Now, avian influenza is spreadingsporadically in some eastern neighbouringcountries of Myanmar.

Carriers of H5N1 virus are migratory birdsand water common moorhen, and outbreak ofbird flu is high along the routes they migratefrom one region to another. H5N1 virus cansurvive at a place for 35 days at 4 degree Celsius.

It was deduced that the outbreak of bird fluto the northwest of Myanmar from last week ofNovember to the first week of December wasdue to migratory birds.

Therefore, it is required to make sure thatchicken, baby ducks, eggs and poultry productsare not accepted or transported into the nationthrough border areas illegally.

Poultry can be directly infected with thevirus when they have contact with migratorybirds or lakes and pools that are contaminatedwith secretions or excretions from infected birds, and infected chickens or ducks enter a farm.

Moreover, they can be indirectly infectedthrough people who come into contact withinfected poultry farms or materialscontaminated with the virus such as clothes andslippers.

In order to avert such cases, chickens, ducks, geese and waterfowls are to be raised, transported and sold species-wise; and bio-security measures, to be enforced; and marketsshould have their specific off days for sanitationand pasteurization tasks.

In addition, the places migratory birds passthrough and stay are to be demarcated and petanimals are to be prevented from having contactwith farm animals.

The people are to join hands with localorganizations in health care to animals in orderto avoid spread of the virus into the nation.

Prevent cross-borderbird flu

Panama: Canal open to Russian warships

NEW DELHI, 6 Dec —India and Russia signed acivilian nuclear deal Fri-day that would see Russiabuild four nuclear reactorsfor power-starved India.

The deal, inked during ameeting between IndianPrime Minister ManmohanSingh and visiting Presi-dent Dmitry Medvedev ofRussia, was one of tenagreements, including thesale of 80 military helicop-ters and space cooperation.

"The signing of theagreement on civil nuclearcooperation with Russiamarks a new milestone inthe history of our coopera-tion with Russia in the

field of nuclear energy,"said Singh. The deal fol-lows the conclusion of alandmark nuclear deal be-tween the United Statesand India earlier this yearwhich opened the way fornuclear trade between In-dia and other nations.

India has faced a nu-clear trade ban since itsfirst atomic test in 1974amid its refusal to sign in-ternational treaties de-signed to limit the illicitspread of such materials.

The Indo-Russian dealto build four reactors insouthern India had beenagreed on in January, butcould not be ratified until

the international NuclearSupplier Group agreed tolift the atomic ban.

India is eager to expandits nuclear energy sector tohelp fuel its rapidly grow-ing — but energy starved— economy.

The two countries haveclose ties dating back tothe Cold War. Russia hastraditionally been India'slargest arms suppliers andhas built several reactorsfor India in the past.

PANAMA CITY, 6 Dec — Panama saidits canal is open to all, including a Rus-sian waship sailing through the transoce-anic waterway on Friday.

The destroyer Admiral Chabanenko isthe first Soviet or Russian military shipto traverse the 50-mile (80-kilometer)waterway since World War II.

The US government has shown littleconcern about the destroyer’s trip througha canal that was off limits to the SovietUnion during the Cold War.

The destroyer's journey to theWestern Hemisphere, however, reflectsRussia's growing influence and anger

with the US for using warships todeliver aid to Georgia after its Augustwar with Russia.

Panamanian Foreign Minister SamuelLewis portrayed the Russian canal cross-ing as business as usual.

“Here there is no other message thanthat the canal is open to all of the world'sships,” he said.

The warship is part of a fleet that is thefirst Russian navy deployment to theWestern Hemisphere since the Cold War.Before arriving at the canal, it took partin joint exercises with Venezuela's navy.

93 countries sign clusterbomb ban

OSLO, 6 Dec — Ninety-three countries signed a treatybanning cluster bombs Thursday, as diplomats accepted thewishes of victims who begged them to bar the weapons thatkill and maim civilians long after the conflicts end.

Some of the world’s top military powers — including theUS, Russia and China — refused to attend, arguing clusterbombs have legitimate military uses, such as repelling ad-vancing troop columns.

Under the accord, negotiated in May, signatories agreednot to use cluster bombs, to destroy existing stockpiles withineight years, and to fund programs that clear old battlefieldsof dud bombs. The pact left open the door open for new typesof weapons that could pick targets more precisely and con-tain self-destruct technology.

