The following data is from 500. There are two possible post-fixes after each variable. The first indicates the year it wasmeasured, and an optional second notes the value as the upper confidence limit (_ucl) and lower confidence limit (_lcl) ofthat year’s measure. For example, MHLTH_16_ucl is the upper confidence limit of the poor mental health variablemeasured in 2016. Please note that all measures exclude those who refused to answer, had a missing answer, or answered“don’t know/not sure”ACCESS2 Current

The following measures are from DataWorks. There are two possible post-fixes after each variable. The first indicatesthe year it was measured, and an optional second notes the value as the margin of error (_moe). For example,MEDINC_11_moe is the margin of error for median household income in 2011. Please note that with all measurements fromthe American Community Survey in the Neighborhood Compass, this data represents 5 years’ worth of surveying. With eachannual update, the 5-year period advances by dropping one year and incorporating the next. For this reason, annual releasesof this measurement are not suitable for true time series comparison until no overlap exists among the survey periods.

The data included in the following two measures reflect active voters only. The Board of Elections codes voters ’inactive’ when their mostrecent address may be inaccurate. Due to the potentially inaccurate addresses of inactive voters, this spatial analysis relies only on the activevoters. As of January 2014, there were 176,148 active voters out of a total 200,885 registered in Durham County.

The calculation of this measurement uses the Simpson Index ofDiversity, which measures the variety and evenness of differentgroups. The component numbers for this measure are blockgroupcounts of White (not Hispanic), Black or African American (notHispanic), Asian (not Hispanic), Hispanic or Latino/a, Two orMore Races (not Hispanic), and Other (not Hispanic). A highernumber in this measure reflects both a higher number ofrace/ethnicity categories present and more people of each identitypresent. A diversity measurement of 1 would mean all race andethnicity identities are present and equally represented, while ameasure of 0 would indicate only one race or ethnicity is present.

The calculation of this measurement uses the Simpson Index ofDiversity, which measures the variety and evenness of differentgroups. A higher number in this measure reflects both a highernumber of land use types in each area and a more balancednumber of properties among them. Parcels are categorized as:agricultural, residential, commercial, recreation, industrial, community services, public services (utilities), wild and forestedlands. A measure of 1 would mean each of the possible types ofland use is present and that there is an equal number of each. Ameasure of 0 would mean only one type is present.

For the following 24 measures (those related to CKD, diabetes, heart attacks, and strokes), please note that this information is from DukeHealth and Lincoln Community Health Center, provided by Duke’s Center for Community and Population Health Improvement.Furthermore, please note that to determine metrics for a particular year, Duke Health Technology only includes adult patients who had anencounter in that same calendar year. When a patient has an interaction with a healthcare provider, this is called an encounter. Anencounter can be a single, brief event (such as a regular primary care appointment) or it can be across multiple days (such as a hospital stay). If a patient had a hospitalization that lasted multiple days across two calendar years (e.g. 12/15/15 – 1/15/16), DHT used the discharge dateto determine their inclusion.

REVAL Tax ValueChange

This rate of change is derived from parcel point data from 2014(previous to the most recent property tax revaluation) and 2016.2015 records were not used for the before-and-after comparisonbecause many but not all records for 2015 parcels alreadyincluded revalued estimates and the appeal process had not yetbegun. The number reported here is a median rate of change forevery property in a blockgroup. Properties with zero value in2014 or zero values in both years were excluded from thiscalculation to prevent skewing by outliers.
