    ECO-TECHNOLOGICAL Ethics and

Hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of

the public, the protect ion o f the environmentand the promotion of health and safety within the

    workplace;

(ASTTBC Code of Ethics, Article 1.)

HOW ABOUT THIS? The Declaration of Interdependence

    (COSMOCRATIC)Article 1:

In a technologicalcivilization, the lifeof every person isdependent on amultitude of

properly workingmachines and anequal multitude ofpeople doing a

    multitude of jobscompetently, withhigh productivity.

Article 2: THE PROBLEM:We, the human species, are headed towards atechnological and ecological catastrophe, (callit crunch) that will kill 90% of us and

condemn the rest to nasty, brutish, and shortlives, on an impoverished planet, because ourtechnological society is fundamentally flawed.

    fed, clothed, and

The solar system contains sufficientwealth, in both energyand materials, notonly to solve the techno/ecological crisis,

but heal the damage already done, andmake us ALL well-off. Developing thetechniques of space colonisation will giveus practical ecological knowledge for use

here on Earth. (and working, closed, eco-technological demonstrations, toconvince the sceptical) The effort to openthe High Frontier is non-trivial, but Its not

beyond our means. (Some space colonisationadvocates are convinced that, for less than 10% of the

presentUS military budget, in sustained funding, we couldhave a moon colony in 5 years, our first asteroid mines in

10 years, and orbital solar power satellites in 15 years.)

  • 5/26/2018 Ethics and Sustainable Development(COSMOCRATIC) JULY 2009

    14/45

Article 5: THE SOLUTION IS WORKABLE!Point 1 implies that a successful effort on point 4

will give us the tools and techniques to solvepoint 3. Since technology is interdependent, soare the problems of technology, and successfulsolutions in one field are almost alwaysapplicable in others. So, solving the problems of

space colonisation, particularly the life supportproblem, will teach us to solve criticaltechno/ecological problems on Earth. (AND ANACCESSIBLE RESOURCE STOCKPILE MILLIONS OF TIMESLARGER THAN THAT OF THE VIRGIN, PRE-INDUSTRIAL, EARTH,

PLUS PRACTICALLY LIMITLESS ACESS TO SOLAR ENERGY,CAN PAY FOR THE ECO-TECHNOLOGICAL REVOLUTION THATMUST COME, IF WE ARE TO SURVIVE.)

Article 6: We can only do it if we cooperate.

    Positive sum games (cooperative) do

not waste resources, generate noconflict, and have created all wealthin the history of Humanity.

Negative sum games (self-interested) onlyredistribute wealth, generally destroying some inthe process. (And FEW would describe theresults as equitable.) Also, military implicationsof space travel make space colonies owned by

any single nation an intolerable threat to all theothers, as bombardment down gravity wells is somuch easier than shooting up. Lets sidestep

    that one, shall we?

as the project BUYS AFUTURE for humanity.(The traditionalargument, that spacecolonization is Too

Expensive, can berebutted, comparedto what? The time, andeffort, that humanityputs into war? The fall

Therefore: We will, by our personal actions andconduct, establish a new movement, pledged to fair dealing here on Earth, a

common maximum effort to open thehigh frontier, and pledge to share thefruits of the effort among all humanity.

We name the movement Cosmocracy, because we believe that, without wide

distribution of the wealth of space, therecan be no universal, or even sustainable, democracy, and to the COOPERATIVEstruggle required, as much against ourOWN FOSSILISED THINKING, as againstany external obstacle, WE MUTUALLYPLEDGE TO EACH OTHER OUR LIVES,OUR FORTUNES, AND OUR SACREDHONOUR.

Fevers and fluxes are wasting my mother. Why has the Lord afflicted me?

The Saints are helpless for all I offerSo are the clergy I used to fee.

Henceforward I keep my cash in my coffer,Because the Lord has afflicted me.

We had a kettle: we let it leak:Our not repairing it made it worse.

We havent had any tea for a week. . . .The bottom is out of the Universe!

CONCLUSIONThis was none of the good Lords pleasure,

For the Spirit He breathed in Man is free; But what comes after is measure for measure,

And not a God that afflicteth thee.

As 2012 begins, we learn that Obama has signed the infamous NDAA 2012 bill intolaw, giving himself emergency powers that would make Palpatine and Hitler blushwith shame.