The treaty goes into effect once 30 countries ratify it, aprocess which began, in essence, on Thursday.

However, the negotiations in Dublin, Ireland, earlier thisyear did not involve the biggest makers and users of the weap-ons: the United States, Russia, China, Israel, India andPakistan.Washington has dismissed the prospect that the treatywould alter US policy.—Internet

The hub will be expected to handle about 6,000 flights ayear when completed, most from overseas, the report said.

China has been under rising pressure to further open itsskies as available flight paths grow increasingly crowded.

The country’s military controls about 80 percent of Chi-na’s airspace, and more room is needed for the sharp rise incivilian air traffic, Dorothy Reimold, a US Federal AviationAdministration official, said earlier this year.

Even state media, including the China Daily newspaper, has said restrictions are “stunting” the industry’s growth inChina. The Shanghai Airport Authority has said the privatejet hub will open in the second half of next year.—Internet

Myanmar has several beach resorts local and

foreign tourists can visit for rest and recreation,

such as Ngapali, Maungmagan, Chaungtha and

Ngwehsaung. Among them, Ngwehsaung came to

existence in 2000. With a length of nine miles,

Ngwehsaung is the longest as well as the last of its

kind in Myanmar. It is situated near Bukhwegyi

Village, 30 miles west of Pathein, Ayeyawady

Division. Now, Ngwehsaung Beach Resort de-

signed to help development the nation's tourism

industry has been really put on the map of the

nation and has won the customer satisfaction.

Ngwehsaung Beach Resort has led to an increase in

the number of tourists to Myanmar and has im-

proved tourism industry and hotel industry. In

addition, that has helped improve the living condi-

tions of the people of its surrounding villages.

Thanks to the goal of the government: "The whole

country including rural areas must develop",

Ngwehsaung Beach has developed considerably,

and its surrounding regions are also enjoying cu-

mulative development in parallel. Local people's

major businesses are fishing, agricultural farming,

and running shops. With the development, the

beach has created many job opportunities for local

people. Hotels in the beach provide good services

to the visitors. On the nine-mile-long Ngwehsaung

Beach are 21 hotels stretching five miles. The

beach is kept naturally, thus adding attraction to all

visitors. Due to its serenity, the visitors may see

clearer seawater and more silvery sand,

Ngwehsaung Beach is more attractive than any

other beach in Myanmar. Aureum Palace Resort's

decoration is somewhat different from others: a

mixture of slight western style and Myanmar tradi-

tional style. Bungalows are roofed with thatch and

built of wood. Its decoration is mostly traditional.

The majority of the furniture is made of wood with

the aim of attracting the visitors. All the rooms are

well-furnished with air-conditioner, TV and refrig-

erator. The hotel also has Spa and Bar. Ninety-seven

bungalows are set up in row and separately.

At the entrance to Aureum Palace Resort, visitors

are greeted by a dummy of young woman holding a

Pathein parasol which is the symbol of Pathein. The

living room is supported by huge log pillars. The style

of the resort blends with the beach. It is really pleas-

ant to view Aureum Palace Resort, which is located

among coconut palms, not far from the sea. Visitors

can take a swim in the sea or in the swimming pool in

the compound of the resort. From the swimming pool,

visitors can enjoy the beauty of the sunset and the

beach simultaneously.

Now, Ngwehsaung Beach Resort has been a

household name at the international level. Most of

the tourists to the resort are from Russia, Italy,

Germany and Switzerland, and some are from other

Asian countries. Many tourists frequent Ngwehsaung

Beach owing to the beauty of the beach, hospitality of

Myanmar people, and good services of the hotels.

Gaining a good reputation for their peaceful condi-

tions, wonders and interesting sites, the beaches in

Myanmar receive a good number of foreign tourists

very year.

According to the Myanmar Treasure Resort,

yearly, Ngwehsaung Beach is in season commenc-

ing November, and its peak season falls in Decem-

ber and April. The Myanmar Treasure Resort, a four

star hotel, is made up of 40 deluxe rooms, 24

superior rooms, a souvenir shop and a dinning hall.

And guests have Internet and e-Mail access. It is

furnished with mostly wickerwork and is decorated

with things of traditional style. It also has a space to

take sunbathe and a swimming pool. Myanmar

Treasure Resort has a wonderful view over

Ngwehsaung Beach.

