JAVEA’S community hasraised thousands tosupport a small school inNairobi, offering a lifelineto children in one of thepoorest areas of Kenya.

Students at the XabiaInternational College(XIC) have been raisingfunds for the HopeRestoration Centre (HRC)for several years sincemusic teacher AbiFletcher became involvedin the project, and arecent non-uniform dayand cake sale saw afurther €338 raised.

HRC is a small schoollocated in Kibera, Nairobi,one of the largest slumsin the world. It is run byPastor Laighdon Agega,and in 2009, Abi Fletcherheard about the schoolafter her friend Helenbecame involved and took

over the fundraising.Between them, withHelen in the UK and Abion the Costa Blanca, theywork to continue theoperations in Nairobi.

Abi said the support byXIC and the communityhas really made adifference to the lives ofthe children at HRC.

“The school is reallyinvolved and the childrenhave taken it in andalways want photos. Theygive me toys to take over

and then want to seephotos of them with theirnew owners at Hope andit is really lovely,” Abiexplained.

Abi has been to Nairobifour times and tries to getover every year tomonitor progress at theschool and see how thepupils are developing.

She said: “Helen and Iare regular visitors toHRC and literally take themoney over with us alongwith donations of clothes,

toys and the children’sfavourite: lollipops! Anyextra money is alwaysspent with us present sothat we can see what it isbeing spent on. It is sonice to see them and seethe difference we aremaking. It is verysatisfying but it can behighly emotional. Thisyear’s trip in April felt verypositive; they had takenon all the tips we gavethem and it really felt likea school.”

Pejac, who blends visual metaphors with just ahint of irony, has been gathering much attentionthanks to his incredible drawings that are Banksy-like in style, yet retain their own identity.

The Santander-born street artist uses abandonedbuildings, footpaths and building facades to highlighthis view of the world. While British street artistBanksy became famous for his graffiti that oftenborders on the political, Pejac’s streetscapes have

been described as more ‘poetic,’ and his work hascropped up in cities such as Istanbul, Paris, Moscowand London.

Comparisons to Banksy are inevitable given thestyle of street art and the urban canvasses thatPejac uses, but his ability to blend his work into theirsurroundings using brushes, pencils, acrylic paintand sandpaper sets his work apart from the mainlystencil-and-spray paint arresting visuals of themysterious guerrilla artist Banksy.

Many expats head home to theirown countries for the Christmasseason, but there is still a hugeamount of us who stay here andenjoy all that Spain has to offer for

the holidays. It might not be as coldand it might be a bit strange to seebars and restaurants open onChristmas Day, but the season herein Spain is every bit as enjoyable asit is back home.

We’re getting into the Christmasspirit here at EWN, and are lookingforward to the build-up to ourfavourite time of year.

HEALTH professionals expressed doubtsabout the environmental impact of the SanJuan crematorium, located near thehospital and medical school.

The regional government backtrackednot long ago on a decision to halt itsactivities as a precautionary measure, afterthe crematorium’s owners produced newstatistics that appeared to put it in theclear.

Meanwhile the Guardia Civil’senvironment protection unit Seprona is

continuing to investigate after San Juanresidents lodged an official complaint.

The hospital’s staff committee called fora halt to the crematorium’s activities andclaimed that it should be relocated to a siteaway from built-up areas where itsemissions would not pose health risks.

The situation was “confusing,”maintained the committee, which brushedaside the owners’ reasoning that the towncentre was 500 metres away. “They did notmention the nearby medical school, the

hospital, the health centreor the Lo Romero schooland the shopping centre,”the committee pointed out.

Health fears overlocal crematorium

ALFAZ DEL PI’S urbanisations recently received theirperiodic municipal check-up.

A significant number of Alfaz residents live onurbanisations, some of them near the town centre andothers that are more distant.

Homeowners were encouraged to take an activeinterest in maintenance and Plan de Limpieza, the townhall’s ongoing cleaning project, explained Alfaz’sMaintenance councillor Juan Carlos Casiano.

“They pass on their needs directly to us and in somecases their complaints as well,” he said.

A 100-STRONG group of archaeologists,geologists, architects and engineersrecently inspected Campello’s L’Illetadels Banyets.

They also visited a similar site in Calpein expeditions organised by Alicante

City’s Archaeological Museum (MARQ).Both were originally used by the

Romans as fish farms or ‘viveros.’ Theywere called baths by later generations,who linked them to the ablutions ofromantic Moorish queens rather than a

money-making Romanindustry.

In Campello the expertsalso saw first-hand thedeteriorating state of thesmall L’Illeta peninsula that isnow badly eroded byconstant waves.

This is affecting the fishtanks carved so long ago fromthe rock, and a breach in oneof them that was discovered in 2012 could eventually resultin its total collapse,archaeologists warned.

The group of experts,summoned from all overSpain, met to discuss thesituation and find a solutionto a problem that couldthreaten the future of theentire L’Illeta site.

