Our little business that started in my Mama’s

kitchen soon expanded to a 2,000 square foot

storefront and production center. We upgraded our

equipment and eventually began making 40-50 lb.

batches at a time. Our retail store was open 362

days out of the year and we taught soapmaking

classes every Saturday. Our customers became our

acquaintances, friends and even family. Our little

family business, Prairie Soap Company, became a

fixture in our community. Our mission, beyond

making premium handcrafted soap, was to promote

a sense of belonging in our community.

These 75 essential oil blends for cold-process soap

are Prairie Soap Company’s best sellers. Over the

course of 10 years, these soap scent blends found

their way to homes across the country through our

retail, wholesale, and online presence. From the

very bright and simple to the deep and complex,

these blends comprise hours of study, trial and

error. These 75 blends were crafted week after

week, month after month.

In addition to my first business, Prairie Soap

Company, LLC, a handful of the essential oil blends

in this book have made their way into the products

of my latest company, The Imperial Drifter. The

Imperial Drifter Grooming Company is a men’s

grooming company that utilizes the abundant

qualities of natural oils for the grooming needs of

men. A brand geared towards men, formulated by a

I N T R O D U C T I O N

I’ve been making soap since the summer of 2007.

My very first batch was made with my Mother,

Sheila’s supervision, as she had been making soap

since I was in middle school. After learning how to

saponify 12 lbs. of fatty acids, I was hooked. About

a month after my first batch of soap was cured,

Prairie Soap Company, LLC was established, and

myself, my Mother and my Brother became the

managing members. Every morning I would drive to

the house I grew up in and make batch after batch

of soap with Mom. I would cold-call stores for

hours, asking for a sale. We would make, cut,

package and label our soaps, day after day, working

festivals and markets year-round until the point of

exhaustion.

From 2007 to 2012, we established a large

wholesale clientele. Though we started with local

grocery stores, boutiques and gift shops, towards

the end of 2012 we had established ourselves in

health food chains stores such as Whole Foods

Market, Lucky’s, Sprouts and Vitamin Cottage’s

Natural Grocers. Over time we realized that our

demographic was one that cared about naturally

scented products, so we began to solely catering to

those brands.

The Imperial Drifter scent blends, along with many

of the blends from Prairie Soap Company, are

anchored with both spicy and woodsy notes. In my

experience, I have found that even when pursuing

brighter, softer notes in a blend, it is important to

ground them with deeper notes, even if a small

percentage. I believe this is one of the reasons

these 75 scent blends have been so successful for

the last decade.

I hope you enjoy the blends, and I encourage you to

also seek out your own upon reading and blending

some or all in this book. Thank you.


The typical usage rate for essential oils in soap is

3-6% of soapmaking oils.

I personally use the rule of .5-1 oz. per pound of

soapmaking oils or 15-30 grams per 450 grams of

soapmaking oils. Working with grams is easier

when calculating blends of essential oils. 450

grams equals about 1 pound.

Here are some examples on how to calculate your

essential oil blend for a recipe.

Let’s say you have a 32 oz. soapmaking oil recipe.

32 oz. equals about 907 grams (you can Google

ounces to grams and a calculator will pop up).

Let’s round to 900 grams for simplicity.

You can use 30-60 grams of an essential oil blend

in 900 grams of soapmaking oils.

How do you know how much to use? It really is a

matter of preference. I typically use the higher

amount except when there are spices, mints and

tea tree involved. These essential oils are quite

strong and should be used lightly.

Let’s pretend that we want to use the Juniper

Mint blend in a 900 gram or 32 oz. batch of soap.

USING THE BLENDS IN YOUR SOAP

SAFETYNOTE:

Juniper Mint Blend

Juniper Berry 80%

Cinnamon Leaf 10%

Peppermint 10%

If you want to use the higher amount of the

blend for a strong scented soap, you would times

each percentage by 60 grams.

Juniper Berry 80% = 48 grams

Cinnamon Leaf 10% = 6 grams

Peppermint 10% = 6 grams

If you want to use the lesser amount of the blend

for a lightly scented soap, you would times each

percentage by 30 grams.

Juniper Berry 80% = 24 grams

Cinnamon Leaf 10% = 3 grams

Peppermint 10% = 3 grams

When using essential oils, you should familiarize yourself with IFRA guidelines to make

sure you comply with recommended usage rates per essential oil. You can find more info at

www.ifraorg.org.

Run your essential oil blends through the website eocalc.com. This online calculator will

tell you how much you can safely use in your products.


These first 16 blends are basic blends for soapmaking. They use more common essential oils such as

lavender, peppermint and citrus oils. The more complex blends start on the next page.

for notes in case you want to tweak the formula a bit.