If Ngwehsaung Beach receives a growing number

of visitors, that will help improve tourism industry

and the living standard of local people.

MOGADISHU, 6 Dec —Seven suspected pirateswere in the custody ofYemeni authorities earlyFriday, after they werepicked up in the pirate-plagued Gulf of Aden.

The Royal DanishNavy said one of its war-ships, the HDMSAbsalon, rescued theseven men on Wednesdayafter they were found in apowerless skiff withrocket-propelled grenadesand AK-47s aboard, navyspokesman Jesper Lyngetold .

They were found ap-proximately 75 nauticalmiles (140 kilometers) offthe coast of Yemen after adistress call, Lynge said.

However, a Yemeni In-terior Ministry official of-fered a different accountof events, saying its coast

guard rescued the sus-pected pirates on Friday. The official said a coastguard patrol had detecteda boat near a port nearBalhaf, Yemen, and, be-lieving its activity to besuspicious, chased itdown.

The coast guard ex-changed fire with the menon board the boat, the of-ficial said, and the Somali

boat overturned.The men are suspected

to be pirates because ofthe weapons on board,Lynge said. Pirates fre-quently use small boats toattack commercial vesselswith small arms and gre-nades, but he said theAbsalon crew could notconnect the men “directlywith another pirate attackin the area.”—Internet

Warning over Internet painkillers

Parents warned on fakeconsoles

LONDON, 6 Dec — Parents are being warned aboutfake imported Nintendo games consoles which couldbe a fire hazard and pose a danger to their children’ssafety.

HM Revenue & Customs said it had seized hun-dreds of counterfeit Nintendo DS and DS Lites, whichwere discovered to contain dangerous power adapt-ers. Nintendo confirmed it had not produced the po-tentially dangerous adaptors.

Several UK consumers had ordered the consolesafter being attracted by the much cheaper price.

Many had been bought for £40 instead of the usual£100 retail price.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) warned UK cus-tomers to be “vigilant” when purchasing electronicgoods from websites.

“Buy from a reputable or regulated site, and if pur-chasing from outside the UK or a new website researchthe site, check all the facts before you buy,” saidPamela Rogers, HMRC’s head of intellectual prop-erty rights.

HMRC spokesperson Clare Merrills warned thatfaulty counterfeit consoles could be unsafe.

“You might find you plug it in and the adaptor setson fire or the wires start to melt and stick out,” shewarned. —Internet

LONDON, 6 Dec — UKexperts have warned ofthe dangers of purchasingdrugs online after a studyshowed wide availabilityof strong painkillers overthe internet.

A team at EdinburghUniversity found 35websites selling prescrip-tion-only pain drugs toUK customers without re-quiring a prescription.

Government regulatorswarned that buying medi-cines online could have“deadly” consequences.

The results appear inthe British Journal of

Clinical Pharmacology.Almost half of those

sold prescription-onlypainkillers but 76% didnot require the customerto provide a valid pre-scription.

Six asked for a pre-scription but accepted afax or email copy whichthe researchers said couldbe forged or modified.

The drugs available in-cluded opioids such astramadol and non-steroidal antiinflam-matories, such asnaproxen and celecoxib, commonly prescribed for

conditions such as arthri-tis.

They can have severeside-effects and someshould not be taken inconjunction with othermedicines or in peoplewith certain conditions, the researchers said.

A spokeswoman for theMedicines and HealthcareProducts RegulatoryAgency, said although thesale of prescription onlymedicines without aproper patient consulta-tion was illegal it was notillegal to buy medicinesonline. — Internet

SAN FRANCISCO , 6 Dec— Facebook’s millions ofusers are in the crosshairsof a computer virusdubbed Koobface that isbeing spread through thesocial networking site’smessaging system.

Users whose comput-ers are infected may havetheir credit card numbersstolen or their searches onGoogle, Yahoo and MSNdiverted to fraudulentWeb sites.

The malicious codeunderscores how hackersare increasingly targetingsocial networking sitesincluding Facebook andMySpace to capitalize ontheir big audiences. Be-cause social networkingsites allow messages onlybetween fellow memberswho are confirmedfriends, many users as-sume they are safe.