Banyets faceerosion threat

SIX wild boar caused amultiple collision whenthey ran onto theAlicante to Madridmotorway.

Five cars wereinvolved as driverscrashed into each otheras they attempted toavoid the animals ofdiffering sizes andages.

All the boar werekilled but none of thedrivers or their

passengers wereinjured in the incident,although some of thecars would needextensive repairs,witnesses said after-wards.

The boar appearedlate at night just beforethe A-31 turn-off for theCV-80, between Saxand Castalla. They arethought to have beenliving undetected nearthe River Vinalopo.

SPANISH visitors outnumbered foreigntourists during the first two weeks ofNovember.

According to hoteliers’ associationHosbec, 54 per cent of Costa Blanca

visitors during the first half of the monthwere Spanish tourists. The remaining 46per cent were foreign.

Overall, average Costa Blancaoccupancy during the first half of

November reached 49.8 percent, three percentage pointsmore than last year and 18percentage points more thanin 2012. It was the CostaBlanca’s best result for thisperiod since 2008, said asatisfied Hosbec.

Alfaz del Pi came out topduring the first fortnight with78.1 per cent occupancy,followed by Finestrat (73.4per cent), the Alicante Southarea (45 per cent) and Calpe(36.6 per cent).

The Lonja opens at11am with ademonstration of atraditional fish auctionat 11.30am.

Food will be servedfrom 12 noon onwards,followed by after-lunchdrinks and music, untilcooking starting oncemore at 6pm.

In addition to the foodthere will be acompetition to see whocooks the best ‘Cruet depeix’ (fish stew).

Conducted tours ofthe port’s fishing boatswill also be available.

Although Xabia al Platis a one-day event therestaurants taking partwill be offering theirspecial menus untilDecember 8.


ALTEA LA VIEJA is organising Spanish lessons forforeign residents.

The course will enable them to learn enoughSpanish to complete paperwork and deal withadministrative matters, explained Altea councillorMarga Riera The classes include practice as well astheory, as the students will visit the town hall,SUMA and banks once a month, she added.

Groups will not be large and the teacher speaksboth English and German, facilitatingcommunication and interaction, Riera pointed out.

The course, which costs €20, is being held atAltea la Vieja’s Centro Cultural from 10am to 1pmeach Thursday and it is still possible to enrol at theForeign Residents’ Office.

For the last 35 years theassociation has assistedyoung people with socialproblems, the elderly, thedisabled and women whosuffer abuse.

Over the last three years,however, its financialproblems have increasedand the British, Norwegianand Dutch foreign

communities amongstothers regularly donatefood and money for Emauscentres in Altea, Benissa,Vergel, Alfaz, Calpe andPolop.

The regional governmenthas not paid theassociation’s monthly grantsince May and workershave not been paid for fivemonths.

A labour conciliating

meeting between 260 ofthe 376 employees andEmaus was recently held inBenidorm to discuss theirunpaid salaries and thesituation was extremelygrave, said the director ofEmaus Francisco Nadal.

Owing to unpaid SocialSecurity contributions,Hacienda is holding€800,000 of Emaus funds.There is also a €120,000debt with the official body,plus a 20 per centsurcharge and interest.

The regional SocialWelfare department isabout to resume payments,Nadal confirmed and theassociation was negotiatingwith Social Security to payoff arrears over the nextfive years once Haciendareleases the seized€800,000. Employees willreceive their July wagesthis week, the director said.

SAN JUAN Council was accused of fencing offprivate property to extend the local sports ground.

The land is his, claimed the owner of adjoiningFinca La Princesa, who lodged a formal complaintwith the Guardia Civil.

San Juan’s Town Planning councillor later told thelocal Spanish press that the land has been town hallproperty since 1983 and was listed as such in theRegistro de la Propiedad and the Catastro recordsoffice as well as the catalogue of municipal assets.

THE owners of a Benidormpub believe that personalinterests lie behind theirfines for excessive noise.

Relatives of AsuncionQuinza, a principal in theautonomous region’sInterior department, are

amongst those who wantthe popular seafront TikiBeach pub closed downaccording to the owners.

They have now filed acomplaint against the twopolice officers who finedTiki Beach last summer. As

members of the Valenciaregion’s Policia Autonomaforce they are answerableto Asuncion Quinza, whoseaunt and uncle live inEdificio Santa Margaritawhere the pub is located,the owners’ lawyers said.

Police inspected the pubwith ‘particular persistence,’they continued, but visitedother pubs and bars on theseafront less frequently.

A year ago Quinza’s auntvoted during a Communityof Residents’ meeting to“redouble efforts” and“take all necessary steps toeradicate the problemscaused by Tiki Beach,” theowners’ lawyers pointedout.

Quinza, they claimed inthe formal complaint to theregional government, hastaken a direct interest infining the pub that goes farbeyond her remit.

