Anita Colletti, John R. Wood Agent and former Naples-on-the-Gulf chapter president and current 2012 District Vice President, was appointed as the new 2013 WCR Florida State Secretary. She was elected to this 2013 position at the WCR Florida State convention held in Orlando on August 8, 2012.

Roger Brunswick, John R. Wood Agent and Rotary Club of Bonita mem-ber was one of 110 Rotarians and Veterans who traveled to Washington D.C. on June 9, 2012 as participants in Honor Flight.

Honor Flight is a nonprofit organization that flies veterans for free to our nation’s capital to see the National WWII Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

Roger accompanied 91-year-old WWII Army veteran Gus Smith. Brunswick said that it was a day that he would never forget. “Not having been in the Military, this was one way that I could pay homage to those men and women who served to defend our great country. “

Incidentally, the opening film this year at the Naples International Film Festival at the Philharmonic will be a documentary film called Honor Flight, which is a documentary about this non-profit organization. The Naples International Film Festival begins on November 1, 2012 and runs through November 4, 2012.

Life in Another Realm

its quaint, small-town-on-the-beach charm, Southwest Florida harbors the mystique of being home to some of the wealthiest people in the U.S. It’s no small wonder that The Bank of New York Mellon, one of the oldest and larg-est financial institutions in America with over $200 billion in total assets, chose to locate a branch in Naples because of our fair city’s ability to meet its $1.5 million per-person minimum investable assets requirement.

For the truly wealthy, life in Southwest Florida is about under-statement, discretion and privacy. It is anything but obvious.

Truth be told, because Naples and surrounds offer a slower, more laid-back lifestyle than other havens of the well-to-do; it’s easier to remain anonymous here. Our wealthiest residents appre-ciate that. For them, personal pleasures are much preferred over conspicuous displays of wealth and they pursue those pleasures in ways that elevate themselves and their families above the fray and into a realm of their own. It all occurs well beyond the blindingly

garish spotlight that is all too often embraced by the nouveau rich.

So, how do the wealthy enjoy their time during sojourns to Paradise and just how well-equipped is the area to accommodate their wants and needs? Aviation in various forms is a popular pursuit. The Naples Municipal Airport provides a discreet place to land, maintenance and fueling services, and personal hangar facili-ties for those who choose to arrive via their multi-million dollar pri-vate jets. It also serves as a venue for a growing number of wealthy vintage plane collectors. It’s not at all uncommon to see planes 40 to 50 years old or even older. Although well-heeled Neapolitans aren’t all that taken by hot-air ballooning or gliding, a good number enjoy building and restoring small planes - experimental aircraft as they’re referred to in aviation circles - and Naples has a very active Experimental Aircraft Association chapter. Others will take their helicopters (the nicest of which can cost upwards of $10 million) for a spin. It’s not just Naples’ wealthy males who are attracted to the freedom of the wild blue yonder. A growing number of the private pilots taking their aircraft up for pleasure here are women.

Staying with the “planes, trains and automobiles” motif for a moment, it must be said that a goodly number of the elite love their cars. While the Mercedes, BMW’s, Land Rovers, Bentleys and Rolls Royce’s normally associated with the well-to-do abound on Southwest Florida thoroughfares, the true car aficionados take pride in their classic and exotic car collections. That pride is well-founded. The finest of the exotics, including Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Maseratis and many others, are put on public display each season during the Annual Cars on 5th Show. Over 450 vehicles line 5th Avenue from U.S. 41 west all the way to 3rd Street. With more than 30,000 spectators, Cars on 5th has become the most well attended single day event in the City of Naples.

Yachting in its truest sense is another preferred pastime for the wealthy. Numerous luxury vessels docked in the canals weave their way through Marco Island, Naples, Sanibel, and other waterfront locations. The mega yachts of the mega wealthy sometimes require larger Atlantic coast docking facilities that are a quick helicopter ride away. For power boaters and sailors alike, the area’s well established yacht clubs, such as the Naples Sailing & Yacht Club and the Naples Yacht Club provide a venue for like-minded socializing, regattas, and docking facilities. Fully-crewed or bareboat charters are also available for those who require a wind and water fix or are intent on experienc-ing more extended sailing adventures along Southwest Florida coast or in the Florida Keys.

Others in the wealthiest circles share a passion for horses. Dressage, the highest expression of horse training, is considered the art of equestrian sport and provides the basis for all other riding disciplines. Grand Prix level dressage is a favored pastime for many sophisticated residents, some of whom own highly-rated horses. Several riders in the community have won silver medals in prestigious dressage competitions and a smaller number have been awarded gold medals. With involvement from the Southwest Florida Dressage Association, several local shows are held during the year and there is enough interest here so that riders do not need to travel outside of

the state to compete. The proximity to Wellington in Palm Beach County - the Carnegie Hall of dressage and competitive jumping for equestrians - is a decided plus for residents here.

After an active day, a variety of world-class spa experiences await discerning Neapolitans who are looking to relax and unwind with a little well-deserved pampering.
