The families of twenty-one Vietnam War heroes from Lee County who died in the line of duty will be

honored as a traveling wall monument visits the Lee County Sports Complex January 27-29.

The wall is being brought to the area by Chuck Wininger and his Cajun Classic organization, which seeks to give veterans returning from the war zone a hero’s welcome and to help them acclimate to civilian life while enjoying outings like fishing, football or golf.

As a Vietnam War veteran, Wininger wants to give these soldiers

what he didn’t get when he returned from battle. He remembers someone shouting “baby killer” at him in the San Francisco airport.

“We were treated so harshly when we came back,” he said. “Now we’re

trying to make their homecoming more like the World War II veterans. For us, it’s a healing thing.”

Wininger not only organizes outings -- supported by the annual Cajun Classic golf tournament -- his group also provides everything needed for top-notch weddings at the Pink Shell Resort in Fort Myers Beach.

“My mission in life is to help these kids,” Wininger said.

Sometimes that means helping veterans navigate the complex VA financial aid system to mine for hidden benefits.

“It’s a broken system, but it’s not as bad as most people think,” he said.

The traveling wall is a half-sized replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. It is about one-third the length of Hammond Stadium and includes more than 58,000 names of military personnel killed in the Vietnam War.

Wininger is attempting to track down relatives of the twenty-one who lived in Lee County for a special

military escort and other honors when the wall comes to town.

He is expecting more than 5,000 people to show up to run their fingers over the names of fallen heroes and listen to speakers honor veterans from every U.S. combat mission and branch of the military.

“We’re going to honor all veterans,” he said.

The event also will feature an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for a trip for two to the 2012 Ryder Cup in Medinah, Ill, with a $100 donation to the Cajun Classic. The prize includes airfare for two to Chicago, tickets for practice rounds at the Ryder Cup and a condo for one week.

The winner will be announced at the Cajun Classic May 19. Since Wininger is a New Orleans native, the annual golf tournament features crawfish, gumbo and other culinary delights from “The Big Easy.”

Donors will be celebrated and stories of hope shared during the tenth annual 107.1 Cat Country “Helping Kids with Cancer” Radiothon. The

12-hour live broadcast from Miromar Outlets will be January 20 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“It is an exciting day,” said Duane Higgins, director of development for Lee Memorial Health Systems Foundation. “It is a day where we recognize and thank those who have given and encourage new donors to give as we all come together to support our local children’s cancer program.”

As the Radiothon celebrates its tenth year, Health Park Medical

Center celebrates its twentieth anniversary, and plans are underway for ground to break on the new Children’s Hospital building in 2013.

The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida is one of just

nine centers in the state providing care for children diagnosed with cancer or blood disorders. Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease for children in the United States under the age of 15.

Under the direction of Dr. Emad Salman, The Barbara’s Friends Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Outpatient Center has treated more than 3,500 young cancer patients, with half of them being uninsured or on Medicaid. The hospital never denies treatment based an a family’s inability to pay.

“We raised $250,000 last year, and this year we hope to exceed that,” Higgins said. “This is our helping kids with cancer fund, which really undergirds the children’s pediatric program here at Lee Memorial.”

In the last nine years, the Radiothon has raised more than $1 million for Barbara’s Friends. One hundred percent of donations go toward helping kids with cancer.

“It’s a tremendous thing,” Higgins said.

The day will include interviews with patients, parents, doctors and other members of the medical team. Those who stop by the Radiothon also will have the opportunity to meet local DJs and news anchors.

Higgins especially encourages area residents to consider becoming a Guardian Angel. With a commitment of $25 a month (or $300), an individual or organization can become a dedicated supporter, helping provide lifesaving care to children with cancer here in southwest Florida.

Supporting Barbara’s Friends means helping fund a myriad of services including a dedicated child and family counseling program, a pediatric pharmacy, a medical library, an indoor therapeutic play area and a music room.

TRISH LEONARD IS A SEER AND A DOER, POSSESSING A RARE COMBINATION OF VISION AND ZEAL WHICH GENERATES POSITIVE CHANGE FOR SOUTH LEE COUNTY.

She recently added “Woman of the Year” to her repertoire of accolades, having previously been dubbed “Woman of Style” and “Woman of Distinction” by N Magazine.

The 2011 Woman of the Year award was presented by the Zonta Club of

Bonita Springs during its annual Glass Slipper Ball in November and honored Leonard for her business savvy, as well as her tireless giving to local charitable and civic causes.