BOTH political parties on Villajoyosa Council agreed thatthe Marina Baja hospital needs direct access from the N-332 bypass.

At present drivers must leave the bypass and returnto the old road before reaching the roundabout andturnoff for the hospital. The exit is signposted butdrivers approaching from the Benidorm direction caneasily miss it and must then continue to Villajoyosabefore doubling back.

The local PSOE and PP parties are now supportingHerick Campos, an MP in the national parliament, whois asking the central government to provide €1 million inthe 2015 budget for direct access to the hospital fromthe bypass.

The dog-owner was in a park in Alicante Cityafter releasing her two dogs when theYorkshire terrier bit the child’s leg, inflicting awound that needed medical treatment.

FAMOSA manufacturedtoys for decades in Onil butcould soon leave its lastcentre in the area.

The Famosa factories inOnil and neighbouring Tibiproduced Spain’s best-loved dolls and other toysbut relocated to AlicanteCity in 2012. The move wasprompted by differenceswith the owner of theindustrial sites housing theproduction lines and the

Onil’s mayor Jose RamonFrances has offered tomediate between Famosaand the landlord ManuelRodriguez, the former

owner of another toy firm,Feber.

The situation iscomplicated by confronta-tion between both partiesand the number of officialcomplaints and counter-complaints between bothparties, Frances admitted.Rodriguez has meanwhileinformed the mayor that heis willing to give way “onsome points” and

negotiate.

Twenty-six swimmersaged between eight and 16make up the team that willrepresent Benitachell in theMarina Altea sports

consortium league. Teams from Calpe,

Benissa, Denia, Pego,Ondara and Vergel as wellas Benitachell will swim inthe league competitionswhich started in Ondara.

The Benitachell trainerpraised the enthusiastic

team for making the effortto train throughout theyear. The junior team haddone very well over the lasttwo years, added Sportscouncillor Antonio Colomer,encouraging them andtheir families to carry onthe good work.

A YOUNGSTER who wasinjured after jumping ontothe AVE line next toAlicante’s train station,remains in the burns unit atthe General Hospital, but is

said to be out of danger.The boy suffered an

jumping around urbanareas using obstacles andcity landscapes to performjumps and stunts.

CALLS to the benefit fraud hotline fromSpain have doubled since the BritishGovernment launched a major advertisingcampaign during the last week of October.

The initiative urges the public to call thehotline if they suspect benefit fraud, and toencourage claimants to report changes intheir circumstances. The Department forWork and Pensions’ (DWP) benefit fraudhotline in Spain - 900 55 44 40 - has seena surge in tip-offs which fraud investigatorsare now pursuing to verify if people areclaiming benefits illegally.

Awareness of the campaign andassociated media coverage amongexpatriates in Spain, and their willingnessto call the hotline, is helping investigatorsto reduce the waste of honest taxpayers’money on fraudsters.

Work and Pensions Minister Mark Harpersaid: “Hard-working taxpayers have hadenough of fraudsters taking money whichis meant for genuine claimants, which is

why we’re seeing so many people takingaction by calling the hotline. We know it’s asmall minority who commit benefit fraud,but I would urge anyone who hassuspicions to call the free and confidentialnumber or report them anonymouslyonline.”

Worldwide, someone is reported tobenefit fraud hotlines every minute ofevery working day on average, and in thelast year alone nearly 60,000 fraudinvestigations have been launched.

The UK Government has recoverednearly £1 billion (€1.26 billion) of wronglypaid benefits in the last year, and hasintroduced a raft of measures to crackdown on people who cheat the system,both abroad and in the UK.

The global “Standard forAutomatic Exchange of FinancialAccount Information in Tax Matters”is different from most currentbilateral agreements, whereauthorities have to make formalrequests for information. Now theywill automatically receiveinformation on all their taxpayers

who hold assets in the participatingterritories.

The standard sets out the financialaccount information to beexchanged, including balances,interest, dividends and sales proceedsfrom financial assets. It coversaccounts held by individuals andentities, including trusts andfoundations.

The OECD will establish a peerreview process to ensure that theautomatic exchange of data iseffectively implemented. It isencouraging developing countries tojoin the movement.

The move towards the end offinancial privacy has already had asignificant impact on state coffers, asmore and more people realise there isnowhere left to hide. According tothe OECD, 20 countries have raised$47 billion (€37bn) throughvoluntary disclosure schemes since2009.

WITH the death of the Duchess ofAlba, Spain has lost one of its mostrecognisable figures.

To many who only knew her in her lateryears she was a figure of fun, mainlybecause of her looks - hippyish frizzy hair,sometimes dyed red, a pasty whitecomplexion and her forthright publicpronouncements.

But they forget the greatinfluence she had in heryounger years as the mosttitled, and one of thewealthiest, people in Spain.

