Books How are they arranged?

Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)

The main Middlesex University campus

libraries (Hendon and Trent Park)

all use the Dewey classification scheme

Each subject has its own subject number

as follows:-

But remember …….

Shelf numbers...

Tourism Leisure Hospitality Festivals Travel etc.....

While the main shelf number for “tourism” is 338.4791, there will be relevant books in many other shelf locations and on different floors in the Sheppard Library eg. history, geography, religion, culture etc.

Hence the importance of using the Library Catalogue effectively………

The Library Catalogue

The Library Catalogue lists all the

material, books, journals etc. Held in

all the Middlesex University Libraries

You may use any campus library, and

you may request books from other

campuses through the Library Catalogue

which can be sent to whichever campus

is most convenient for collection

The catalogue includes several different searchtypes.

Each is useful depending on the information available to start with.

Try the following 3 examples and decide which of the listed search types is most appropriate for each – using the information provided.

• Find “Marketing for hospitality and tourism”

• Find a book on tourism and poverty

• Find an ecotourism book by Jennifer Hill

Best options would be:-

For the first, where the title is fully

known, use Title A-Z

For the second where a topic is

known, use Title Keyword

Where a part title and author are

known, use General Keyword

The Name Keyword search is also useful if there are 2 authors for a book and where the full title is unknown.

Logging in to My Accountb

~ as stated below, use your student number (M000...) as your ID and your date of birth in 6 digits for your Pin.

Renewingn

~ tick the books you wish to renew and click to Renew. Also check books on your account, requested items and personal details.

~ as before log in with you student number and date of birth. Select which campus to collect from and note your position in the queue. Click to Request.

Journals How are they arranged?

Print Journals are arranged:-

Alphabetically by the exact title of the journal.

Within each title, journals are arranged:

overall by date : volume number : part/issue number

The vast majority of our journals are

now provided electronically and

accessed through the Library Catalogue

Print journals are located on the

2nd floor in the Law Wing

Print or Online?

To check availability of journals, use the library catalogue.

If available in print form, the catalogue will tell you whichcampus holds the journal with details of years covered.

If available online, there will be a blue link to the available online issues of the journal with details of years covered.

Not all journals are available online,

availability is dependent on the library

having a subscription to the journal
