PRESIDENTS REPORT

Welcome to the November edition of the Buzzer box your monthly magazine. I think

you will all agree that this magazine is an important part of our club, for those country

members I hope that you feel you are in touch with the goings on in and around the

club. Please consider your contribution to this magazine. We still need cover stories; la-

dies get involved tell us your story about being married to a Model T nut. Have you told

your story for the member’s corner I urge you all to put pen to paper and write your sto-

ry.

Looking backwards I thank Rod and Cheryl for their hospitality representing our club by

hosting Residents from Regis Aged Care Kingswood into their home for lunch, I believe

they all had an amazing day and are still talking about it.

We will be hosting them again on Friday 15th November at our clubrooms. Members are

asked if they are available could they please bring your cars to the clubrooms and join

with the residents from Regis Kingswood for a BBQ lunch. These opportunities bring so

much joy to these men and ladies, it is a pleasure to witness the excitement they ex-

press upon seeing the old cars on display. Please for catering purposes let Maxine know

if you will be attending.

Christmas is almost here our breakup party will be held on the 30th November entertain-

ment will be “little Tony” supper will be provided, and we ask that you BYO drinks. This

promises to be a wonderful evening a little different from past years, but I am sure it will

be a fitting end to our year. I encourage you all to come along and enjoy an evening of

friendship. Again, for catering purposes please let Maxine know that you will be attend-

ing.

The final event for the year will be the December General meeting, supper will be pro-

vided at the conclusion of the meeting. Please bring a tin to put under the Christmas

tree.

See you all at the November General meeting

Lizzie Ladies

Eight Words Women Use

Fine This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you

need to shut up.

Five Minutes If she is getting dressed, this means at least half an hour. Five minutes

only means five minutes if you have been given time to watch the footy before

helping around the house.

Nothing This is the calm before the storm. This means something and you should be on

your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine.

Go Ahead This is a dare., not permission. Don’t do it.

Loud Sigh This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by

men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is

wasting her time standing here arguing with you about nothing. (Refer to #3 for

meaning of nothing)

That’s Okay. This is one of the most dangerous statements a woman can make to a man.

That’s okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and

when you will pay for your mistake.

Thanks. A woman is thanking you. Do not question or faint. Just say you’re welcome (I

add a clause here) This is true, unless she says “Thanks a lot” – That is pure sar

casm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say “You’re Welcome” That will

bring on a “Whatever”

Don’t worry about it. I got it.

Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told

a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a

man asking “What’s wrong? For the woman’s response refer to #3

From an old married man with years of experience.

Pop into Maryborough 2019

The reason for the “Pop” into Maryborough was because it was to pay tribute to the author of Mary Poppins, Pamela Lyndon Travers who was born in Maryborough in 1899. The SA contingent who attended the rally were John and Jill Fox, Neil Hofmeyer, David and Sue Dunn, Alan Bennett, Ian and Sue Oates, David and Gayl Carver with their friends Chris and Rosemary from NZ and Peter and Merawyn Perry. We headed off from Adelaide on the 24th September along with David and Sue Dunn and Neil Hofmeyer. We then met Ian and Sue Oates on the way. This was our little convoy for our road trip to Maryborough. We stayed at Tooleybuck, Parkes, Narrabri and Toowoomba in motels that would fit our cars and trailers and all were excellent. We then arrived into Maryborough staying at the Blue Shades Motel where we had open garages below our rooms to keep them out of the weather. After organising trailer parking at the nearby caravan park and un-packing, we caught up with the rest of the SA group with a meal at the pub across the road. Bernice and Adrian Probert joined us also, staying in Maryborough with their car-avan for a few days and even came on a days run before heading back home with their caravan. Registration Day arrived and we headed off to the Brolga Centre to receive our Rally Guide book, information and goodies. The committee had organised for sales of vintage clothing and a myriad of accessories, the purchasing of raffle tickets, rally gear as well as tea/coffee and biscuits. Here was our first chance to catch up with friends from previous rallies. That night we returned for a welcome dinner of finger food and an overview of the what was going to happen for the week ahead. Our daily rallies were a rolling start from the Brolga Centre each day where we received a ‘Daily Rattler’ newsletter and goodies on some days.