“She dressed like GraceKelly in those days,” saidSheelagh Tennent, a ScotsIrish expat who has lived inSpain for most of her life. “I mether in Granada in 1960 at a RedCross function. She was very graceful. Shewas not as beautiful as Grace Kelly, butthat was her look and style. And shecertainly was good looking in her own right.She was very chic, but then she wentrather hippy.

“She was a very nice woman, verynatural and spoke beautiful English. Sheloved bull fighting, Flamenco and Sevilla.”

The Duchess, who died aged 88 lastweek after a bout of pneumonia, was neverout of the society pages of magazines. Shewas the darling of the gossip columns,‘celebrity’ TV shows and newspapers rightup to the end of her eventful life.

Known as Cayetana de Alba, she washugely rich, as well as being Spain’s biggestprivate landowner. The millions she earned

from EU farming subsidies were onecriticism detractors had of her. In Andaluciaparticularly, she was targeted by leftwingers for having vast acreages of ruralland left uncultivated, while farm workerswere left landless.

She had palaces throughout the country,including the Palacio de las Dueñas inSevilla, her main residence, as well as the

the Palacio de Liria in Madrid where shewas born.

Summers were spent at her house inMarbella or another in Ibiza, and she waswell known in local society hotspots like theMarbella Club. There too she was knownfor her grace and charm. “She had time foreveryone and was very gracious, shetreated everyone with respect, no matterwho they were,” said one Marbella societysource.

The Duchess was married three times.Firstly in 1947, to Luis Martínez de Irujo inwhat the French newspaper Libérationcalled “the most expensive wedding in theworld,” with whom she had six children.

He died in 1972 and in 1978 she marriedformer priest Jesus Aguirre who died in2001. Her relationship with Alfonso Diez, acivil servant 24 years her junior sparked along running public argument with three ofher children. “They don’t want me to marrybut they change partners more often thanI do,” she said. She married Diez, whosurvives her as do all her children, in 2011.

A RISING tide of xenophobia isundermining Western European unity.Austerity, the threat of a return torecession, service cutbacks, unemploy-ment and inflation combine to fuel avirulent nationalism tearing at the fabric ofsociety. The first manifestations ofdisquiet are anti-austerity protestssweeping EU capitals and major cities.

I said it first: This week internationalpolicymakers debated if the US dollar andEuro can compete with rival economies.The effect is aggravated by former tradingpartners like Russia opting for alternativesand self-sufficiency.

Finland is now preparing its economy towithstand the collapse of the Euro. One ofeight Baltic states, Finland is not alone in

facing up to the possibility of such achallenge.

Europeans should never be economicmigrants. However, as the Euro-zone slipsback into recession young people face ableak future. The young ponder greenergrass opportunities in faraway countries.

Typically, Estonia has lost 20 per cent ofits population. Not all will stay in Europe.

In doing so newcomers face growinghostility as they enter job markets that canno longer offer employment to their ownnationals. This is where the blue touchpaper of xenophobic up-the-drawbridgesentiment creeps in. Growing resentmentagainst immigration in Britain andGermany is well recognised.

Fuelled by NATO’s anti-Russian rhetoricthere is simmering, anti-Russian senti-ment in the Baltic States. These threenations host large Russian ethniccommunities as England hosts many ofIrish background. Desperate to separatethe EU from Russia in order that itbecomes more reliant on American trade,

the US provokes anti-Russian feeling.EU anti-Russian sanctions are causing a

backlash in Germany, Poland, Spain andFrance. The French economy, alreadyslipping into recession, will face a bill ofnearly €3 billion and the loss of thousandsof shipbuilding jobs if, caving in toAmerican pressure, France fails to honourits shipbuilding obligations to Russia.

In what is now Ukraine, the birthland ofRussia, the Russian language is the mostused. As I write, frontier posts and barbedwire walls are being erected. Imagine thathappening on Northern Ireland or Scottishborders.

If xenophobia rears its ugly head, allEuropeans will suffer. Those who live ingreenhouses shouldn’t throw stones.

On top of these, womenwere particularly worriedabout paying for the futureand repaying back debt.

All this worry is not doingwomen any favours either.The sleepless nights impacton their ability to concentrate,get work done and itnegatively affects theirrelationships.

So why are women morestressed about money thanmen?

Some might say that womenare exposed to more stressfulsituations than men, as they

not only have their ownworking lives, but also tend totake on more responsibilitiesin the home.

Also it’s true that women ingeneral earn less than men,so if they’re employed part-

time for example, they’re lesslikely to have health benefitsand financial resources.

Another theory is thatwomen are more comfortablewith reporting higher levels ofstress.

If you notice that you mightbe one of these womenlacking sleep and stressingover money it’s time to takesome action.

Remember it’s not selfish tolook after yourself, it’snormal; it’s healthy.

And it will make you moreeffective at dealing withresponsibilities at work andhome.

Go for a walk. Stop and sitin the sun for a while. Take arelaxing bath.

