PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEWelcome to “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”, the second

production of WVLOA’s 46th season. We hope you enjoy this quirky musical that celebrates the mania of the spelling bee competition and its nerdy contestants.

Our final production of this season in June/July will be the Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic musical, “Sound of Music”, the story of the wonderful Von Trapp Family singers. The show celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and we’re delighted to bring it to this theater.

You’re Invited!!! Whether you are already one of our 1100+ subscribers or here in the Saratoga Civic Theatre for the very first time, we invite you to join us this November for West Valley Light Opera’s 47th season. Due to the increasing costs of production, we have been forced to raise our subscription rates and individual ticket prices. However, we will maintain our policy of not charging any additional fees for tickets purchased through our Box Office and/or with a Credit Card.

Look at Our Centerfold!!! Included in this program is a special blue insert, which we invite you to use to subscribe to WVLOA’s 47th musical season. Subscribe NOW to ensure good seats and substantial savings over the cost of individual tickets. Current subscribers may also use this form to renew for next season. All subscription and individual ticket orders will be processed according to the date on which they are received, but actual tickets will not be assigned or mailed until after this season’s last production has concluded in August.

Let me close by stating that you, the audience members who share your support and enthusiasm for WVLO’S endeavors, make it a truly gratifying experience for all of us involved, both on the stage and behind the scenes. And we extend our special gratitude to those subscribers who have donated additional funds to ensure the excellent quality of sets and costumes that we strive to bring to this stage. We hope that you have a marvelous time at this musical and that you will join us for our future productions.

—Edward Hand, President West Valley Light Opera Association

“THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE” is based upon C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, an original play by The Farm.

The Barrington Stage Company workshop of the “THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE” was originally co-directed by

Michael Barakiva and Rebecca Feldman.

The Farm was founded in 2000 by Rebecca Feldman, Artistic Director. It is a collective of writers and performers, including Jay Reiss, Dan Fogler, and Sarah Saltzberg. The Farm’s interest is in the role of improvisation in creating new work for the theatre. The Farm initially designates a two-week intensive period in which to discover, develop, and rehearse a play from the impulses borne mainly out of the pressure of a deadline. Previous projects include “Super” (at Atlantic Theatre Studios), “Why I Hate Florida” (workshop at White Wave in DUMBO) and “C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E (at the Present Company Theatorium in October 2002), on which “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is based. The character and original dialogue of “Beth Marguiles”, “Vice President Douglas Panch,” “Mr. Barfee” and “Logan Schwarzengrubenierre” were created by Rebecca

Feldman, Jay Reiss, Dan Fogler and Sarah Saltzberg, respectively.

and cultural programs such as ours. Here in the Bay Area, we are fortunate to have many companies that have initiated such programs. Remember, matching contri-butions are not automatic. YOU must notify your employer of your donation, usually at the time you make it. If you are employed by one of these companies and are one of our supporters, take advantage of this wonderful way to support one of your favorite non-profit associations, WVLO. It isn’t too late to match your contribution for this season.

Whenever you donate to a non-profit group like WVLOA, you can double your contribution to the organization by taking advantage of your company’s matching gift program (even after retirement). Perhaps the most popular way for com-panies to make charitable contributions is through a matching contribution pro-gram wherein the company will match, usually one-to-one, the donation one of their employees gives to a favorite char-ity. And often, these companies will only match contributions made to develop arts

Choir Boys. She learned her shopping chops from her late mother, Cele, and enjoys roaming through thrift and antique stores for costume pieces. Judy spends her days as a financial analyst in the IT Department at Stanford University, where she just celebrated her 25th anniversary! Congratulations, Judy, that’s a great milestone!

WHO’S WHO IN OUR ORCHESTRASamuel Cisneros (Keyboard)—Samuel is no stranger to WVLO, since we discovered his wonderful talents over two years ago; his most recent “keyboard” adventure was in last fall’s “White Christmas”. He is also the resident accompanist for the STOCtet concerts presented each Christmas and their Cabaret Concerts in June. Other theatrical productions have recognized his talents and put his artistry to the test as well; namely, SCP, ATC, and many others too numerous to mention. Marty McHan (Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Flute and Oboe)—This will be the 53rd orchestra that Marty has been part of in our WVLO pit since he started back in 1976 with “Sweethearts”. In “West Side Story”, he celebrated his 50th Golden Musical in our orchestra by playing Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Oboe, English Horn, Flute and Piccolo—he needed a truck to transport them all each night! His most recent production was in the pit for SBMT’s “A Funny Thing…Forum”, but he has also played for SCP, SJCMT, PYT, TITM, El Camino Opera, and has been playing clarinet in the Winchester Orchestra for the last 10 years. Marty has also given his musical talents to several school productions in the Bay Area. His family includes his wife, MaryLouise, as well as a grown son and daughter and the highlight of his career was earning a Rockefeller Fellowship to study in Austria. The only hobby he has time for is baking cookies! What a loyal musician and supporter Marty is—a true musical treasure to Community Theater!!Bob Wylie (Percussion)—Bob has lived most of his life in the Bay Area and now lives in El Granada. He retired from Chevron in 1992 not long after returning from a nine-year loan assignment as a Systems Analyst to the Exploration and Producing Division of the Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO) in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Bob found that lots of his fellow ARAMCONs were actively involved in musical theater which rekindled his own interest in musical performance. He was lucky enough play “in the pit” for “Barnum” in Ras Tanura and in “Guys & Dolls” in Dhahran (two of his favorites).Upon returning home to the US and retiring from Chevron, Bob was introduced to the rich world of Bay Area community theater and has since played percussion for many productions on the SF Peninsula and in Silicon Valley. Bob most recently played percussion for WVLO’s “White Christmas” last fall.

Our apologies and thanks to any staff, crew or other contributor whom we failed to mention due to the early publication deadline of this program

Helen Gruner (Logainne)—Another newcomer to WVLO, Helen grew up in LA in a family of loud-mouths (her words), which she later discovered that yelling on pitch produced an effect called singing. She has several theatrical credits in the Bay Area, including “Godspell” with SCP, as well as “Rent” and “Little Women, The Musical” with PAP, Other favorite productions were “Into The Woods”, ”Bat Boy, The Musical”, “The Mikado” and “Cabaret”.
