I make art to communicate.

Making art allows me to be most sincere about who I am. For me, it is the best way to interact with people, society,

and the world, and the most authentic way to identify myself in the context of past, present, and future. My

nature and choice is to work with abstract concepts and ephemeral materials in a variety of media, including film, sound, drawing, sculpture, installation, and performance.

Moment and memory, absorption and evaporation, light and shadow are some of the triggers that inspire me and

relate to my work. My Pyrographs and Aquagraphs are drawings made by fire and water, capturing and

eternalizing the immediacy of a moment, while my installations and time based work are about ever-changing

states of mind.

Born in Tokyo and living in Seattle, I call both places home. While my life is based in America, my spiritual-

seeking and aesthetic sensibilities strongly call to Japan. My artwork and projects are reflections of myself cultivated in

these two distinctively different cultures.

Etsuko Ichikawa is a Tokyo-born, Seattle-based, multi-media artist.

Ichikawa describes her work as “a continuing investigation of what lies between the ephemeral and the eternal.” Her Pyrographs and Aquagraphs are drawings made by fire and water, capturing and eternalizing the immediacy of a moment, while her installations and performance-based work are about ever-evolving states of consciousness.

Ichikawa’s work has been exhibited internationally, including The Ueno Royal Museum in Tokyo, Waterhouse & Dodd in New York City, and Seattle Art Museum. She has received grants from numerous institutions including the Pollock Krasner Foundation, Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and National Endowment for the Arts. Her work has been reviewed in national publications such as Sculpture Magazine, NY Arts Magazine, and GLASS Quarterly.

She is a co-founder of Artists for Japan, a Seattle-base grassroots organization to support the relief efforts of Great East Japan earthquake and aftermath, and a member of NOddIN, a Tokyo-based collective of filmmakers who are paying attention to various social, political, and environmental issues.