Force yourself to take careof yourself.

Also don’t sweep financialconcerns under the carpet tobe dealt with in the future.

Maybe you feel bad orembarrassed about your debt,and that can lead to inaction.But it’s essential to face anddeal with the situation headon.

Q. We are an apartment block of 130 units.Our President was put into power three yearsago with the support of our Administrators. Wehave tried to vote the President out and thisyear we thought we had done it. However,when we received the AGM Minutes, we found

we had lost by 20 votes. This is more votes than owners. This is because the parentcompany of our Administrators owns mostof the parking bays. They have now formed30 parking bays into 30 companies. Theysent their staff to the AGM with proxy votesin favour of the President.

Are your AGM votes counted by thepercentage share (‘quota’) of eachproperty, according to its size, or is eachproperty allotted one vote? Correctly, thevoting should be according to the size ofthe properties, which means the parkingbays would count for little.2. Are these parking bays registered ascompanies? It costs a minimum of €200to register an SL company, which meansan investment of €6,000 for 30 of them.

Finally, where one or two owners hold

several properties, and each propertyhas a vote, it is perfectly possible to havemore votes than owners.

Money worries causing bags under theeyes for women through sleepless nights

MONEY WORRIES: Women are much morebothered about cashflow than men are, andthinking about it causesthem to toss and turn.

Still goingstrongEVERY morning I go to the gymto work out and have my radiowith me.

One station plays oldies 24hours a day, year-round, withno commercials and I happenedto hear Leapy Lee’s tune thismorning, the Little Arrows tune!

Now I know a bit about 50’sand 60’s rock, but had neverheard the tune before and infact I had to look at the displayto see who was doing thatparticular song. I wrote downthe name and then checked onthe internet and it was LeapyLee.

I don’t remember hearing itbefore but that happenssometimes with obscure one-hitwonders!

It’s kind of neat that he didthis tune nearly 50 years agoand it still gets air time, so I justwanted him to know it’s stillbeing played somewhere on theplanet at some time during theday.

Vanishing actI WOULD like to know if anyonehas had the same experiencethat I had.

On November 12 at asupermarket in La Cañada a35cm x 35cm calendar went onthe conveyer belt and throughthe till. It appeared on my billbut never came out at my end.

I went straight to my car andseeing it wasn’t there returnedto the store within 10 minutesto report its absence. It was too

large to slip out of my trolleyand too large and colourful tobe left on the conveyer belt.

Changing times I’VE been in Spain for the last15 years on and off and haveseen many changes and not forthe better!

1. There is a high speedtrain track to nowhere withmillions of euros wasted, plus abronze statue of King Felipe andthe queen outside the town hallin Fuengirola which is now ahotel.

2. People are living withtheir retired mum and dad withsix or eight people in a two-bedroom flat without employ-ment or money, living on dad’spension. That’s wrong!

3. There are people living indoorways like the woman at theBBVA bank in Los Boliches whohas been there for two years.She goes to Santa Fe hostelwhen she gets a few euros andis always clean and sleepssitting upright on a suitcase. Itold Age Concern but nothing

happened. 4. They are driving retired

expats back to the UK withstupid tax laws and will miss allthe UK pensions we spend herewhen we’ve gone.

5. There are too manybeggars, genuine or not, andno wonder all of Europe go tothe UK for benefits. Somethings in the rest of Europe aregood as you can’t get benefitsuntil you pay in for two years.That would stop them all goingto the UK and taking myfamily’s money!

6. People come on holidayfor sun, sand, food andentertainment, starting at 9pmand stopping at 12 midnight.Madrid people buy cheapapartments over existing barsthen get them closed down fornoise! They should not be ableto do this and they should onlycomplain if a bar opens up afterbuying a flat.

7. The town hall wants to sitin ivory towers and look downat locals fishing for sardines andriding donkeys. That is Spain’stwo tier system: the ‘haves’ and‘have nots.’

It’s too earlyI AM old enough to rememberthe old ‘Post early forChristmas’ slogan, although Ibelieve the good old GPO(remember the GPO?) wasthinking of a just a week or soahead of the big day, notmonths.

I very much doubt that theyimagined people would one daybe buying Christmas cards andpresents the momentHalloween was over. Much of itis the fault of shops and chainstores where they put up theirdecorations and sometimestheir prices in mid-November.

They then brainwash andstrong-arm the public intobelieving it is their duty asconsumers to respond.

Spain used to be different inthis respect, staving off thetrappings and feeding frenzyuntil well into December but no,even that’s been taken awayfrom us now.

I enjoy Christmas as much asthe next person but please,please, please: not inNovember.

HAT was mostdefinitely the trip thatwas. Everything thatcould go wrong - did.

