Renovate and Celebrate

The newly painted sky blue columns in the Chapel of the Annunciation seem to bring out the amazing colors of the stain glass windows. Gold accentuates the backdrop of the main altar and side niches. The parking lot is paved. The credit for enabling us to accomplish these major projects goes to you. Your monthly sacrificial offerings and pa-tience over the last couple of years allowed us to realize this vision we have of maintaining the beauty of our churches and grounds. So today, during all the Masses, a second collection will be taken for Renovate and Celebrate. After the summer break, the committee will meet with the new pastor to set the goals for our next endeavor. We are grateful for your continued support.

Chil-dren should never go in the water if they don’t know how to swim, and should never swim alone or without a life-guard present. Las familias deben hablar con sus hijos sobre hábitos de seguridad a usarse cuando ellos estén cerca de una alberca o en la playa. Los niños jamás deben ir al agua si no saben nadar, y jamás deben nadar solos o sin un salvavidas presente. Para los padres de fami-lia, es muy importante evitar distracciones cuando supervi-sen niños que estén nadando.

Have you ever given much thought to the people that stand outside Home Depot stores waiting to be hired? What sorts of thoughts go through your mind when you see at them? “What are all these “illegals” doing here, why don’t they just go home?” Or do you think, “Poor people, I hope somebody hires them?” Or “All those “Mexicans”, there goes the neighborhood!” Do you lock the car doors instinctively and become more cautious when you see them? Or, do you see a human being, a man, with the same dignity as yours? Would you give any attention or importance if one of those men started to speak about God? Jesus, in his time, was perhaps closest to these men waiting to be hired rather than the carpenter we think he was. We have to try very hard to not reduce people to our preconceived ideas about them: Black, Hispanic, White, Asian, Jewish, Muslim, Protestant, unemployed, home-less, drunk, drug user, gang member, professional, college educated, smart, ugly, good looking, gay, lesbian, etc. Each of these words is a label that we use, and each one comes with preconceived ideas attached to them. We use these preconceive ideas when we think and speak of oth-ers and in large part determine how we relate and treat them. This is what Jesus is dealing with in today’s gos-pel. People in Jesus’ hometown could not go beyond their labels and preconceived ideas about him. He is Mary’s son, we saw him grow up. Yes, we know him, he was my neighbor. He was a laborer who was often seen waiting to be hired. Matthew even has Jesus telling a parable about people like him (Matt. 20:1-16). He never went to school, how can he possibly know all this? But we are no different from the people of Jesus’ times. We still reduce Jesus to “my” views, labels and preconceived ideas. We put Jesus into nice little boxes and then we proclaim, “This is my God, my Savior.” We hear what we want to hear and see what we want to see. The sad part is that the images, ideas and labels of God that we create may have little to do with the revealed God in Jesus that we find in the gospels. If we see the Jesus of the Gospels with fresh eyes and an open mind we might get scandalized at how radical and revolutionary he truly is. Most people in Je-sus’ time could not even imagine the God that Jesus re-vealed, and neither can we!

¿Qué pasa por tu mente cuando vez a hom-bre enfrente de Home Depot esperando que alguien los contrate? ¿Qué tipo de pensamien-tos pasan por tu mente al verlos? “¿Que hacen todos estos “ilegales aquí, porque no se regre-

san a su país?” O quizás piensas, “Pobre gente, espero que alguien les de trabajo.” O, “¡toda esta gente”, ya se perdió nuestro barrio!” ¿Le pones el seguro instintivamente al co-che y manejas con más cautela cuando los vez? ¿O vez a un ser humano, a un hombre, con la misma dignidad que la tu-ya? ¿Le darías atención o importancia si uno de estos hom-bres empieza a predicar acerca de Dios? Jesús, en su tiempo, quizás se asemeja más a estos hombres esperando ser contra-tados que al carpintero que pensamos que fue. Tenemos que hacer mucha conciencia para no reducir a otros a nuestras ideas preconcebidas de ellos: negro, hispano, blanco, asiático, judío, musulmán, protestante, desempleado, borracho, drogadicto, pandillero, profesional, educado, inte-ligente, feo(a), guapo(a), homosexual, lesbiana, etc. Cada una de estas palabras es una etiqueta que utilizamos, y cada una de ellas viene con sus ideas preconcebidas. Utilizamos estas ideas preconcebidas cuando pensamos y hablamos de otros y en gran parte para relacionarnos y tratarlos a ellos. Esta es la misma problemática con la que Jesús se topa en el evangelio. La gente del pueblo de Jesús no podía ir más allá de las etiquitas e ideas preconcebidas que tenían de él. Es el hijo de María, lo vimos crecer. ¡Claro que lo conocemos, fue nuestro vecino! Era un trabajador como tantos que esperaba ser contratado todos los días. Incluso, Mateo nos da una pa-rábola describiendo a gente como él (Mat. 20:1-16). ¿Nunca fue a la escuela, como puede saber tanto? Pero no somos tan diferentes que la gente del tiempo de Jesús. Hoy en día aun reducimos a Jesús a “mis” imágenes, etiquetas, e ideas pre-concebidas. Metemos a Jesús en cajitas y después declara-mos, “! Este es mi dios, mi salvador!” Escuchamos lo que queremos escuchar y vemos lo que queremos ver. Lo triste de esto es que las imágenes e ideas que creamos de Dios mu-chas veces tienen muy poco que ver con el Dios que Jesús nos revela en los evangelios. Si viéramos a Jesús de los evangelios con una mente abierta y ojos frescos quizás que-daríamos escandalizados de lo radical y revolucionario que verdaderamente es. La gente del tiempo de Jesús ni siquiera podía imaginar al Dios que Jesús revela, ni tampoco noso-tros!

FAITH FORMATION CORNER

We are calling people to live out a vocation! Serving as a catechist is more than simple vol-unteerism. It is more than performing a function. It is more than filling a slot. It is a vocation: a call from God to serve his Church! Perhaps this notion of catechists as having a vocation is new to you. In days gone by, we thought of vocations as pertaining to priests and nuns. While that is true, all people have a vo-cation: a calling to live a life of holiness. Being a catechist is one of them. As a catechist you can use this opportunity to grow in your faith, in your relationship with the Lord, and in holiness. You will not merely be teaching kids, you will be a living symbol of God’s love working through you. You will not be alone, we offer year around training, retreats, and in-service sessions for all parts of the liturgical year and will be there every step of the way. You will become part of our family and develop lifelong friendships with other catechists while you serve the Lord and grow in your faith. Please answer the call…Won’t you say “yes”? Come in, let’s have coffee and chat.

San Gabriel Mission Elementary School Spartans Learning Cooking & Nutrition over Summer

Many of our youngest Spartans are learning about nutrition, healthy lifestyles and just how fun cooking can be. This year our TK teacher, Mrs. Breitschwerdt is teaching some of our younger students the im-portance of a good diet and how necessary it is to balance fruits and vegetables with the occasional sweet treats. Students also learn how to follow a recipe so as to en-courage self-direction, independence and using thinking skills to problem solve. Cooking also inspires children’s curiosity while offering new opportunities to make predictions and observations. Without a doubt by the end of this class our young Spartans will be learning new cooking tech-niques and how to be helpful in the kitchen. GO SPARTANS!

San Gabriel Mission High School has received several donations to help repair the Junior Hallway ceiling tiles. Thank you to the San Ga-briel Women’s Foundation for their donation of $1,500, the San Gabriel Mission Vietnamese Community for a total of $1,900 and an anonymous Alumni dona-tion of $7,600. We are excited to begin the project.