“Trish was nominated by more than one person,” said Zonta President Patty Gift. “She’s involved in so many different things, and she really pours herself

into everything she does. She is an amazing person. We just couldn’t not pick her.”

The list of Leonard’s affiliations is long, including Florida Gulf Coast University, the Speakers Assembly of Southwest Florida and the European American Network, to name a few.

In her office at the FGCU Small Business Development Center, where she is director of marketing and the 2011 Regional Employee of the Year, hangs a plaque which sums up her personal philosophy: “Kindness Matters.”

Another favorite is a phrase which once jumped out at her from a poster hanging in a doctor’s office: “You’re not alone.” Weaving these simple ideas together, Leonard has created meaningful connections between people, serving as somewhat of a philanthropic matchmaker.

“I feel an obligation to bring people together,” said Leonard, who has lived in Estero for 12 years. “It’s like a puzzle. You put the people together who need to be connected.”

That often means dragging

someone across the room at a chamber of commerce “after hours” to meet another like-minded soul with a similar passion. One thing leads to another, causing a chain reaction of community service, as exemplified in Leonard’s own life.

A few years ago, she connected with Christin Collins at a Bonita Springs Chamber event, and a casual conversation about party dresses spawned Love That Dress, now one of the most successful fundraisers for the PACE Center for Girls. The event, held in Estero last August, allows women to shop for donated formal wear at bargain prices so they always have something fresh to wear and have an avenue for recycling old party dresses.

Now Leonard has another philanthropic idea brewing with The Salvation Army to help underprivileged families. She can identify with those going through hard times, having grown up in a dysfunctional environment in upstate New York.

TRISH LEONARDold I was going to make a difference,” Leonard said. “I see things that others don’t, ways to create fellowship, to take organizations and make them better.”

Community service is a common theme for every organization Leonard is involved with, including the Commercial Sales Industry Professionals of Southwest Florida (CSIP), which she founded five years ago while working in marketing for an architectural firm.

“This group is still holding strong even through the bad times,” she proudly said. “That’s the most important time to stick together.”

As a past president of Zonta, Leonard spearheaded a project to supply laundry, bathroom and kitchen items to recipients of Habitat for Humanity homes in Bonita’s Rosemary Park.

“They had these beautiful homes and nothing to put in them,” she recalled.

In 2012, Leonard plans to team up with Habitat again to promote its “Women Build” initiative, bringing women from all walks of life together to refurbish homes during the week preceding Mother’s Day.

She also plans to reunite alumni of Leadership Bonita, a 13-year-old program of the Bonita Springs Chamber of Commerce designed to enlighten and engage emerging local leaders.

“Let’s take that wealth of knowledge and do something,” said Leonard, a 2003 graduate who is organizing a spring refresher for alumni.

For Leonard, the New Year is a time to reflect on which commitments she will continue and what new initiatives she should undertake. She currently serves as president of the European American Network (EAN), vice chair of the City of Bonita Springs Art in Public Places and a board member for the Speakers Assembly, which brings noteworthy speakers on an array of topics to

Southwest Florida.“I love to learn about what different

people and other organizations are doing to see if there’s a better way,” Leonard said. “Every day I learn something new.”

She then puts her knowledge to work by enriching someone else’s life. In her position at the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), Leonard helps entrepreneurs hash out business plans and obtain

financing.“She gets things done, and she

does it well,” said SBDC Director Dan Regelski. “She contributes more to us than we give her.”

That includes bringing fresh-baked goodies to Tuesday staff meetings.

Leonard never wants to be a seat-warmer. When she chooses to get involved in an organization, it’s total commitment.

“I don’t do things for Trish Leonard,” she explained. “I do things to make a better community and a better world.”

Her compassion was evidenced early in life as a young McDonald’s manager working the night shift in North Fort Myers. She would hand out leftover hamburgers and coffee to homeless people, despite

admonishment from her superiors.“I got in trouble for it all the time,”

recalled Leonard, who worked her way up the corporate ladder during a 20-year career with McDonald’s. She now runs her own marketing firm, TLC Marketing and Creative Services, along with her charitable work and her role at FGCU.

Although her life is busy, she retreats each Monday evening to her Marsh Landing condo for “Me

Mondays,” when she de-stresses through gardening or baking “anything with coconut, chocolate and pecans.”

She spends time on weekends with her longtime boyfriend, recently retired Bonita Springs City Manager Gary Price, tending a large garden on his property in Bonita. She also enjoys time with her two sons and three grandkids, who all live in Lee County.