Right up to missing my finalconnecting flight fromBarcelona to Mallorca. Not myfault. With an already tightschedule, my flight fromDenmark was delayed for 40minutes, this led to the ol’ boypanting and dripping betweenterminals one and two atBarcelona, where I finallyarrived at the gate at exactlytake-off time. There’s nothingmore frustrating than standingat the gate watching the doorsclose to the plane you shouldbe on. Anyway I did manage tocatch one an hour later (at anextra charge of €120, I may

add). Frankly I can neverfathom the often unbelievablevariance in airline prices.

Sometimes you can travelgreat distances for €30-oddand at other times it can cost afortune for a 45-minute hop.Ah well, what do us minionsknow?

On the brighter side I’vemanaged to pick up a numberof UK bookings for next year.One of the reasons is that mostof the 60s’ lot are actuallydead! Never thought I could bea commercial draw simply forbeing alive - funny ol’ life, innit?

Denmark I found a littledepressing, what with the coldand most of the populaceshrouded in black winter attire.The people are most friendly,however, and I’d like to thankthem for making the ol’ boyfeel thoroughly welcome andcomfortable. By the way, allyou Denmarkians, that orangething which appeared briefly in

the sky on Friday was actuallythe sun. Don’t panic!

One of the most interestingoccurrences for me happenedon the very doorstep where Iwas staying. My girlfriend hadtold me that her upstairsneighbours were Muslims and I

had glimpsed a couple ofshrouded-up ladies passing bythe kitchen window. Lo andbehold the day before I leftthere was a knock at the door.It turned out to be the sametwo ladies standing on thedoorstep holding a... poinsettia.

To my astonishment, andpleasure, I may add, they thenwelcomed me to Denmark and,handing me the plant, wishedme a happy Christmas!

My lady friend told me thatboth the mother and fatherwere employed and their twodaughters attended the localschool. Now that’s what I callintegration. Contrary to what anumber of people think, I amnot a racist and if allimmigrants acted andintegrated in the same way asthis lovely family, I would haveno problems at all.

Unfortunately, as most of usknow, this family is theexception rather than the rule.Nevertheless it was a pleasureto see how peaceful,reasonably-thinking people canactually live together in peaceand harmony. Good to be back!

No sensible player, in thissituation, would under leadan Ace in a suit contract;therefore the Ace must liewith East.

You should play low fromdummy; East will win with J♥and cash A♥. You will nowwin the J♦ return and cleartrumps in three rounds. Youcash two more diamonds,

hoping for a 3 - 3 break, butare disappointed when Westshows out on the third round.

All is not lost, however, asEast holds the extra diamond.You therefore lead your last

diamond from dummy anddiscard a losing club fromyour hand. East wins, but isnow helpless; he must eitherlead away from his clubs, or,if he leads a heart, give you atrump and discard of a losingclub.

Why should you choose thisline of play? Again the clue isin the bidding; it is almostcertain that West holds K♣ inorder to open.

What could have gonewrong if you had played theK♥ at trick one?

An astute West, on seeingthe lead of 3♥, would realisethat a low heart meant thatEast held a heart honour.West could therefore return alow heart to his partner’s10♥, and a club return byEast would set up asubsequent club trick for theopposition to take thecontract one down.

I made a mental note to myselfto be one of the cheerful people

BACK at home after mymastectomy and I was feelingsurprisingly well. I think thatmy overall physical andmental state had a lot to dowith being organised and wellprepared for the hospitalvisit.

You need to free your mindof all worries if possible andallow yourself to relax andyou will find you go throughsurgery and recover verywell. Just knowing that mydear friend Emma was athome looking after mychildren was a huge comfortto me. She had flown overfrom England and cooked andcleaned and nurtured!

She came to visit me everyday in the hospital and eventried to rescue a stray puppyoutside the hospital one day!

Special thanks to her for allher love and the great chemocookery book! It was time toget serious on the food frontand start cooking meals to

boost my immune system inpreparation for chemo-therapy.

The next few weeks werespent pottering about lookingafter myself and my stitches.People were most impressedby my mastectomy bra and‘chicken fillet.’ “You looknormal Erica.” Normal isexactly how I felt! In reality Iwasn’t upset about losing mybreast and at times entirelyforget that I only had one!

It’s amazing how quicklyyou adapt to changes.Reconstruction would be athing for the future, I had toget better first and then Icould think about bikinis!

The district nurse visitedme at my home to checkhow my stitches were doingand was pleased. It was niceof him to come to my houseas I still couldn’t drive andthis way I avoided thegerms of the doctor’swaiting room!

They looked dry and thewound had closed very wellso he removed the stitches.Each little procedure thatliberates your body from thevestiges of an operationfeels like a mini triumph.

Life ticked on as normaldespite still not being ableto drive. I would soon bebehind the wheel againthough. You need to giveyourself 15-20 days after

the operation before drivingbut each person is different.

I started with shortjourneys and made sure I

put my seat belt and thehand brake on with my‘good’ arm.

