL

The sound of crackling wood, natural textures and splashes of richcolour will all conjure a feeling of cosiness in the heart of your home

Whether or not there has been a

sprinkling of snow outside,

there’s nothing like stepping

indoors out of the chilly winter

weather into a kitchen that warms your heart.

Hot drinks and wholesome snacks form the

perfect antidote to frosty winter days, making

the kitchen your first retreat. And with the

festive season still in full swing it makes it all the

more important to create a cosy and appealing

aura that will make guests feel at home too.

STOVES

Stoves are perfect for gently radiating warmth

throughout the whole house and it’s at this time

of year that they really come into their own.

This type of fire not only blends comfortably

into both modern and traditional homes, but

they also work really well in open-plan layouts

that segue into living or dining spaces. In

new-build projects, installing a double-sided

fireplace that has one side facing the kitchen and

the other side open to the living-dining area is

becoming increasingly popular. Look at models

from specialists such as Morsø ( pictured ),

Diligence, The Platonic Fireplace Company and

Acquisitions for high performance fires

that perfectly marry practicality with beauty.

AboveBloom Collection Terra flooring in

natural cork, from £67 per sq. m, Granorte.

Contemporary range cookers now combine

traditional cast-iron beauty with innovative

features such as multi-functional and

independently programmable ovens. Providing

the finishing touch to any family or buddingchef’s kitchen, there’s also a variety of shades,

shapes and sizes for complete flexibility to fit

in any scheme. The latest designs blend in with

steel and enamelled range cookers and other

appliances, and of course, when alight they will

add not just physical warmth, but a colourful

glow as well. With a choice of electric, gas, oil,

fuel or wood burning ovens there’s something

for everyone and for all styles of cooking.

WARM FLOORING

Kitchens can feel as warm as toast, thanks

to hi-tech triple glazing, underfloor heating

and high specification insulation.

The type of flooring you choose has a

massive effect on the overall look and feel in

your kitchen, and an obvious suggestion is to

avoid harsh, reflective tiles and to select rich

wood-tone flooring, timber or natural stone

flags. Either can be used with underfloor heating,

and whether your preference is for dry or wet

heating systems, there will be something to

suit. Harvey Booth, Sales & Marketing Director

at Kahrs UK Ltd, emphasises that ‘rich toned

timber really brings a kitchen alive and createsa real feeling of warmth. It also provides a

fabulous backdrop to contrasting modern

kitchens and furnishings, allowing them to

stand out without looking stark’.

Cork flooring is making a comeback and

has superior thermal properties so it’s great for

creating a cosy atmosphere – it is also suitable

to use with underfloor heating.

WARM SPECIAL

USING TEXTURE

Texture will add interesting layers and help

balance out angled edges of worktops, cabinetry

and appliances. Wood has always been a

traditional choice for cabinetry and can provide

texture through the type of grain you choose,

whether you go for a distressed or classic look.

Units made from maple will provide a relatively

smooth grain and the rich tones of real

timber or laminate wood effects will instantly

take the cool edge off a white scheme bycreating an interesting contrast.

When considering finishes for fixtures and

fittings, it’s good to steer away from polished

chrome and stainless steel as the reflective

surfaces can feel cold. Instead, opt for

aesthetically pleasing ceramic sinks and matt-

finish faucets which radiate a natural charm.

You can also offset a kitchen’s hard look with

an inviting dining area including luxurious

upholstered dining chairs in leather, suede or

natural fabrics. Soft furnishings, as their name

implies, will often add warmth to a scheme.

Plump cushions, warm throws and tablecloths

are simple but effective choices. If you have a

period property or interesting features, such as a

brickwork wall or wooden beams, you can make

the most of these by keeping them exposed –

natural textures have an imperfect look which

will bring out the character of your home.

