My friends, Due to the Coronavirus I had to cancel my vacation and I am sure that many of you had to do the same. But I am not complaining. With adjusting to our new situation, I thought about how important vacations are not only for those who are working but for seniors and students also. Each one of you should take an annual vacation. Being alone or with family members at home can be stressful. Going to work or school every day can be stressful too. We know that stress can cause heart, stomach and brain disease. Jesus was and is concerned about our mental and physical well-being, when he said in the Gospel of Matthew 11:28, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give rest”. There are many benefits of an annual vacation. But this year travelling would not be possible, so make some other pleasurable way to enjoy an annual vacation time. Be creative. How about the idea of attending daily Masses at St. Faustina Church or visiting a beautiful Grotto of the blessed Virgin Mary in the courtyard and meditating on the life of the Mother of Jesus. This week we will observe the First Friday of the month with Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Many Catholics in the world are observing the Nine First Fridays’ Devotion to obtain the excessive mercy from Jesus’ Heart, His love and grace of final repentance before death. This is how you have to complete the First Fridays’ Devotions:

1) Receive Holy Communion on each First Friday 2) The nine Fridays must be consecutive 3) They must be made in honor and in reparation to Jesus’ Sacred Heart

In our parish we have Marian Devotions on the First Saturday of the month to our Lady of Fatima to obtain all the graces necessary for Heaven. It is the Five First Saturdays’ Devotion that includes: Confession, rosary, meditation before the Blessed Sacrament and the Holy Mass. Many people from outside of our parish like this devotion. These two devotions are great for vacation time and for the enhancement of spiritual life. The observance of Independence Day is also a good time for vacation and appreciation of our country, that has its own beautiful history. There is a new tendency to reframe the history of America. Traditionally the history of America began in 1776 where 13 colonies claimed their independence from England and this event led to the formation of the United States. The second trend is the “1619 Project”, according to which America came to existence in August 1619 when 20 slaves were brought from Africa and they and their ancestors built the history of our country. I believe that it is God who is the author of all creation and of all history. On this day let us enjoy freedom, prosperity and pray for unity.

God Bless,

St. Vincent de Paul

PANTRY UPDATE

We hope and pray that all parishioners are staying safe and healthy during this pandemic. While our office has been closed during this pandemic, St. Vincent de Paul has been delivering food along with gas cards to families in need. As we look forward to starting up shortly, we need the following: canned tuna, canned chicken, canned soups, peanut butter- 16 oz. ( please no large ones), jam, rice sides, toothpaste, laundry detergent, hand soap, deodorant, and toilet tissue. When we are able to reopen our office, food distribution will be by appointment only. Also, the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift stores are now open. Thank you for your continued support and pray for peace in our country.

Gospel Reflection on the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

(Adapted from Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families by Karen O’Malley)

Hearing the Word (Matthew 10:37-42): Jesus said to his apostles: “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is righteous will receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because he is a disciple - amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.” Reflecting on the Word: Jesus is very clear. We must love God more than we love our families, more than we love our own lives. This means putting God before all else: family obligations, work, leisure. It means focusing on God at all times instead of confining our love for God to convenient moments. When we love God best, our capacity for love expands. We love everyone better; we lavish our family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors with God’s love - a limitless, patient, unconditional love. What does love mean to you? What does it mean for you to love God more than your family or yourself? How do you show that love? How has God taught you how to love others? God sees all of us differently than we see ourselves. What does it mean to you to have “God’s eyes” when we look at others? How does seeing with God’s eyes change your view of other people? How does seeing with God’s eyes change your view of yourself? Is there something that you need to change in your own life?

I would like to share some encouragement and prayers written by Steve Givens who wrote a devotional called In the Light of Hope that was inspired by the words of Pope Francis. It spoke to me while experiencing the pandemic that has changed our world. Like the ancient Israelites wandering in the desert, we are a people lost in darkness and searching for a new life. We try to get by on our own devices, but we cannot, no matter how hard we try. So we admit that we need our all-loving God. We recognize the saving grace bestowed upon us by the sacrifice of Jesus, our Savior. Our journey as Christians is a journey of transformation. And the only way to get where we want to go is to know where we begin. We begin in darkness. But there is a light straight ahead. The Light of the World provides us with the “Light of Hope,” and there is a hand to hold that will lead us into it. God of peace, when I watch the news, it’s easy to begin to lose hope. It seems too much to bear, the problems too big to fix. Help me to see your way. Give me the strength and the courage to reach out and do what I can, to offer love and compassion to those I can reach. Amen. God of my hopeful prayers, I often struggle to find you in the commotion of our world. Even in my moments of quiet prayer and worship, I struggle to hear your voice or understand your will. But here’s what I have learned over the years: You are always present when I call out to you, always trying to find me. Instill hope in me, I pray. Allow me to know that you are always there, waiting for me to turn toward you. Amen. God of my vision, I see with eyes of faith because I know no other way. There is nothing else that gives me hope beyond my daily life and struggles. With eyes of faith, I see beyond a tough day and into the possibility of the next. With eyes of faith, I can look beyond everything that’s happening in my life and into the faithful hearts of those who persevere and those who work for change in the world. I choose how I see the world. I choose whether or not I live in hope. And so I choose hope and faith. I choose you, Lord. Amen. God Bless, Sandy Acord Growing Faith ...Engaging Hearts

COVID-19: A Prayer of Solidarity

For all who have contracted the Coronavirus; we pray for care and healing.

For those who are particularly vulnerable; we pray for safety and protection.

For all who experience fear or anxiety; we pray for peace of mind and spirit.

For affected families who are facing difficult decisions between food on the table or public safety; we pray for policies that recognize their plight.

For those who do not have adequate health insurance; we pray that no family will face financial burdens alone.

For those who are afraid to access care due to immigration status; we pray for recognition of the God-given dignity of all.

For our brothers and sisters around the world; we pray for shared solidarity.

For public officials and decision makers; we pray for wisdom and guidance.

Father, during this time may your Church be a sign of hope, comfort and love to all. Grant peace. Grant comfort. Grant healing. Be with us, Lord. Amen.

Act of Spiritual Communion

It has long been a Catholic understanding that when circumstances prevent one from receiving Holy Communion, it is possible to make an Act of Spiritual Communion which is a source of grace. Spiritual Communion means uniting one’s self in prayer with Christ’s sacrifice and worshipping Him in His Body and Blood. The most common reason for making an Act of Spiritual Communion is when a person cannot attend Mass. Acts of Spiritual Communion increase our desire to receive sacramental Communion and help us avoid the sins that would make us unable to receive Holy Communion worthily.

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You in my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen

Updating Parish Records

We have found, during this time of the pandemic, that our parish records need to be updated. Even though many of you may have belonged to St. Edmund or St. Sylvester for many years prior to the opening of St. Faustina your record may be missing vital information. Many calls were made during this time to update you with information. If you did not receive a phone call from a team of our parishioners or a robo call from Fr. Bogdan, then we do not have a current phone number for you. Many of you now only have cell phones and no longer have a home phone. Please take a few minutes and fill out the form below. We are also asking for an email address. We have no plans at this time to use it, however, we never know what tomorrow will bring. Our robo calls are sent out using the parish phone number. Hopefully, we will never encounter a situation like we have for the past several months again. Thank you for your time. Name:_______________________________ Address:______________________________ City: ________________________________ Zip Code: _____________________________ Phone: _______________________________ Email:________________________________ Please write legibly. This form can be mailed, dropped in the collection or returned to the office when we reopen or if you would like send us an email at [email protected]
