The Essential Violin.

The violin (the smallest of the string f amily, which also includes viola, cello and double bass) can beplayed with a bow, or its strings plucked. However you choose to play this glorious instrument, itsbeautiful sound tugs at the heartstrings. Its mellifluous tone has been put to good use in a v ariety ofstyles of music, from classical to jazz, to contemporar y, even hard rock!

The origin of the word ‘violin’ can be traced to the Latin ‘vit ula’, which means stringed instrument, andit’s thought that this is also the origin of the w ord ‘fiddle’. The first modern violin is said to ha ve beenmade in 1555 by Andrea Amati; there’s some doubt about the actual date, but it seems Amati didindeed create the form of instrument we know today. The centre of violin making was the Italian cityof Cremona, home not only of the Amati family but also of the Guarneri and Stradiv ari clans. In fact,these Italian violins (made between the mid-1500s and the mid-1700s) are some of the most priz ed inthe world. The record price for a musical instrument is for a violin – US$3.9 million (a Guarneri del Gesù)!

This double CD features a wonderful array of classic violin melodies from both the classical and jazzgenres. No collection would be complete without an excerpt from Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons– the first movement from his ‘Spring’ Concerto opens this 30-trac k set. Other well-known composersfor violin, such as Brahms, Beethoven, Paganini, Kreisler and Sarasate are also included here.Alongside these mainstays of the violin repertoire are some lesser-known gems by such composers asKorngold, Albéniz and FA Schubert. Also on this deluxe set are two Gershwin classics, ‘It Ain’tNecessarily So’ and ‘Summertime’, in delightful arrangements by Jascha Heifetz, one of the greatestviolinists of all time.
