Mandate (1) To educate students in the professions of:

Ø Audiology Ø Speech-Language Pathology

(2) To prepare them to enter professional practice

Master of Clinical Science (MClSc) Entry requirements:

Ø Four-year undergraduate degree in any discipline Ø Minimum of 14 hours experience in professions

New MClSc/PhD Combined Degrees Ø Offered jointly by CSD and the Graduate Program in Health and

Rehabilitation Sciences (HRS) (Hearing Science Field or Speech and Language Science Field)

Ø  First of its kind in Canada Ø Designed to provide academically exceptional students who

possess some prior experience in research with the opportunity to complete the academic requirements: Ø  to practice as an audiologist or a speech-language pathologist in Canada Ø  to conduct independent research

Ø Completed within five years Ø Both degrees conferred only when all requirements for both

degrees are fulfilled.

Audiologists are Concerned with … Ø  The evaluation of normal and impaired hearing abilities

Ø  The assessment of communicative function in persons with hearing impairments

Ø  The prevention of hearing loss, including consulting with industry and government suggesting ways to minimize the impact of noise on hearing

Ø  The planning and carrying out of rehabilitation programs for individuals with hearing problems: Ø Prescription and fitting of assistive listening devices Ø Training in speech (lip) reading or other communication

strategies Ø Counseling the individual and family on how to cope with

hearing loss

Audiologists are Involved with …

Ø  Infant Hearing Program - early identification and remediation of newborn children with hearing loss

Ø   Audiological services for pre-school and school-aged children

   Ø  Hearing assessments of and treatments for adults  

National Centre for Audiology (NCA) Special Feature of School  

Ø  The  Na$onal  Centre  for  Audiology  (NCA)  is  the  major  research  centre  for  audiology  in  Canada.  

Ø  The  NCA  is  a  well  equipped  and  modern  research  facility  located  in  Elborn  College  that  provides  unique  learning  and  research  opportuni?es  for  students.

The assessment and treatment of a broad range of speech, language, hearing, voice, resonance, swallowing and cognitive-communication impairments, such as:

Speech-Language Pathologists

Ø Develop and carry out treatment programs designed to facilitate, to restore or to improve speech, language, hearing, voice, resonance, swallowing and cognitive-communication

Ø Provide counseling and guidance for individuals with communication disorders, their families and caregivers

Ø  Act as consultants for other professions including education, medicine, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology, social work, among others

Ø On normal and impaired processes of speech, language, hearing, voice, resonance, swallowing, and cognitive-communication.

Ø On the efficacy, effectiveness, and efficiency of treatments to determine best practices.

The H.A. Leeper Speech and Hearing Clinic Special Feature of School

Mandate:

Ø  To provide clinical education experiences for students enrolled in audiology and speech-language pathology

Ø  To support research in the area of communication disorders

Ø  To provide high quality speech, language, hearing, voice, resonance and cognitive-communication services to individuals with a wide range of communication problems and to their families

Audiology Prerequisites

1.  ½ course Developmental Psychology or Normal Lifespan Development

2.  ½ course Statistics 3.  At least one ½ course in Human Anatomy, Human Physiology,

Physiological Psychology or Neuroscience 4.  At least one ½ course in CSD-related Social Science,

Psychology, Linguistics * Applicants are strongly encouraged to have completed at least one course in mathematics, physics, or engineering science.
