Official Air-Stream Wireless Newsletter
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ethernet Wiring Standard; Which One Is Right? There are many standards for crimping Twisted Pair cables, these standards specify
the order in which the wires go to ensure compatibility with other devices. The
intention of this article is to show you the two most common wiring layouts and
give you some tips in which may be better for your applications.
Ethernet uses two standards, TIA/EIA568A and TIA/EIA568B. These standards
specify the wire order in the RJ45 Plug/Socket. These two standards are used
within the Air-Stream network and the wider community. So which one should you
use? There is much debate within industry which is the right one to use. The
simple answer is, they are both right. This news isn’t all that helpful though; what
is helpful is knowing some facts about what cable you are using and what you are
using it for.
Ethernet Wiring Standard; Which One Is Right? Many cable manufacturers specify
which standard to use, this is not
always an easy thing to find. Standard
CAT6 and Outdoor CAT5e/6 specify the
use of the TIA/EIA568B standard of
crimping this however doesn’t mean
that you cannot crimp that cable in the
TIA/EIA568A standard but you may
find it more difficult.
Some cables such as the Ubiquiti
Toughcable specify that you should use
the TIA/EIA568B standard, if you
attempt to crimp in the 568A standard
you may find it difficult; this is due to
the arrangement of the pairs
within the cable sheath.
So the information that you need to
know. The pin outs and the standard
that is used throughout the
majority of the network.
The following graphics show the two
different pin outs that are commonly
used, TIA/EIA568A and TIA/EIA568B.
The Air-Stream network team
commonly use the TIA/EIA568B
standard on Ubiquiti Toughcable as do
many members. As always if you are
unsure about something |
contact the Network team
and come along to one of our builds.
There is no better way to learn about
wireless networking than by
participating in a build!
Network Updates
High Gate Park
As a part of the final 802.11n upgrades
from 2012 High Gate Park was treated to
two new dishes to finish this project off.
The link to Skye was upgraded from a Hills
26dB Single Polarity Grid to a Ubiquiti
NanoBridge M5-25 Dual Polarity Dish. This
has significantly increased the bandwidth
between the sites. The other upgrade was
finishing off the relocation of the
HighGatePark-Ridgehaven link to
HighGatePark-FPA-Teringie. The Hills 29dB
Single Polarity Grid was exchanged for a
Ubiquiti RocketDish 5G30. The photo on
the right of this page is how the Northern
mast now looks at High Gate Park.
Gulfview Heights
Upgrades were performed last weekend
on Gulfview Heights to increase 5ghz
coverage for the north western suburbs
and to initiate the upgrade between EARC
and Gulfview Heights. A 90 degree 5ghz
sector was installed pointing West which
will allow many members to connect to
another great site. It will also allow
IngleFarm to connect with its spare dish as
a redundant path for when UniSA is down
due to power works. The link to EARC was
also upgraded from a Hills 26dB Single
Polarity Grid to a Ubiquiti RocketDish
5G30, as EARC does not yet have a Ubiquiti
dish at the other end the link has been
connected to one of the 5ghz sectors at
EARC which is still giving >30mbit of
throughput! You can see photos of this
upgrade on the second page of this Air-
Zine.
Upcoming Projects
Suntrix-Hermitage is a new build in
Lower Hermitage, this will provide
amazing connectivity between EARC
and Modbury North.
EARC is half built, now awaiting
more radio gear to be installed.
Q: What is ‘Air-Stream’? Air-Stream Wireless was established by a handful of dedicated wireless enthusiasts in 2001 and became an Incorporated Association in September 2002. It is the first and largest Community Wireless Network (CWN) in South Australia to successfully build a Wide Area Network (WAN) using wireless technologies. With hundreds of active members the network now forms part of the largest community wireless network in Australia and is continuing to grow with the help of wireless enthusiasts and radio amateurs across Adelaide and Australia.
Q: Want to know more? If you want to know more about anything Air-Stream you can always email us! committee @ air-stream.org
Q: Got something to sell? Our monthly members meetings draw a crowd of likeminded people, if you have surplus equipment to sell bring it along. Check out the Air-Stream website for upcoming meeting dates and locations.