Just before I could getback behind the wheelMarta, yes yet anotherfriend from England,arrived. It was great to seeher and catch up and we didthe shopping and varioustasks that are more difficultsingle-handed.

She had gone to a lot ofeffort to think of the thingsthat would help me. Forexample, probiotics to boostmy immune system andnaturally an enormousamount of chocolate!

The phone rang and myappointment with theoncologist was confirmedfirst with the radiologist onNovember 13 and then theoncologist for November 19in Malaga.

I went to the Carlos HayaHospital to talk to theradiologist and theyexplained that I would bereceiving chemo first, withthe idea of eradicating anytraces of cancer in mysystem and then radio-therapy a month after theend of the chemo.

The radiotherapy isconcentrated in the area youhave had your tumoursremoved from to try toensure they don’t regrow. Iwas informed radiotherapywould not hurt but my skinwould be very sensitive andthat I would have to usespecial creams.

The sessions would beintensive and daily andcould be up to 20 sessionswith weekends off for a rest.This would be confirmedlater down the line after afull body x-ray and to seewhat shape I was in afterthe chemo in terms ofweight loss and the like.

Now just to wait for myappointment with theoncologist to find out howmany sessions of chemo Iwould have and to ask aboutall the side effects and tocover any doubts I had.

I was very keen to getstarted. Roll on November19 was all I could think.

November 19 and I wentto the ‘Materno’ Hospital in

Malaga for my appointmentwith the oncologist. It was along wait. As I lookedaround the waiting room itstarted to hit home what theside effects of chemo wouldbe. Apart from the obvioussigns like hair loss, I caughtsnippets of conversationsabout many other sideeffects such as nausea.

Some people seemedcheerful and others werevery low indeed. Mentalnote to self; try and be oneof the cheerful people Erica!Then finally I was called in.

The oncologist went overmy operation results,examined me and asked mehow I felt. To be honest Ifelt fine apart from havingheadaches. He decided tosend me for scans for myhead, torso and bones as aprecautionary measure.

This was a positive movebecause if the cancer hadspread to another part of mybody I would rather knowabout it!

My chemotherapy wouldstart very soon and I wastold to come back to thehospital on November 26 forblood tests and dependingon the results I would thenbe given a start date fortreatment.

Not long to go now. Thesooner I started, the soonerI would finish.

Scientists found thatselenium, a naturalantioxidant which is foundin nuts, red meat andseafood, but isparticularly high in Brazilnuts, plays a crucial rolein the early stages ofconception as it helps thedevelopment of healthyovarian follicles, whichare responsible for theproduction of eggs inwomen.

Researchers at theUniversity of Adelaide inAustralia said they haveknown for some time thatselenium is important tomen’s fertility, but no onehad researched its rolewithin healthy reproduc-tion in women.

IN Spain it is estimatedthat between 200,000-300,000 people couldhave problems withalcohol.

However, only eight to10 per cent seektreatment from healthprofessionals.

RUNNING, whilst previously linked to causing problemsin the knees and joints, such as osteoarthritis, couldactually help prevent the disease occurring.

Scientists say a new study has led them to concludethat regular running could be good for your knees anddoes not increase your risk of developing osteoarthritis.

It is the most common joint disease affectingmiddle-aged and older people, and leads to

progressive damage to the joint cartilage. Researchersused data from a multicentre observational study, theOsteoarthritis Initiative. Of the 2,683 participants, 56per cent were female and the average age was 64.5,while the average BMI was 28.6, classified asoverweight. Twenty-nine per cent of those taking partsaid they had run at some time in their lives.

Knee x-rays were assessed for symptoms of thedisease and for those who said they had run at sometime in their lives, 22.8 per cent had symptoms ofosteoarthritis, compared to 29.8 per cent of non-runners.

Gout is more commonin men - there are fourmen to every onewoman who has thedisease - as femalehormone oestrogenappears to exert aprotective effect. Aftermenopause this gendergap decreases to reacha two to one ratiobetween men andwomen.

Dr Perez Ruiz says itis best to seek medicaladvice as soon as anysymptoms occur, and arheumatologist willcarry out blood tests todetermine the level ofsodium urate.

Changing diet, and inextreme casesmedication, can controlthe sodium urate levelsand reduce the chancesof the painful crystalsforming.

SOME 30 years agoexpatriates investing in avilla or old agriculturalproperty in Spain oftenfound they inherited fertilesoil well fertilized naturally,perhaps over centuries, bymules, donkeys, horses,goats, sheep and freerange poultry.

However, this type ofland was soon sold up andby the boom of the 1980’sto 2000’s many villas androws of townhouses werebeing built on overworked,impoverished land whichwould make it difficult todevelop a garden withoutimproving the soil beforeplanting anything.

So what can be done?First let me share some ofthe things we did.