Day 1 was a gentle 150km drive from Maryborough to Tiara for morning tea. Ralph and Lesley Challenger were there to greet us with their “Tucker Truck” with a range of cakes and slices from a Maryborough bakery. They were to serve us morning tea everyday and we looked for-ward to what was on offer! Leaving Tiara we headed for an old rail interchange township of Theebine for lunch at the historic 1909 Theebine pub. Here we had a bbq and also had entertainment whilst we ate. From there we headed back to Maryborough. A great day to begin the rally. Day 2 was the longest driving day of 190kms but was well worth it! We drove to the Red Gold Macadamia Farm where we parked our cars amongst the mac-adamia trees. We had morning tea and then had demonstrations of how maca-

damias are grown and pro-cessed. We could purchase some macadamias as well as some fruit from Don and Jenny Wagner’s fruit and veg van. Such a treat to visit. Then we drove to Tin Can Bay to a park for lunch provided by Subway. Whilst waiting for lunch we hud-dled in the shelters while it rained quite heavily for around 10minutes, but that and one oth-er shower on one day was all the rain we had all week. Then back to Maryborough.

Day 3 we headed to Burrum Heads for you guessed it-morning tea from the Tucker Truck! The location by the water was picturesque. Then it was off to Hervey Bay where we drove along the Esplande and we could have free time for the rest of the day exploring the area. We decided on a meal at the Boat Club at the harbour. The journey was 158kms, some of it on busy roads. That night we returned to the Brolga Centre for pizza and then watched the movie “Saving Mr Banks” which was excellent and fitted the theme for the ral-ly.

Page 10: Established February 1964 BUZZER BOXmodeltfordclubaustralia.org.au/wp-content/uploads/bb/2019_11_Buz… · Maryborough’s son, who was the first man to step ashore at the Gallipoli

10

Day 4 was the Display Day at the Portside Heritage Precinct where participants could show off their vintage clothing as well as their cars to the public. Here we could ex-plore the area, taking a stroll in Queens Park or obtaining a Portside Passport to look at the Customs House, Bond Store and the Mil-itary and Colonial Museum. There was also a statue of Duncan Chapman, dedicated to Maryborough’s son, who was the first man to step ashore at the Gallipoli landing on April 25th. My favourite building was the Story Bank building which housed the Mary Poppins Mu-seum as there were so many interactive dis-plays, video footage and a unique task of finding mice in various rooms. The day included markets and Costume judging in which Ian and Sue Oates took out best dressed couple and their prize was a replica Henry Ford toolbox and a Mary Pop-pins umbrella! We also had a ride on a steam train called the Mary Ann.

Lunch was provided by the Fraser Coast Council in the Band Hall. That night we drove in a Headlight/Gaslight tour of the CBD which was fun! Day 5 was our last day of tour-ing and we headed off to Brooweena, which was a base for some of the earliest settle-ments north of Brisbane and was a step back in time. On the way to morning tea we drove through a cane field which was fun. We then parked for morning tea at a cane farm where we heard all about how cane is grown and processed. We then drove on to Brooweena where lunch was provided by the historic group of the region and we checked out the museum and sur-rounding buildings at leisure.

11

This evening was our Final Dinner and we enjoyed a lovely three course meal whilst awards were given out and raffles were drawn. The NSW Model T Club then announced that the next rally was to be held at Dubbo in 2022 and we could collect entries. Day 6 was our Farewell break-fast at the Brolga Centre and we said our farewells to partici-pants from other states saying Hoo-roo till next time! We would like to congratulate the Model T Ford Club of Queensland for an excellent, well organised and relaxed rally which we enjoyed immensely. They are to be commended at their efforts for their first ever National Rally after testing how they would go with the rally in Warwick several years ago. Well done! Peter and Merry Perry

KINGSLEY’S FUN RUN

Sunday morning started off down at the Toll Gate, with a few Morgan’s (I think) Driving

past before Kingsley took off leading the way in his Model A Coupe followed by Peter

and Merawyn Perry in their 1914 Model T.

Up onto Eagle on the Hill we went, to then head through Stirling, Aldgate, Mylor,

Echunga and Flaxley enjoying the view of the still green hills.

Upon arriving at Macclesfield we stopped at DavenPort Square to enjoy Jenny’s Famous

morning tea and a shared lunch,

After lunch Alan Bennett gave a demonstration on how to change a T Ford wheel. This

left Tony Russell Speechless as he had been doing this the hardest way possible for the

last 30 + years.

With multiple other car and bike runs passing by we loaded back into our cars and

headed onto Strathalbyn to Visit Ben Finnis Classic Cars. We all arrived and filled up his

front car park, everyone headed in to have a look around. With almost every car

starting a discussion or a memory between everyone.

Coming to the end of the day everyone stood behind the “Yellow Peril” for a group

photo.

