Conducting ethical research is an essential learning skill promoted through the SACE

The term ‘research’ is used in its broadest sense.It includes:• Formal research• Applied practical or technical investigations• Laboratory inquiries• Investigations• Studies and Projects

Policy Principles

• Research must be conducted honestly and ethically

• Research must have integrity

• Research must give you the opportunity to learn new skills

Conducting research that is honest, ethical and has integrity

respect the dignity and wellbeing of participants, including their welfare, rights, beliefs, perceptions, customs, and cultural heritage.

ensure that research is designed to maximise any benefits to participants and society, and to minimise risks of possible harm or discomfort — psychological, emotional, and physical —to participants.

inform participants of the nature and purpose of the research

obtain voluntary written consent from participants, and consent from participants’ parent or legal guardian.

Respect the right of individuals not to participate in research or to withdraw from research at any time without explanation and without reprisal

protect any personal information that they may acquire

Respect the confidentiality of the individual or groups of people in the conduct of their research.

Use data or test results only for the purpose fro which consent has been obtained, and obtain consent for any publication.

Submit only genuine findings of their research.

Underlying principles

o Referencing is used to acknowledge that an idea (or the exact words) used within a piece of writing is that of another person

o Referencing shows respect for other people’s rightso It avoids plagiarismo It adds intellectual weight to the worko It allows others to follow up the work

GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS

1. Be sensitive to other people’s feelings2. Respect the dignity and worth of all people involved

in your research. Be aware of their age, gender, cultural or language background, disability, or socioeconomic status

3. Make sure that people who give you information understand what your research is about and what you want them to do,. Make sure that people who give you information understand how the information you get from them will be used. Be sure that they are willing to participate

4. Make sure that you get their permission to use the information that you gather

5. Make sure that you gain appropriate permission from your school and parent or legal guardian (if applicable)

6. Keep confidential any personal, identifying information and information that may not have been intended for other people.

7. Use information from the research only for the purpose for which you asked permission

8. Acknowledge other people’s words and ideas

9. Have your research questions approved by your teacher before you start your research

10.Make sure that you feel safe at all times. Do not put yourself at risk. If you have any concerns it may be wise to take an adult with you

11.Check the subject outlines for your subject to make sure that you follow any particular ethical guidelines required for your subject
