Vignette types and their validity period

You can easily fi nd the right vignette for cars and motorcycles: 1-year, 2-month and 10-day vignettes are available.

The 1-year vignette for 2017 is valid from 1 December 2016 to 31 January 2018 inclusive. The 2-month and 10-day vignettes are punched by the vendor on purchase. Important note: These vignettes are invalid if not punched.

How to remove an old, expired vignette quickly and easily:The best method is to lift one corner with a glass or vignette scraper and then pull off the vignette. Moisten any residue with water and wipe off with a clean cloth.

HAVING BOUGHT YOUR VIGNETTE, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO DISPLAY IT CORRECTLY ON YOUR VEHICLE.

How to affi x the car vignette correctly: The vignette should be clearly visible on the inside of the windscreen (we recommend the top left corner or close to the rear view mirror). Important note: Do not affi x the vignette in the visor strip!

How to affi x the motorcycle vignette correctly:The vignette should be affi xed to a clean and, most importantly, permanently-mounted section of the motorcycle (e.g. fork tube or fuel tank). Important note: Do not affi x your vignette to the trunk or a side bag!

Which vehicles need to display a vignette? Vehicles (cars, mobile homes, motorcycles) up to

and including 3.5 tonnes maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW).

Where does the mandatory vignette requirement apply?

Mandatory tolls apply to all motorways and highways in Austria.

Do vehicles with interchangeable license plates each require their own vignette?

Yes. It is a statutory requirement that the vignette is associated with the vehicle, rather than with the license plate.

Do I need an additional vignette for a trailer or trailer home which is towed by a car?

No, as long as the towing vehicle is no more than 3.5 tonnes GVW, the vignette on the towing vehicle will suffi ce.

Is the mandatory vignette requirement monitored?

Yes, compliance with the mandatory vignette requirement is monitored: by ASFINAG‘s toll enforcement units, the police and by automatic vignette cameras.

It makes sense to buy a vignette: Anyone caught by the police or ASFINAG without a valid vignette, pays a fi ne on the spot – €120 for cars, and €65 for motorcycles. Anyone refusing to pay this fi ne is

informed that they could be liable for a penalty of up to €3,000 following legal action.

Are vignettes mandatory for rest stops on the motorway?

Yes; vignettes are also mandatory for rest stops which are also accessible from places other than the motorway.

What are special toll routes? Routes with very high construction costs (tunnel,

bridges or mountain passes) are fi nanced by special toll rates.

TIP: With a valid annual vignette, you can save €40 by purchasing an annual card for special toll routes.

What should I do if the windscreen gets cracked or the car is wrecked?
