Whilst a little wet at times it was a really great afternoon with some exceptional performances from our athletes, maximum participation from the students and fabulous inter-house competition. Congratulations to all competitors for giving the event a go and to the winners in each age group. Special thanks to Mr Brinkworth for the organisation of the day and to Mr Robertson for the preparation of the track – it all worked really well! Term 2 Focus Areas Numeracy This term we will continue our focus on numeracy across the school. Our new approach to the teaching of mathematics which involves a greater focus on reasoning, understanding and problem solving is really starting to transform students’ appreciation for maths as a subject, but also their knowledge and understanding of how maths is used and is connected to our everyday living. This new approach encourages a lot more conversation and discussion from students and teachers around multiple ways to solve problems relating to mathematics. Our goal is to make the learning as visible as possible for the students when engaging in mathematics and allow plenty of opportunities for reflection and feedback on the learning occurring in the classroom. Congratulations to our teaching staff and our 3 numeracy coaches for their work in this area - they have certainly made significant progress and I look forward to seeing how this continues throughout the year. Thanks to all parents for ensuring that school is seen as a priority and for ensuring children attend school regularly. Principal’s ReportDear Parent / Caregiver

Thankfully the rainy weather held off long enough last Fridayfor us to complete our school Cross Country. Whilst a little wetat times it was a really great afternoon with some exceptionalperformances from our athletes, maximum participation fromthe students and fabulous inter-house competition.

Congratulations to all competitors for giving the event a goand to the winners in each age group. Special thanks to MrBrinkworth for the organisation of the day and to Mr Robertsonfor the preparation of the track – it all worked really well!

Term 2 Focus Areas

Numeracy

This term we will continue our focus on numeracy across theschool. Congratulations to the new team on being elected to the P&C.I look forward to working with Aaron, Stacey and Kellie alongwith our parent body throughout the 2016 school year toensure that our students receive the best education that wecan provide. I would also like to take the opportunity to publiclythank and acknowledge the work of Chantelle Black ouroutgoing President. Chantelle was a tireless worker andwonderful advocate for Eumundi State School during her 4years as president, and as a school community we thank her forthe time, effort and commitment she has shown to the studentsand families of our school – we wish her all the very best for thefuture.

Facilities

This year the school is looking to refresh its facilities andimprove storage. As such we have recently upgraded thestorage facility below C Block to weather proof the areaunderneath the building and allow for increased storage. Theschool has also painted the Year 1 Adventure Playground andwe are currently looking at maintenance and an upgrade tothe driveway to the Environmental Centre. At this week’s P&CMeeting the subject of air conditioning was also discussed for CBlock. After considering the quotes for completion of this task ithas been decided that the school will use funds from this year’sSpell-a-thon to air condition the building.

Finally this week, congratulations to Year 6 student Dyce onbeing selected to represent the Sunshine Coast region in theupcoming state soccer titles to be held in Stanthorpe in June.Well done to Dyce and we look forward to hearing how theteam performs at the carnival.

NAPLAN Testing

This year NAPLAN testing for students in Years 3 and 5 willtake place on May 10, 11 and 12. The NAPLAN tests aredesigned to assess the skills of Australian students in literacyand numeracy.

The specific purposes are:

All eligible students in Years 3, 5, 7 or Year 9 enrolled atState, Catholic or Independent schools must sit the tests unlessthey are exempt by the school or withdrawn by parents/carers.Parents considering withdrawal (an exemption of theirchildren) from the tests should contact the school byFriday 22 April.

Information for parents about the tests is available on theNAPLAN website.

National Reconciliation Week

As part of our National Reconciliation Week activities, theGoombuckar Indigenous Cultural Bus will be parked atEumundi State School between Monday 23 May and Friday27 May. This is an opportunity for your child to experienceand understand the culture and places of the Kabi Kabi/ GubbiGubbi people of our local area. Each student will have twolearning experiences with this incursion. One is a traditionalstorytelling/educational experience inside the bus and thesecond lesson is a hands on Art activity outside the bus. Irecently had the opportunity to see, first hand, the work of thisinnovative team at the Booin Gari Indigenous Culture Festivaland thoroughly recommend this learning experience. This is anopportunity to build positive relationships and to share in localindigenous culture.

Cost per student is $10. Information went home with childrenthis Monday. Please return completed permission slip andmoney to office.

P & C NewsWe hope you had a wonderful Easter break with your familiesand we welcome new and existing Eumundi families to a coolerterm 2.

Firstly let’s congratulate our New P&C executive team on theirelection on the 15th March.

Aaron Williams – President and Dad to Archie from Year1.Stacey Phillips – Vice President/ Secretary and Mum toMason from Year 5.Jane Revell – Vice President/ Assisstant Ttreasurer, Mumto Eddie from Year 5 and regular Café Volunteer withhusband Matt.Kellie Kruger – Treasurer and Mum to Wil Year 5.

These Volunteer positions enable our P&C to continue itsimportant work in our school community. Ensuring the Café andOSHC operate according to department regulations. Makingsure you are heard on important matters concerning theeducation of our children, creating opportunities for ourcommunity to grow and feel valued, and providing jobs for 12people in our town, all while they continue their own busy familyand business lives. We are truly grateful for these awesomepeople.

On that topic, our P&C executive are relatively new to theirroles and we would like to provide them with opportunities to

get to know you and to be involved in educational mattersof concern. P & C will have their Operations Manager (Karen)and the School Chaplain (Sam) in place by the school hall onParade Monday afternoons for you to have a cuppa and a chatabout all things community. This will be a chance to check outwhat’s on the P&C agenda for their next meeting or add thingsto that agenda if you are unable to attend meetings. You canalso find out about the valuable work Sam our School Chaplainperforms and how she is available to assist your family. Samhas great programs already running. Perhaps you have somenew suggestions.

Speaking of our school family we send a big congratulationsout to Kalina (our OSHC Coordinator) and her partner Jordyon the safe arrival of their son Rocky on 15 March. He wasa whopping 9lb 11oz and left mum in the operating theatre.However both are now doing well and we wish them all the beston this parenthood journey.

Keep a look out on the school Facebook page and Newsmundifor dates to join our afternoon in the park BBQ’s that will occurover the next few months to give the Executive the chance tomeet as many of our families as possible. This will provide aspace to have a chat about our school and what you would liketo see your P&C doing.

Now for our operating news:

Café - has had a great start to the year and is planning a coupleof treat days this term. Look out for our Friday specials hotroast pork or chicken rolls with apple sauce or gravy. We havealso listened to your request that we return to serving hot foodduring both breaks, and have begun to this again. Only our dailyspecials are available for second break.

OSHC - Had a great Easter Vacation care and have fullenrolments for most afternoons. However, there are spacesavailable for mornings if you are in need of this valuable service.

Mother’s Day Stall - Mother’s Day Gifts are all wrapped andwe look forward to our Mother’s day Stall on Friday 06 May inthe Arthouse. Class rosters will be out for teachers to choose asuitable time for the class soon. If you are able to help on thisday we would be very appreciative.

Carpark - Our carpark cost will rise to $6 on 01 July. (Parentsparking for children’s drop off are not charged).

Many thanks to Glen Elmes for his donation of a Webber BBQ,utensils and meat tray for our major raffle this year. Tickets willbe on sale soon.
