ETHICAL DILEMMAAn ethical dilemma is a complex situation that often involves

an apparent mental conflict between moral imperatives, in which to obey one would result in transgressing another.

Sometimes called ethical paradoxes in moral philosophy, ethical dilemmas are often invoked in an attempt to refute an ethical system or moral code, or to improve it so as to resolve the paradox.

An eg; of ED..• I had a good one at work. Company policy which we sign

upon being accepted with them has a "NO alcohol or drug use" while at work. Company policy also had me traveling with them to the work site. On the way to the site, the driver was always doing a "doobie", I would also see him doing one during coffee break, lunch and then again at the next coffee break. This person also operated a machine which could be deadly if not used properly when hauling in the logs from the cut site. The company had suspicion of him using, and he had caused injury to a couple of others: but could never prove it. We still don't have the "pee test" to cover such actions, and with the Union we have: never will. I, as the First Aid Attendant couldn't do anything until he was hurt ( never was) and then demand the urine sample due to possible underlying injuries. Also at the time, I was the shop steward for the Union and had to defend him in some of the cases. Dilemma: moral, ethical and medical: to which I had to keep my mouth shut.

• The distinction between leadership and management is quite useful in gaining a better understanding of these different functions in an organisation.

• To be a good manager requires leadership skills, and an effective leader will be reliant on applying their own and others' management skills to achieve their vision.