WORKING WITH COLOUR

Working in harmony with texture, rich warmcolours can promote a feeling of comfort

and they often work well as accent hues to

create depth. Hot, Mediterranean colours such

as red, orange, yellow, deep pink and burgundy

are believed to be both stimulating and

soothing for our emotions. Rob Whitaker,

Brand Director at Fired Earth comments,

‘Layering colours and textures will create a

really inviting scheme. Colourful cabinetry is

the perfect foil for rich but subtle paint, tiles

and accessories, while wooden or earthy-toned

cabinetry forms a versatile backdrop to vibrant

splashbacks or mood-enhancing paint colours

such as Fired Earth’s Festival Orange and Race

Yellow. Paint is particularly easy and

inexpensive to change so be bold with colour

and you’ll be amazed how your kitchen

instantly feels warmer and more welcoming.’

Repetition of colour or pattern in

accessories and furnishings is a great way to

tie a room together. Choose two or three key

accent shades and pick them out in your

choice of blinds, table linen, cushions,

crockery or splashback tiles, for example.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

Even on the coldest of winter days, the beauty of

the sun shining through your kitchen windows is

always going to put a smile on your face. Letting

natural light in is the best way to create a

welcoming and spacious feeling in any room, but

it’s perhaps the most important in the kitchen.

Good lighting is a key element in adding

warmth and conviviality to the kitchen. It is

important for preparation areas as well as for

creating a relaxing ambience for serving and

entertaining guests in. Naturally space-

enhancing, lighting can make rooms look bigger

and brighter. If you’re buying a new kitchen, lookfor designs that come with built-in lights, for

example cooker hoods and cupboards. Ensure

that you have a high level of task lighting at

the sink, the oven and worktops especially.

When it comes to creating ambience, it’s

difficult to under-estimate the difference that

dimmer controls and sparkling pendants can

make. Joe Burns, co-founder of Oliver Burns

comments, ‘There is no reason why you can’t

play with different lighting settings and styles

in the kitchen. Dimmer switches and mood

lighting will create warmth especially if you

have an eat-in kitchen or a breakfast bar. You

can create a lighting plan that creates a natural

sociable gathering point. If you have an island

in your kitchen, consider a grand lighting

statement that you’d usually reserve for the

living room or the bedroom – a chandelier,

for example will emit a naturally warmer

light than harsher, overhead lighting.’

So, from choosing modern finishes and

a mixture of textures to setting the right

atmosphere, you can ensure that your kitchen

is everyone’s favourite gathering spot.

‘Your choice of lighting canmake rooms of all shapes and sizes

look bigger and brighter.’

EARTH Achieve a contemporary, country look with naturalmaterials and rustic touches

FURNITURE FINISHES

Emphasise the link between raw, textural finishes and modern

furniture. Use timber cabinetry with tactile work surfaces,

or include a simple set of tables with chairs or benches. There

are several opportunities to use rough-hewn elements in the

kitchen, now a very modern look, a million miles away from

the yellowy-pine of years ago – tones tend to be moving into

the grey-neutral spectrum, with planked-effect construction.

If you can get your hands on a well-worn butcher’s block to

use as a work station, so much the better – look in salvage

yards and antique markets for one of a kind pieces to treasure.

WALLS

Earthy shades can be a perfect backdrop if you’re going for

a very traditional look, perhaps in a period home. However,

if you want a more current take on natural shades, think

about pale and fresh greens or rich ivories that err on the

grey side, rather than towards the Victorian yellowy creams

and beiges. Mauves, heathers and plums can add a moderntwist as well – think of a matt, tweed-influenced colour

palette. Kitchen designers love the contrast of a slick, modern

kitchen in a classic setting and this can work well, especially

if original period architectural details are still present.

BASINS & CABINETS

Solid surface material with the look of stone, or even real

stone basins are a popular choice, offering a practical and

realistic way of introducing tactile and natural materials into

the bathroom. Timber cabinetry, as with kitchens, also brings

in a neutral angle, and slightly textured wood surfaces are

often a lot more forgiving than glossy lacquers and laminates.

For a real back to nature feel, think about a solid teak or iroko

Japanese-style tub, or one of the latest wooden basins.