Leonard will always make time for providing leadership and giving back to her local community.

“She does so many things, she makes me look like I sit still, even though I sit on three boards,” Gift said. “Overall, the community is much better off because of Trish Leonard. I really admire her.”

Changing Banks Landscape

Making Sense of Technology; Tools you can use in 2012

CHANGING BANKS LANDSCAPEWHEN MANY BANKS AND OTHER LENDERS WERE MAKING SUB-PRIME MORTGAGES AND

COMPLEX ADJUSTABLE RATE LOANS SEVERAL YEARS AGO, BB&T KEPT FOCUSING ON THE OTHER LENDING IT HAD USED TO BUILD A HISTORY OF PROFITABILITY.

“Our goal has always been to help consumers and businesses achieve economic success and financial stability,” said Michael Oster, BB&T’s regional president for South Florida. “We didn’t see how making loans that a lot of people might not be able to pay would help them and us reach those goals.”

By staying its course with business lending and traditional mortgages, Winston-Salem, N.C.-based BB&T avoided the real estate problems that are still an issue for many banks. It also has continued to grow in Florida and other states.

In 2012, BB&T will become a bigger player in the fast-changing banking landscape in Broward County and around Florida. The

adjacent chart points to some key developments in how that landscape, and bank names, has kept changing since the 1980s.

The latest big change came on Nov. 1, when BB&T announced an agreement to buy BankAtlantic which has been the largest bank based in Broward.

When the deal is completed, likely in the spring of 2012, BB&T will move up from 11th to fourth place in deposits in Broward, It will have just over $2.5 billion in deposits at approximately 45 offices in the county.

The sale of BankAtlantic will leave Stonegate Bank as the largest bank headquartered in Broward. Stonegate, based in Fort Lauderdale, had $848 million in

New Year brings some changes to local banking scene.

assets on Sept. 30. That included business at its branches in several counties on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Stonegate opened in 2005. It quickly became profitable, and among Florida banks it has one of the lowest ratios of problem loans to total loans.

“We decided not to have speculative land and development loans as a major part of our business,” said David Seleski, Stonegate’s president and CEO.

A main reason behind the lingering banking crisis is the large number of loans that were made on condominiums and other housing projects that have not been completed.

Stonegate has what Seleski calls a diversified lending mix of commercial loans, residential mortgages and so-called “owner-occupied loans” for businesses to buy properties they use for their operations.

But many other South Florida-based banks are feeling stymied in their efforts to expand in those areas of lending, said Kenneth Thomas, president of bank consulting firm K. H. Thomas Associates in Miami.

Some of those banks are under enforcement actions from regulators, with orders that include increasing their capital-to-asset ratios and reducing the percentages of real estate loans in their portfolios. Basically, every dollar retained in capital is a dollar that a bank is not lending.

“They simply cannot do much lending since the focus must be on

cleaning up bad loans, not making any new ones,” Thomas said.

He added that some banks that are not under enforcement actions are being told by regulators to keep writing down the values of some loans that banks feel are fairly valued. That requires a bank to keep increasing its loan loss reserves, a step that reduces its earnings.

Amid these problems, Thomas expects that 2012 will be another year when bank failures and what he calls “shadow failures” with investment groups buying troubled banks will be a major story in Florida.

Thus, BB&T and several other large and well capitalized banks that are relative newcomers have the potential to play major roles in meeting South Florida’s growing demand for business loans and residential mortgages.

Chase, based in New York, and PNC, based in Pittsburgh, are prominent on that list. So is TD Bank, the U.S. subsidiary of Toronto Dominion Bank.

Those banks have expanded in South Florida primarily by buying banks from other states that had

2011Winston-Salem, N.C.-based BB&T agrees to buy Fort Lauderdale-based BankAtlantic, the biggest bank based in Broward County.

2001First Union merges into Wachovia Bank, also-based in North Carolina.

1998Nations Bank merges with Bank of America, based in San Francisco. They keep the B of A name, with headquarters in Charlotte.

2008 onwardThe crisis in residential lending and the housing market lead to a second wave of bank failures. In 2010, there were 157 bank failures, including 29 in Florida.

2009Regulators take over Coral Gables-based BankUnited, the biggest bank based in South Florida, because of problem mortgages. An investment group buys non-problem assets, puts in new capital and keeps the BankUnited names and branches.

branch networks in Broward and other counties. Several of their acquisitions were of failed banks through the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., such as BB&T’s 2009 purchase of Alabama-based Colonial Bank.

