Statistics don’t lie.

Social media’s popularity:

• It took radio 38 years to reach 50 million listeners. Terrestrial TV took 13 years to reach 50 million users. The internet took four years to reach 50 million people. In less than nine months, Facebook added 100 million users.

• Twitter’s website attracted 44.5 million unique visitors worldwide in June 2009, according to comScore.

• 80% of companies use (or are planning to use), LinkedIn as their primary recruiting tool during this year. The site has just celebrated its 50 millionth membership.

• 64% of marketers use social media for 5 hours or more each week during campaigns; 39% use it for 10 or more hours per week.

What does all this mean for business?

Questions to help determine if now is the right time to implement a social media plan:

• What do you want to achieve? • Who are you targeting? • How does your target audience use social media? • How should you come across? • Are you ready for a long engagement? • Does social media fit your organization’s culture?

Don’t rush into it without proper planning or you’ll most likely waste a lot of time and money!

Page 9: Establishing a Social Media Presence for Your Company

Companies are communicating differently with their customers, clients, and prospects. This shift is due to several factors:

• The internet’s wide reach among the growing number of networking sites

• Word of mouth is more important than ever, especially with shrinking marketing budgets

• The viral nature of great content and the understanding of distribution streams to share the content

• Consumers are making purchasing decisions from their trusted networks rather than from advertising

• Listening tools enable easier monitoring of our brands

A social media scenario:

Joe Shopper walks into your business, has a poor experience and documents this injustice on his flip video. He quickly uploads to YouTube and shares with his extensive network. Members of his network forward the message to their networks , hitting all the major networking sites in the process. Before you know it, thousands of people are talking poorly about your brand, product, or service.

Luckily your company has implemented a social media strategy and is proficient at using listening tools.

You are quick to respond by apologizing and offering to help resolve any issues this customer has with your company.

You quickly turn a negative situation into a positive outcome that ends up strengthening your company’s brand in the eyes of many.