SURFACES

With the latest powerful showers featuring a strong spray,

it’s important to protect exposed surfaces. Tiled splashbacks

are a reliable choice for behind the basin and in the shower

area. For flooring, choose rigid vinyl tiles, planks or ceramic

tiles with the appearance of wood. Plus, to create a fully-clad

look for counter tops, walls and floors, look at solid surface

materials and quartz tiles in soft neutral colours like

mushroom, grey-beige and soft, mossy greens.

TAPS & FITTINGS

As with kitchens, there’s delight and surprise with contrasting

styles and the desire to create a modern country bathroom

can accommodate beautiful, elegant taps and fittings. The

‘country’ element can be enhanced by use of materials that

connect with your home’s surroundings. Chrome or steel

brassware and white sanitaryware is a simple choice, or use

rich timber finishes for cabinetry. Consider textured wall

finishes and veneered wall panels which can look stunning.

FLOOR OPTIONS

The choices are endless with real woods, stone, engineered

flooring and very effective rigid or cushioned luxury vinyls

incoporating stone and wood features. Flooring is often one

of the biggest surfaces, visually speaking, in the kitchen andbathroom, and can literally ground the scheme. The

advantage of choosing earthy, natural tones, colours and

textures for flooring is that it’s an investment buy, and it

will work with future decorative changes.

llegra Hicks, known forher exquisite painterlyfabrics and designs, studied textiles and

art in Milan and New York. Shelaunched her first range of rugsand textiles in 1996 and nowdesigns for The Rug Company. Shehas recently collaborated withMade.com to produce an armchairin one of her signature fabrics.Born in Turin, she moved toLondon following her marriage todesigner Ashley Hicks, son of Interior Designer David Hicks andgrandson of Lord Mountbatten.

Allegra still lives in London with the couple’s two daughters, Angelica, 20, and Ambrosia, 15.

What is your favourite room?My dining room. I radicallychanged it a year-and-a-half ago, covering the walls in raw silkand having it embroidered withbeaded roses. The fireplace isactually made of MDF but Ipainted it with layers of oilpaint to give this marble effect.

What is your kitchen style? The kitchen I have designedat my other home in Naples

is quite decorative. There is an18th century console with mirrorand lots of glass and I’ve used anold table and combined it with wicker Pantone chairs.

What made you decide to paredown your business?I wasn’t well a couple of years agoand it led me to re-evaluate. I let goof many of the unimportant anduninteresting stresses and decidedto focus on the element I love most which is the design. I am so lucky

because I get up in the morningand I love what I do and loving your work is heaven.

Have you ever designedfurniture before?I did the little table and consolesin my home years ago. I decided todo a chair in my fabric designbecause everyone needs a smallarmchair that can be tucked awayin a corner of the house. I like therounded shape – inspired by a GioPonti sofa – because, like my

fabrics, it doesn’t pinpoint aspecific period and fits anywhere.

What is your colour palette?Organic colours are my signaturestyle – blues and greens; neutral without being beige. I love watercolours and all mydesigns begin life that way.

Should design be expensive?Good design is good design andis nothing to do with price. If youthink about it, product designevolved after the industrialrevolution to provide massproduced furniture for people who could not afford antiques orhandmade one-off items.

Some of my favourite items inmy home, like a stool in my sittingroom or coloured glasses in mykitchen, were finds in randomshops and markets.

Are you an internet junkie?I love using the internet forresearch but I don’t tweet. I takepictures and do Instagram. I thinkin images, so it feels natural toexpress myself in pictures.

Which country do you

find most inspiring?India. I went there on myhoneymoon for the first time andremember feeling completely athome. People there live very closeto one another and the senses areheightened. The aesthetic is very inspiring, the history isfascinating and the philosophyeven more so –I also adore thecombination of new and old inIstanbul and the beautiful textiles.

English or Italian?

My work ethic is Anglo-Saxon butmy upbringing and sensibility isItalian. I came here in my earlytwenties and learned how to dressin London. Everyone says Italiansdress well but they dress veryconventionally; people in Londonare much more original. Thereis an edge of eccentricity anduniqueness that I value andunderstand and has becomea part of my way of life.allegrahicks.com
