Eucalyptus in Portugal

Introduction•Eucalyptus globulus  commonly know as Blue Gum is the main exotic forest tree species in Portugal. •Eucalyptus  is a native specie from Australia and Tasmania and was introduced in Portugal for over a hundred years (by 1830).•Portugal holds one of the largest areas of exotic Eucalyptus globulus plantations in the world. In Portugal has an area of approximately 647000 ha. 

Eucalyptus characterization (1)

• It is an evergreen, aromatic tree with blue-green leaves and young adult darker leaves and sickle-shaped. 

Eucalyptus characterization (2)

•The eucalyptus roots are shallow and only one of them , the spike (A), penetrates deeper in the soil.

Eucalyptus characterization (3)

• In  favorable  conditions  of soil and climate it can reach between  45  and  60  m height  and  produce  more than  30  m3  of  wood  per hectare per year.

Eucalyptus introduction & expansion in Portugal

• Introduced , initially, with the intention of promoting the drainage of marshy soil.• Fits virtually in all soil types , even the poorest , but their productivity is higher in soils with high content of water.• Expanded by human action in Portugal in the 20th century primarily for use in the pulp industry. 

Distribution of eucalyptus in Portugal

•Prefers coastal and low-lying areas less than 700 m. •Prefers moist temperate climates. • Supports badly shading. •Tolerates all types of soil, with the exception of the limestone. • It is resistant to waterlogging and badly in windy areas.

Uses of eucalyptus

•Production of wood pulp (paper industry).

•Use of flowers by bees for honey production.

•Pharmaceutical use - essential oil (eucalyptol) which has balsamic and antiseptic properties.

Consequences of eucalyptus plantation (1)

• Loss of biodiversity .•Creation of monocultures that can rapidly take over surrounding compatible areas, completely changing the ecosystem.

Consequences of eucalypt plantation (2)

• Loss of habitats for many species.•Changes in the physical and chemical characteristics of the soil (composition, water content, porosity, permeability and compacting).
