Acouple of Fridaysago, I told every-one in my life thatI was going to bed
and I was going to take the
phone off the hook, turn offall electronics that had theremote possibility of waking
e up, put cereal on thecounter for those who need-ed breakfast, I threatenedsevere bodily injury if any-one under the height of 6 3
udged, prodded or whis-ered at me, pulled the
blinds and slept as late as mybody allowed. What was Idoing to be this tire? My
ody was tired and I neededto listen to what it was say-ing to me.
We use terms like exhaus-ion, weakness and fatigue to
describe different levels ofeing tired.
The impor tant thing tonderstand is that each of
hese terms are symptoms.Symptoms of some other
ause that is making you feelhis way.
Yes, they could be symp-oms of something serious,ike a specific disease or
hysical ailment. They could
also be symptoms occurringfrom lifestyle issues that areoccurring in your life. So thefirst thing to do is to figureout whats happening in yourlife thats making you sotired.
Fatigue is a feeling oftiredness, exhaustion, orlack of energy.
You may feel mildlyfatigued because of over-work, poor sleep, boredom,poor nutrition, lack of exer-cise and stress.
Any illness, such as a coldor the flu, may cause fatigue,which usually goes away asthe illness clears up. Most ofthe time, if mild fatigueoccurs it should improvewhen the stressor or issue isremoved from your life. Iffatigue lasts longer than acouple of weeks, you mightwant to visit your favoritehealth professional. Thiskind of fatigue could be anindication of a more serious
health problem.
Now in my case, I knewwhy my body was physicallyexhausted and heres what Idid about it.
First, I listened to my bodyand I recognized its tired-ness. I went through a pro-cess of figuring out what Iwas doing and not doing toreach this state of exhaus-tion. Heres what I discov-ered:
Rest and exercise. Exer-cise and rest. They are both
culprits in the exhaustionequation. First, exercise isimportant to avoid fatigue,tiredness and exhaustion.Individuals who do not exer-cise on a regular basis suffermore from fatigue issuesthan individuals who exer-cise on a regular basis. Exer-cise is an energy booster.With that being said, exer-cising too much without theappropriate amount of restcan also be a culprit ofexhaustion and fatigue. Is ita fine line? Not really,because most of us dontexercise at a repeated inten-sity that would cause ourbodies to be physically
exhausted from exerciseitself. Most of us exercise atan intensity level that is per-fect for health.
Rest (or sleep), on the
other hand, could be more ofa factor in this exhaustionequation. Sleep alone cancause many terrible healthissues, including majorfatigue and exhaustion. Areyou getting enough sleep?Are you sleeping well? Areyou sleeping well on a regu-lar basis? If you dont rest or
sleep your body will not havethe opportunity to heal,repair itself or energize itselffrom the cellular level on upto being able to function.
Nutrition. Its easy towant to skimp on eatingwhen our lives get busierand harder. We must makesure that we are replacing
important nutrients and calo-ries that our bodies areusing. This is true on a dailybasis, if you do not eat well,
you will feel fatigued andexhausted. Good nutrientsallow for energy productionand feeling well.
Vitamin and mineral
supplementation. With ourbusy lives and the frequentopportunities to not eat prop-erly, its important that yousupplement your body with agood healthy multi-vitamin.We use up many essentialseveryday that must bereplaced in order to keepour energy up. Vitamins are
important particularly if youare feeling fatigued.
Hydration. Hydration isa most important key in thefatigue equation. Make sureyou are staying hydratedwith straight-up water. Fol-low everything you drinkwith an equal por tion ofwater, its an easy way to
make sure you are gettingenough.

Lad and I worked a lottogether on a largeranch, caring for thecattle, haying and
such. We had to re-build a
corral one winter. We hadthe time between the usualother chores and the corralwas getting in rough shape.
Since it was pretty cold, wewore heavy coats and gloves,earflaps, and the usual silkneckerchiefs around our
ecks.Mine was longer than the
standard ones, which wraparound your neck twice, withust enough left to tie a
square knot leaving the endsa couple inches or so inlength. It wasnt long enough
to wrap around my neckthree times, so the free endswere longer than usual. Icaught a lot of flack from theother hands on the ranchabout my pretty, necker-chief that blew in the wind.
The ranch owner rented aposthole digger, mounted ona skid steer tractor, and a fel-low who claimed to be anoperator to run it. Im surehe never handled heavyequipment in his life. Theholes werent in line, he
wouldnt spin the augur fastenough to lift the dirt out ofthe hole and never wentdeep enough.
Every time we had to re-
dig a post hole, there wasanother joke about the oper-ator, about the mis-alignmentof the hole or a hundred oth-er things. We both liked tolaugh and when other ranchhands were there to helpthey would get caught up inthe joking as well.
One particular day was
windier than usual and withbending over, hammering,sawing, digging, pulling andpushing, the ends of theneckerchief were alwaysblowing in the wind.
I had a cold and wascoughing quite a bit. In themiddle of a coughing spell,the wind whipped one end ofmy silk scarf over my mouth.
I sucked in a big breathand the end of the silk wil-drag. I couldnt get enoughair to breath, holler orsqueak.
Lad was trimming the endof a pole with a chain saw, sohe wouldnt have been ableto hear me anyway.

out of my trachea and beganchuckling. I could hear hislaughter over the sound ofthe chainsaw. The more helaughed the harder hesqueezed the gas feed andthe louder the motor got.
I got the neckerchief out ofmy throat okay and we bothhad a good laugh at the situa-
tion, but I knew Id better tellthe story to the other cow-boys first, or he would makeit even more embarrassing.