BB&T and other newcomers “must overcome issues of ‘who are these guys?’ and ‘what do the initials stand for,?’” Thomas said.

He feels that BB&T has “built a good reputation” in its operations and added that it has been selective in buying banks.

BB&T has $168 billion in assets and is among the country’s 20 largest banks.

“We have the capital that some other banks might not have access to in the current market,” Oster said. “We can lend to large businesses and we lend to businesses of all sizes.”

Oster and other BB&T officials cannot discuss details of the

pending BankAtlantic merger because it requires approval from banking regulators.

One likelihood is that BB&T will succeed BankAtlantic with the naming rights at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise.

“We are very interested in opportunities at the BankAtlantic Center and are in discussions with people there,” Oster said.

That added brand recognition could help BB&T in the South Florida market where Oster is finding “a more aggressive competition” in business lending among large and smaller banks that do not have capital problems.

Seleski said he has been seeing more competition among banks for commercial loans.

In the residential market he is finding that “about 60 percent of the sales are still cash.”

Seleski said that in 2005 he never would have expected that

He and Thomas each expect more future waves of bank name changes, mixed with mergers, in South Florida.

When the economy is strong it is a ripe time for start-ups, such as Stonegate in 2005, and for banks from other states to buy profitable banks in Florida.

During downturns, there will be more opportunities for banks like BB&T and Chase to buy failed banks in deals where the FDIC takes many of the problem loans.

The sale of BankAtlantic will leave just 16 banks with headquarters in Broward. Behind Stonegate as the largest as of Sept. 30 are Community Bank of Broward, based in Weston with $476 million in assets, and Regent Bank, based in Davie, with $447 million in assets.

“I prefer the Apple iPhone becausethere are almost 250,000 apps in the iTunes store,” says Mark Segal, a sales representative from CoralSprings. “Last I checked Android hasonly 70,000 or so.”

But for others the sheer amount of apps can be overwhelming.

“It can be like an addiction,” says Roberta Edwards of Fort Lauderdale.“Aside from the cost, I find that I only use a few apps so I can still get by with my old Blackberry. My basic needsare email and a calendar, navigation and Google. I laugh at my friends who load their phones up with these apps. How much do we really need or use?It gets too complicated. I’m all aboutkeeping it simple.”

Paul Lorenzi and his wife/partner Hope dream of someday hitting it big by developing a popular app. The couple, who are spending the winter in Parkland, are big critics of the Android Market, because over half the apps in that store are free.

“Here we are trying to revive our economy and Google which rules the world is offering all of these free apps,” says Paul. “That makes it hard for innovators to make it. In the iPhone App Store, only a very small percentage of apps are free.”

“I want to serve both platforms,” adds Hope. “You cannot ignore the Android, they have such a large shareof the market.”

Most of the readers who responded to our queries gave the iPhone high marks for media, music, photos and movies. The iPhone also scores high for travel and kids’ stuff.

“My kids love my iPhone for the games,” says Constance Hendersonof Estero. “My husband calls it an expensive pacifier.”

Android is popular for socialnetworking and dining out.

As for the Blackberry, it appearsthe original monster of the category has lost some of its luster, if not the loyalty of some users.

“I’m loyal,” writes Sami Glazer of Coral Springs. “It’s been tough to be loyal and my friends flaunt their Droids and Apple’s all the time, but the Blackberry has been a loyal friendfor years and I’m rooting for them to get back on track.”

I swear to you, adopt exercise into your 2012 lifestyle and you will see a dramatic change in the way you feel; exercise gives you energy.

Now, I understand life gets hectic. Sometimes work hours go into overtime and business trips happen. If you are really pressed for time

then buy a jump rope. You can find a jump rope for under $10 and they are travel friendly. Take ten extra minutes in the morning to jump rope. Ten minutes of jumping rope can burn up to 120 calories; this will also raise your heart rate and get your body warm, which in turn will burn more calories throughout your day. Ten minutes in the morning…everybody has ten minutes.

Exercise is only half the battle in improving your health in 2012. Your diet plays an equal and vital role. I ask the clients I train to keep a food journal so we know when and what they are eating. This is a huge factor in weight loss and gain. You will be surprised to find that if you adapt a few simple rules to your food consumption it is easier to shed those pounds.