1. One of the men whobuilt the walls around ourplot was a part timeshepherd with a hundredsheep and goats. We askedif we could have a fewsacks of well-rottedmanure. Amazingly he hada heap which he wantedclearing. When we dug thefirst space full it hadobviously been there for agood number of years andwas nice and crumbly withno smell. Over a few dayswe moved six boot loads in

sacks and it was workedinto our first shrub beds.

2. When we started ourvegetable plot wediscovered another heapwhich another shepherdwas about to sell to a majorvegetable grower. Weasked if we could have afew sacks first. He said yesand said he would chargethe equivalent of a euro asack. We immediatelyshook hands on that andwere even more pleasedwhen we discovered it wasfull of thousands of fat redworms.

3. Within 10 years justhalf a flock of the original11 in our valley haddisappeared and it was notpossible to obtain anymanure. However we

found that a localagricultural cooperativesold inexpensive sacks ofdried goat and sheepmanure. Originally this wasthree euros a sack, 10years later the price is fiveeuros a sack and still goodvalue.

4. Now we have a regularsupply of rabbit manurefrom our rabbits grown forcooking ecological paellasplus manure from chickensgrown for the samepurpose.

The chicken droppingsare added to the compostheap or composted in aseparate pile for a year asthey are too strong to usewithout first composting.

5. We have alsoexperimented with growinggreen manures andworking these into the soilas well as using spentmushroom composts.

THERE were 79,561homes sales in the thirdquarter of the year, up1.4 per cent on the

previous three months.It was also the second

best figure in the last sixquarters, with only theJanuary to March total of83,022 being better inthat period.

The statistics from theSpanish PropertyRegistrars show that theupward trend was due toresales which totalled52,127, up 8.93 per centfrom the previousquarter. By contrast salesof new homes fell 10.37per cent in the sameperiod to 27,434.

Leading the way wasAndalucia, with a total of16,006 transactions, withValencia (12,189) nexton the list, thenCatalonia (11,975) andMadrid (10,883).

Increased sales havebeen reflected in astabilisation of priceswith just a 0.08 per cent

fall on the previousquarter, while year-on-year the prices rose 1.15per cent.

The registrars gave thecredit for recent goodfigures to pricereductions averagingmore than 32 per centsince the 2007 peakattracting foreign buyers.Of homes sales, 13.1 percent were to foreignersin the third quarter, anew record for Spain.

Britons accounted for18 per cent of homesbought by foreignbuyers, with the Frenchaccounting for 10.4 percent, Russians 7.5 percent, Germans 6.4 percent, Belgians 6.1 percent, Swedes 6 per centand Italians 4.1 per cent.

In other figures justreleased by the NationalInstitute of Statistics itwould appear that the

quarterly rise was drivenby September’s figures.Sales went up 13 percent in that month and,excluding social housing,there were 24,096 salesregistered, the highestlevel in four years and 14per cent up on a monthlybasis.

In the 12 months tothe end of Septemberthere were 216,682sales, almost identical tothe same period lastyear.

On that basis it lookslike the Spanish housingmarket is no longershrinking, according toMark Stucklin of SpanishProperty Insight.

He pointed out that,looking at the annualisedchange in sales eachmonth, this year clearlyimproved on last year,excluding the first twomonths of the year when

figures were artificiallydistorted by tax changes.

The data also showsthat the differencebetween resales andnewly built propertiescontinues to widen,though sales of bothtypes increased inSeptember, with resalesup 17 per cent and newbuilds up 10.5 per cent.

A breakdown of thefigures on a regionalbasis show that theprovince of Malaga alongwith the Balearic Islandshave seen sales riseclose to 15 per cent thisyear.

The Canaries andAlicante have also beenshowing strong gains.Coastal provinces whereforeigners tend to buyare doing much betterthan provinces in theinterior, which rely moreon local demand.

Rentsdrop butyields rise THE Spanish ConsumerPrice Index (CPI)shows that the averageprice for long termrentals in Spain fell by0.7 per cent in Octobercompared to the samemonth in 2013.

Rental prices havebeen falling for 19months in a row andthe drop is sharperthan the general CPIwhich is down 0.1 percent.

Overall rental priceswent down by 0.1 percent on a monthlybasis, with the monthlyrate for long termrentals falling in 15autonomous regions.Asturias was the onlyregion where it rose, up0.1 per cent, and pricesremained static inCatalonia.

The biggest pricedrops were in Navarra,down 2.3 per cent,Murcia down 2.1 percent, La Rioja down 1.7per cent, Madrid down1.4 per cent, theValencian Communitydown 1.2 per cent andCastilla La Manchadown 0.9 per cent.

Andalucia andExtremadura both sawa 0.8 per cent fall andprices dropped by 0.7per cent in theCanaries, 0.6 per centin Aragon, Cantabria,and Castilla y Leon, 0.4per cent in the BasqueCountry and 0.2 percent in the Balearicsand Galicia.

Despite that, grossrental yields are on anupward trend. Rentsmay have been falling,but property prices upuntil last year fellfaster.