Koobface is spreadthrough messages sent

from friends whose com-puters are infected withthe virus. The messagesarrive in Facebookinboxes with titles like“you look just awesomein this new movie” anddirect readers to anotherWeb site to supposedlywatch the clip.

After clicking to visitthe site, users are showna message that tells themthey need an updatedAdobe Systems Flashplayer. But downloadingthe software infects thevictim’s computer withthe virus.

“Only a very small per-centage of Facebook us-ers have been affected, and we’re workingquickly to update our se-curity systems to mini-mize any further impact,”said Barry Schnitt, aspokesman for Facebook,in Palo Alto.

WASHINGTON, 6 Dec —The blockbuster asthmadrug Advair does not ap-pear to have an increasedrisk of serious respiratorycomplications seen withsimilar new medicines, federal health officials saidon Friday.

But a less widely usedmedication, Serevent, hada significantly higher rateof complications whencompared to older treat-ments, the Food and DrugAdministration said. Bothdrugs are made by thesame company, Glaxo-SmithKline. FDA safetyreviewers are recommend-ing that Serevent no longerbe approved for treatingasthma. The FDA is con-cerned about asthma drugsknown as LABAs, whichalready carry warnings.

The long-acting medica-tions relax tight musclesaround stressed airwaysand free patients from theneed to take a puff fromtheir inhaler every fewhours. For many asthmasufferers, that means theycan sleep through thenight. But LABAs, for rea-sons that are still being de-bated, can increase risks ofdeath and respiratory com-plications in some patients. The risk may be lowerwhen a LABA is used to-gether with a steroid totreat underlying inflamma-tion deep inside the air-ways. Current medicalguidelines suggest usingboth kinds of drugs to-gether for patients withchronic asthma who arenotresponding well to othertreatments.—Internet

LONDON, 6Dec — Ahome encoun-ter with a mid-table minnowshould beenough tohave one of theEnglish Pre-mier League’sgiants smack-

ing its lips in anticipation. But, if this season has taught us anything, it is that

Arsenal are not a typical member of the top flight elite.Arsene Wenger’s side apparently likes nothing better

than to confront one of their Big Four peers, havingalready toppled Manchester United and Chelsea thisterm. It is the games against the lesser lights which havebeen their undoing, so Wigan Athletic’s trip to theEmirates stadium will provoke familiar flutterings ofdread in the stomachs of the club’s followers on Satur-day. It is remarkable in itself that Arsenal remain incontention in the title race.

Wenger’s side have already suffered five defeatsthis season but they are still in touch thanks to thestumbles of their elite rivals, with Chelsea (12 pointsdropped at home), Liverpool (held at Anfield byFulham, West Ham and Stoke) and Manchester United(three wins out of eight on their travels) all equallyinconsistent.—Internet

SINGAPORE, 6 Dec—Singapore’s Prime MinisterLee Hsien Loong said onFriday that the country’seconomy, which is alreadyin recession, may face yearsof slow growth. “I thinkthat the recession - to thebest of the experts’judgment - may last a year.Maybe if we are lucky, threequarters,” Lee toldmembers of Singapore'sForeign CorrespondentsAssociation at a lunch.

“But the recovery fromthe recession is likely to beweaker than from previous

recessions and we mustbe prepared for severalyears of slow growth,” headded.

The city-state’s grossdomestic product (GDP)contracted 6.8 per cent in

the third quarter from theprevious quarter, followingthe 5.3 per cent decline inthe second quarter. Thatmeans Singapore economyturned into technicalrecession.—Xinhua

WASHINGTON, 6 Dec— Traumatic brain injurymay lead to an increasedrisk of developing symp-toms like those of Alzhe-imer’s disease, Parkin-son’s disease and otherdisorders, a panel of ex-perts said on Thursday.

A committee of theInstitute of Medicine, which provides advice toUS policymakers, re-viewed studies on theconsequences of the kind

of brain injuries that thou-sands of US troops in Iraqand Afghanistan have suf-fered.

The panel’s reportsaid more than 5,500troops have sustained trau-matic brain injuries in thetwo wars, many due to theroadside bombs com-monly used by insurgentsagainst American militaryvehicles.

Led by George Ru-therford of the Universityof California, San Fran-cisco, the panel said thereis evidence that such inju-ries at moderate and se-vere levels may leave aperson at higher risk fordementia like that experi-enced by people withmind-robbing Alzheim-er’s disease.
