ETCS – a range of advantages

SBB • Infrastructure • IRSE London • 15.11.20114

Higher speeds and short train headways on new lines are only possible with cab signalling.

Travel time &network capacity

In the future, railway undertakings are allowed to access networks with “ETCS only”.

Owner specifications call for the implementation of European interoperability, with priority given to the Rotterdam-Genoa corridor.

The Swiss ZUB/SIGNUM systems are reaching the end of their life cycles and have to be replaced.

What is Limited Supervision?

Limited Supervision is not a cab signalling.

Limited Supervision is a background supervision (similar to the existing ATP systems).

The driver drives according to lineside signals, speed tables, rules and regulations, just like for existing ATP systems.

Only the necessary information for a safe and efficient journey is displayed to the driver.

Conclusions

39

Migrate to ETCS L1LS as economically as possible− assuring compatibility for non-ETCS rolling stock− offering network access for «ETCS-only» vehicles for

Corridor A (2015) and network wide (2017).

Experiences with ETCS L2 on HSL lines have proven …

− ERTMS is a fully reliable ATP-System on mixed traffic lines.

Migration of rolling stock towards «ETCS-only» continues.

From 2025 onwards …

− increase implementation of ETCS Level 2 on existing lines.