The afternoon ended with everyone either heading home or heading into the center to

look at the market and all the Antique stores.

A good day was had by all and we thank Kingsley and Jenny for organizing the day.

Anthony Russell

9. BUZZER BOX REPORT: The Editor, Maxine Martin, asked members to submit cover stories to her. She encour-aged members to ask ladies to submit stories for the lizzy ladies page about their expe-riences of those married to a Model T fanatic.

10. FEDERATION REPORT: Michael Gordon spoke to the meeting about the format of the Bay to Birdwood event next year. As it is the 40th year that the event will be held the format will be changed to include both Vintage & Veteran and Classic cars. He raised the concern that the num-ber of vintage and veteran cars will be limited to 800. A long discussion ensued with most of the members wanting to ensure that the event will revert to separate categories with each of the groups used in rotation over two years. It was moved by Mik Bojko and seconded by Kinsley Taylor that a letter be sent to the organizers to ask that the format of the event continue to be held with Veteran & Vintage cars one year and Classic Cars the other. Michael will send a summary of the views expressed at the meeting to Max-ine Martin, Secretary, to assist her in writing the letter to the Bay to Birdwood commit-tee. Michael also spoke of the 2020 All British Day event, which will be held on the 9th Feb-ruary. Entries will be limited to 850 on the two ovals, where cars will be displayed in Club Groups. Excess entries will be displayed in areas near the oval. A number of club members attend this event each year. Entries for the event will close early this year; 7th November 2019.

Page 17: Established February 1964 BUZZER BOXmodeltfordclubaustralia.org.au/wp-content/uploads/bb/2019_11_Buz… · Maryborough’s son, who was the first man to step ashore at the Gallipoli

17

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING cont.

11. PAST EVENTS: No official club events were held as our members were involved in many other events.

12. FUTURE EVENTS: -Sunday 20th October Kingsley’s Fun Run – shared lunch Kingsley Taylor drew the attention of members to the advert in the Buzzer Box. There will be only one stop for morning tea, which will be followed by a chat and shared lunch at the same place. Lunch needs to be concluded in time for a 1.00pm arrival at Ben Finniss’s Classic Car and Bike Collection as this closes by 2.00pm. Following this, there will the opportunity for members to visit the Museum or numerous antique shops. Mem-bers were asked to contact Kingsley & Jenny to let them know what they will be bringing to share for lunch. -Sunday 17th November Barossa Adventure Jim Trenorden explained to members that the details for the run to Stienfeld Flugplatz are in the Buzzer Box. If the weather is amenable on the day we will see a display of ul-tra lite flying and a running of a stationary seven-cylinder aircraft engine. With the vines out in their spring glory this should prove a wonderful day for giving the Ts an airing. -Saturday 30th November Christmas supper in the club More information about this event will be available in the next Buzzer Box. $10.00 per head

13. GENERAL BUSINESS: Regis Aged Care Homes residents visited Rod and Cheryl Crawford’s home for lunch yesterday, 01/10/2019. This was an event under the club’s banner. The guests were ap-preciative of the delicious lunch and had an amazing time. They were particularly im-pressed with the Yellow Peril (1915 Model T Racer). Thanks to Rod and Cheryl for rep-resenting the club and opening their home and cars. These types of events are a good advertisement for the club profile in the community. The next planned event will be a BBQ for Regis Residents in our clubrooms, Friday 15th November, approximately 11.00am. We are asking members to bring their Model Ts for the visitors to look at. We will also need helpers to set up, cook the BBQ, serve the guests and clean up. Members were asked to contact Maxine Martin if they are able to assist. Further to the discussion about the changes to the Bay to Birdwood event, members agreed with Tony Russell that driving an older slower car in these events when quicker more modern vehicles are behind looking for an opportunity to overtake becomes stress-ful and detracts from the enjoyment of the day. John Clark reminded members that the Open Day at the Military Motor Museum in Edin-burgh was next Sunday and assured that it would prove a great day. Morris Register club will be organizing a Historic Run. Mik Bojko will follow up with the details. Neil Murrie gave us some more information about his La Salle car. This time Neil was looking for replacement water pump that he was sure he had somewhere. In frustration, after a lengthy fruitless search he decided to have the old one welded and repaired. Having completed that he found another brand new pump that must have been there for 25 years, neglected in a far corner of the shed. We could commiserate with him about the joys of working on old cars.

14. RAFFLE DRAW: Three prizes were won.

15. BUY, SWAP, SELL OR GIVEAWAY: Advertisements for a Durrant and Nash cars will go in the Buzzer Box. Rod Hill has Rug-by parts available.