Eat something within 60 minutes of rising. The old saying breakfast is the most important part of your day is true. You need to eat within 60 minutes of rising to jump start your metabolism. This is so important! Please, I beg you to eat when you wake up...did I mention eat a healthy breakfast. I rotate between 3 healthy breakfasts, they are:

Low fat Greek yogurt, blueberries, almonds (protein, antioxidants, good fat)Oatmeal, blueberries, low fat milk (whole grains/fiber, antioxidants, good fat)One egg fried with olive oil, 1 piece of whole wheat bread, 2 slices of avocado (protein, whole grains/fiber, good fat)If you are pressed for time, at the bare minimum grab a

piece of fruit. Remember to eat something for breakfast and make it healthy. I can’t stress to you the importance of eating breakfast enough.

Eat five small meals a day. I know everyone has heard this over and over, but it’s essential for living a healthy lifestyle, losing weight and keeping it off. Eating five small meals a day keeps your metabolism up, because you are eating so frequently, you never feel hungry. You should never eat so much in a sitting that you feel stuffed, EVER! This stretches out your stomach and increases your appetite. Also, if you know you are going to be out a long while carry

healthy foods with you. I recommend pre-packaged servings of a healthy nut like almonds. If you buy pre-packaged then you will stay in portion control. Nuts are a great source of good fat your body needs, you just have to be careful you don’t over consume, which is why pre-packaged portions are fabulous.

Have healthy meals readily available in your refrigerator. At the beginning of every week I bake 4 large chicken breasts and 4 99% lean turkey burgers. I stick this lean, healthy, protein in the fridge so I know all I have to do is warm it up and it’s ready for me to nosh on. Choose lean cuts of protein like chicken breast, salmon, or turkey over fatty meats.

Incorporate colorful fruits and vegetables into your daily diet. A good rule of thumb is to look down at your plate, if you don’t see bright colors, add it. Greens like spinach and kale are wonderful for you. Red and green bell peppers are healthy and add a little spice. Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, all of these wonderful berries are full of antioxidants. Whatever you choose, make sure it comes from the earth and is colorful.

I wish you good health in 2012. Start off the year right by exercising a minimum 3 times a week for 30-60 minutes. Always eat breakfast, choose lean protein, and add color to your meals. Five small meals a day will keep your metabolism up. Here’s to the New Year and the new you!

Ramsburg, who was inducted into the Pavek Museum of BroadcastingHall of Fame in 2006, seems tohave been born with a destiny in broadcasting.

Adding to his God-given set of pipes, Ramsburg unknowingly trained his talent by mimicking the radioannouncers he grew up listening to as an only child living with his mother in a suburb of Minneapolis, his father having died when he was an infant.

“I found myself alone a lot of thetime listening to radio,” recalled Ramsburg, who came of age as thegolden era of network radio was dying out to the new medium of television.“I always had a love for radio. It was my constant companion.”

Now, after a 50-year career in broadcasting, Ramsburg has written a book chronicling the history of network radio, a bygone but not forgotten era of pop culture whichstill fascinates many today.

“Network Radio in its Golden Age was commercial broadcasting atits highest level,” Ramsburg writes in the first chapter of “Network Radio Ratings, 1932-1953.” “It was a hard-nosed business based in technology, capitalized upon by industry, loosely controlled by government, exploited by marketersof consumer goods, ruled by dollars

and dictated by rby ratingnggngs.”””Although he ended up in radioended ddd upupupup iiiinnnn radio,

Ramsburg studied journalism at thernalism at thUniversity of Minnesota, working onthe student newspaper staff, wherehe met his wife of 54 years, Patty.

“She’s the best thing I ever got out

of college,” he likes to say.Ramsburg started working the

night shift at a local Twin Cities radiostation during the summers. Hiscareer path became settled one nightwhen he received an unexpected call from the manager of “the newWDGY,” a station recently purchased by Todd Storz, known as the father of Top 40 radio.

Ramsburg’s raddddioii career took him to Des Moinees, FFFort Lauderdale,Albany, Kansas CCity,yy, Los Angeles, Dallas and finally bacack to Minneapolis, where he and Patty, along with their long with theirtwo children, finally settled.

In 1976, they started RamsburgMedia Services, filling a niche market for broadcast advertising in a time when 95 percent of advertising was still in print. The couple retired toEstero in 1998.

Ramsburg is considered one of the founding fathers of Estero’scivic activism, serving as spokesmanfor the Estero Concerned CitizensOrganization, which later evolvedinto today’s Estero Council of Community Leaders.

He remains active, helping choose Estero’s “Village Visionary” awardrecipients and speaking on Esterohistory during “Village with a Vision” presentations throughout the year.

“I rediscovered the fun of working with a live audience,” he said. “I love to get out and teach throughentertainment.”
