Manufacturing SitesEssity operates six manufacturing sites in the UK producing branded and own label paper products for the UK market including Cushelle toilet roll, Velvet toilet roll, Tork paper products, and Plenty household towel.Employing around 1,000 people, Essity’s manufacturing sites operate a leading apprenticeship programme as well as offering graduate and internship opportunities.

Essity’s Manchester mill is an integrated site meaning thatit makes paper and converts it into products that are ready to be sent directly to customers. Brands made in Manchester include Plenty household towel and Cushelle toilet roll as well as ownbrand labels for major UK customers such as Asda and Tesco. The mill employs approximately 148 people and is situated onTrafford Park, Europe’s largest industrial estate.

Prudhoe is Essity’s largest site in the UK and is also an integrated site. Employing around 400 people, Prudhoe makes brands such as Velvet, Cushelle and Tork. Prudhoe also makes own brand label products for UK customers such as Asda.

After being mothballed in 2008, Essity’s Tawdmill was recommissioned in 2017 following a £12m investment and now makes premiumTAD (Through Air Dried) tissue paper thatis converted at other sites into products such as Cushelle. Tawd employs around 42 people.

The Skelmersdale mill is a convertingsite that buys in paper from other Essitysites and converts it into Tork products as well as some other own label products.Tork is Essity’s leading business-to-business hygiene brand found in restaurants, hos-pitals, schools, stadiums and other public venues throughout the world.

Essity’s Stubbins paper mill first started making paper in 1911 and now makes quality paper primarily for our Skelmersdale site. Stubbins makes paper using 100% recycled fibre and employs approximately 64 people.

The Oakenholt site has been recorded as a paper mill dating back to 1875.It now produces toilet tissue, facial tissue and paper towels for the UK market including, brand labels such as Quilted Velvet and Triple Velvet and also private label products for Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, Wilkinson, Lidl and Costco. The mill also makes paper products for customers including Bunzl, Jangro, Asda and the NHS.

Essity has sales and marketing functions to support our brands and our customers as well as a number of support functions including HR, IT, customer services, and procurement.Offices

Essity’s Manchester Airport office is the home of our Consumer Goods business unit representing brands such as Cushelle, Velvet, Plenty, TENA, and Bodyform. The Consumer Goods team is also where we support our retail customers including Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Lidl and more.

Dunstable is home to our Professional Hygiene business unit, and our Health & Medical Solutionsbusiness unit. The Professional Hygiene team primarily focusses on the Tork brand and supporting our business-to-business customers with outstanding products and first-class service. The Health & Medical Solutions team supports customers including the NHS with a range of products under the TENA brand helping patients manage incontinence issues.

To support our business in Ireland, Essity has an office in Dublin where our marketing and sales team support our Irish based customers.

Hull is where our team specialising in Compression Therapy, Wound Care and Orthopaedics is based. Brands include JOBST®, Delta-Cast®, Cutimed®, Actimove® and Leukoplast®.

Cushelle toilet roll is made using TAD (Through Air Dried) paper making it irresistibly soft. Variants of Cushelle include Cushelle Original, Cushelle FreshLinen, Cushelle Double Rolls, and Cushelle Quilted.

Velvet toilet roll is a soft but strong 2-ply toilet tissue available widely throughout the UK. In 2017, Velvet reached the milestone of planting it’s 10 millionth additional tree courtesy of its Three Trees Promise whereby three new trees were planted for every one used to make Velvet toilet roll.

Bodyform believes that anybody that menstruates should be able to live fearless. Through multiple CSR initiatives and advertising campaigns Bodyform is spearheading the fight against period poverty and breaking the taboo that surrounds menstruation in the UK and ROI.

Whatever the job, Plenty has a range of products for every occasion. Strong when wet, super-absorbent and re-useable; it’s no wonder Plenty is the UK’s favourite brand of household towel!

Essity has six manufacturing sites in the UK – Manchester, Prudhoe, Skelmersdale, Tawd, Oakenholt, and Stubbins. Each site regulaly contributes to local community initiatives through funding, sponsorship, product donations, and volunteering. In addition, Essity operates a highly-regarded apprentice program helping young people into employment while supporting education and qualifications. In 2017, Essity supported over 20 local community initiatives across our network of manufacturing sites investing over £15,000 through sponsorship and donations. In addition, Essity‘s Prudhoe Mill was nominated for the All-Party Parliamentary Corporate Responsibility Group’s Responsible Business Champion Awards by MP Guy Opperman.

Essity has supported HRH Prince of Wales’ charity In Kind Direct since 2002 through regular donations of product. Since the relationship was established, Essity has donated over £2m worth of product to In Kind Direct that has benefitted over 5,000 voluntary and community organisations. In 2018, Essity donated 178 pallets of essential products worth £278k to In Kind Direct benefitting 1,062 voluntary and community organisations.

In 2018, Essity launched the School Hygiene Essentials Initiative which aims to highlight the impact that poor hygiene standards and behaviour can have on the health, education and well being of primary school children throughout the UK. Essity’s Bottom of the Class report revealed three areas of concern:

• Teachers, parents and children are concerned about falling hygiene standards in primary schools and the impact this has on health

• Teachers believe children are not learning essential hygiene behaviours early enough

• Children are actively avoiding using the toilets at school and are adopting unhealthy behaviours in order to so so.

Essity is committed to developing solutions to improve hygiene standards and education in primary schools by working collaboratively with teachers, parents,local authorities and health experts.

In 2017, Essity’s Bodyform brand became the first feminine hygiene brand to ditch the traditional blue liquid depicting period blood in advertising and replace it with a more realistic red liquid.Bodyform also became the first feminine hygiene brand to make a formal commitment of regular product donations to help address ‘Period Poverty’ in the UK.Essity’s Velvet brand reached the milestone of planting an extra 10 million trees as a finale to its Three Trees Promise initiative. In 2018, Bodyform continued to lead the way in breaking the taboo around menstruation by becoming the first feminine hygiene brand to feature blood in advertising.

In 2019, Essity was invited to be a part of the governments Period Poverty Taskforce to help the UK government tackle period poverty throughout the UK.

In 2019, TENA launched TENA ProSkin range, their most advanced range of absorbent and skincare products.

It has been predicted that the prevalence of chronic wounds will increase at a rate of 12% per annum due to delayed healing (Guest et al, 2017). To help address and improve this issue, in 2018 Essity launched a Best Practice Statement: Improving holistic assessment of chronic wounds.

Antibiotic resistance is a huge problem that needs tackling. This year Essity launched a #Wound_Warriors antimicrobial stewardship campaign with the aim to educate on the effectiveness of appropriate infection prevention and management in wound care as a means to avoid the unnecessary use of antibiotics.

Leukoplast represents over 100 years of clinical experience. During 2017, Leukoplast transferred this wealth of knowledge and experience into first aid and wound care solutions for consumers to self-treat their healthcare needs at home. Leukoplast is now available in selected pharmacies throughout the UK, offering a range of first aid dressings for everyday wound care.

JOBST compression garments are designed to improve quality of life for patients with vascular to chronic oedema related conditions and the latest innovation in the range is a night time garment, JOBST Relax. Launched in 2017, and proven to support better quality of sleep.