16. NEXT MEETING: Wednesday 6th November 2019, 8.00pm

17. MEETING CLOSED - the President invited all those present to stay for a coffee and chat

Page 18: Established February 1964 BUZZER BOXmodeltfordclubaustralia.org.au/wp-content/uploads/bb/2019_11_Buz… · Maryborough’s son, who was the first man to step ashore at the Gallipoli

General Business-The Federation met with DPTI staff last week and the Government attendance

was significant compared to Federation & Hot Rod personnel. Discussions were mainly with Hot Rod

people as we have had our code in place for some time & follow standard historic procedures com-

pared to the technical details & specifications of Hot Rods.

Revision of the code is set for 2022

Statistics of vehicles on CLUB REGISTRATION are as follows; 738 Street Rods; 1365 LHD and

Historic Vehicles a few years ago 10,000; last year 27,000 and this year is now 56,000.

Street Rods are pre 1949 chassis or a facsimile of that era of vehicle.

Left Hand Drive Exemption Form must always be kept in your LHD vehicle. If your exemption

is in the original person’s name that first obtained the permit for driving on South Australian roads,

then you can apply to have it changed to your name. The exemption form will still be in the same

format but have your name on the top.

Page 19: Established February 1964 BUZZER BOXmodeltfordclubaustralia.org.au/wp-content/uploads/bb/2019_11_Buz… · Maryborough’s son, who was the first man to step ashore at the Gallipoli

19

FEDERATION MEETING cont.

The Tailem Bend Club had a few issues with procedures & clarification of the code so they invited the

Federation to attend one of their meetings to discuss these problems. The Federation has addressed

tonight’s meeting with the option of inviting the Federation to a Club Meeting to discuss issues or clari-

fy any item.

A Club Representative brought up the issue of electrified vehicles on historic registration. The Interna-

tional Federation of Historic Vehicles recently put forward a review of this type of vehicle. Saying if it is

electrified then it is not historic. While it is electrified then it does not qualify as an historic vehicle. If

the motor and gearbox had been stored and is put back into the vehicle then it would be a historic ve-

hicle.

I asked the chair if they had heard any details of the Bay to Birdwood future runs. The President said

we are no longer involved in the Bay to Birdwood organising Committee. I mentioned about the ceiling

of 500 cars of pre 1950’s Historic cars & 500 Classics + 100 Modern. I asked if they realised that you

could miss out on the parade if you were not selected. Some members commented that last year it

was a struggle to get 1000 vehicles. I don’t think they realised that those people that had gone every

year since its inception could miss out on selection in future. I put this to the meeting and asked that

individuals & clubs email or make known their problem with this new idea so that the B2B Committee

would take it on notice. Quite a few of the Representatives made comment that they would contact

the B2B Committee. I also mentioned that I had heard this was not just for the 40th anniversary but

would continue for all runs. Michael Gordon

Attention members owning Left Hand Drive vehicles on

Club Registration Scheme

Recently one of our members had been issued a Log Book for their Club vehicle. However the club had

no record of it being LHD so no request for a DPTI Exemption form was asked for. Consequently a Log

Book was issued incorrectly. Over the years when inspections were mandatory, the steering being on

the left side had not been noted. The club has a copy of these vehicle inspection forms but there is no

record kept if the vehicle is right or left hand drive. The DPTI Exemption forms are photocopied by the

Registrars of the club when produced by the owner for club record files to justify the issuing of a Log

Book.

Hence a vehicle being driven on the road without this Exemption is UNREGISTERED. The code of prac-

tice (which all those on Club Registration would have read) stipulates the Exemption form for LHD vehi-

cle is to be kept permanently in the vehicle and must be produced if stopped by an official and request-

ed. LHD Exemption Form is a document that is part of the vehicles right to be driven on South Australi-

an roads and remains in the vehicle even on transfer of ownership.

The forms are issued by the Department of Planning Transport and Infrastructure from the Regency

Park Office. If you have misplaced your certificate then the DPTI office might be able to locate your

original in their files BUT this is not always possible due to their old filing systems.

If you need an Exemption issued then you must apply at the Motor Registration Division at Regency

Park and make an appointment for an inspection at a cost. This inspection will involve a complete

check of all your braking capacity, indicators, tyres etc. over their “pits”. You will have to place it on a

trailer (for inspection) to get it there as it cannot be driven on the road without a permit, regardless of

you having an incorrectly completed Log Book.
