HE winter fuel allowancedebate rages on amongstexpatriate pensioners. The

news that last year the number ofexpats claiming the Britishallowance whilst living in Spainrose by 44 per cent will furtherinflame the debate.

Those who claim it, see nothingwrong with doing so. After all theyhave paid in all their lives for theirpension, so why should they missout because they live abroad?

But this is a payment to helppeople keep warm in freezingweather more common in the UK,not those living in sunny Spain, goes the argument against.

Leaving aside the fact that manyparts of Spain - and not all that farinland either - do get very chillyindeed in the winter, botharguments miss the point.

That is that NO winter fuel

payment should be made at all, whether here in Spain or back inthe UK. Instead the Britishgovernment should pay people adecent pension. That would meanno one would need an extrapayment.

To argue that one of thewealthiest countries in the worldcannot afford it is disingenuous. There are plenty of other thingsthe government could cut back on.Pensioners deserve better.

THE No Means No campaign waslaunched by the Euro Weekly News(EWN) on August 21; a month later andwe continue to stand and support equalityfor women in Spain and across the globe.

The campaign has been welcomedlocally, and supporters are continuing tosend their photographs in with theirendorsements.

In an exciting turn, men have alsobegun to show support. We have receivedcontact from Magaluf, and as far afield asthe USA. The news of the campaign istrickling out through our coverage in all sixEuro Weekly News editions as well as viaour social media, Facebook, Twitter andnow with new coverage on Instagram.Show your support and send your photomessages to us via Instagram@euro_weekly_news or tweet us yourphotos @euroweeklynews. All the supportwe receive will be shared amongst thewider Euro Weekly News social media andpublications.

EWN were pleased to be invited to theMijas International TV studios bypresenter and producer Karen McMahon, who had heard of the campaign andwanted to be involved by showing hersupport. Karen was intrigued to learn howthe No Means No campaign came about;the controversial speeches made by twoelected officials were of great interest aswas the support the campaign hasreceived. On the day of EWN visiting thestudios, news was breaking of significantleads concerning the double murder oftwo British tourists in Thailand. With theupdates trickling out of Thailand and theworld waiting for answers, the most seniorpolice officer in charge of theinvestigation made a speech on livetelevision. General Prayuth Chan O-Cha, in an extraordinary statement,is reported to have said: “Onlyugly tourists were safe whenwearing bikinis.”

The general’s comments appearedto suggest that his feelings were thatmurdered Hannah was to blame forher own slaying for ‘exposing herselfto the brutal attack’.

On live TV, the general said: “Thereare always problems with tourist

safety. “They think our country is beautifuland safe so they can do whatever theywant. They can wear bikinis and walkeverywhere. Can they be safe in bikinis?…unless they are not beautiful.”

He continued by saying: “British touristsshould not have put themselves in dangerby being out in the early hours.” Hisremarks have caused politicians as well asrape victim supporters to condemn hiscomments as ‘hugely insensitive’.

Why? Because they dressed for theweather? Because they were out whilst onholiday enjoying themselves? Becausethey may have attended bars, clubs, aparty in the late hours and then into theearly hours on the beach area? The verythings the young, middle-aged and olderpeople do whilst on holiday, going out andenjoying themselves, dressing for theirholiday, relaxing on their holiday?According to General Chan O-Cha suchactions may have brought about theirdeaths. Would Hannah or David havewelcomed any confrontation, violence andultimate death? EWN very much doubts

that. NO! Did they

get dressed and go out forthe evening and think, I’dbetter not wear this or that asI may be assaulted, I may bebeaten, I may be killed? EWNvery much doubts that. NO!Does it matter what we wearor what time we are out to,enjoying ourselves? Would theyhave let another, or a group,

take advantage, hurt, beat, sexuallyassault, rape or kill them? EWN very muchdoubts that. NO! Would they have beenlikely to put up a struggle to preventattack, a beating, sexual assault, rape anddeath? EWN would highly think so. YES!

So General Chan O-Cha, does it matterthe time of the day or night, what wewear to go out in or what we drink? Ashuman beings are we not all equal anddoes No Not Mean No?

The words spoken by this senior policeofficer involved in the murder investigationare in EWN’s opinion outrageous. Hearingthe underlying inference of how ‘they mayhave brought it on themselves,’ albeitthose exact words were not used, certainly appears to be General Chan O-Cha’s mindset. No matter what theoccasion or the situation, No Means No.

Responding to a letter printed lastweek, Natali Trujillo has written to expressher support: “In response to DavidCummings’s email: I don’t believe you canput the world’s problems of not honouringand respecting women down to the Bible’steachings and doctrines. Picking out Bible

scriptures and using

them out of context, withoutunderstanding the culture the peoplewere living in, doesn’t give you a fullmeaning of what they are trying to say.Nowhere in the verses you pointed out didit mention anything about allowing men tobadly treat women, rather, it talks aboutstructure and respect. If men, in the past,or even at present, have taken scriptureout of context and made them to pleasetheir own desires, it cannot be blamed onthe Bible or Christianity, but it can only beput down to men’s machismo. In thetimes of Jesus, there was a socialdifference between men and women.Women where even looked down on yes.But is this down to the Bible (believingthat it is the Word of God and not of man)or down to man changing teachings fortheir own purposes? Check Galatians3:28.

“Along came a man, for many, not justany man but the One the Bible calls theSon of God, Jesus Christ. He was arevolutionary; He did things differentlyand out of the box. In a society where itwas seen wrong to do certain things,Jesus, being a rabbi, spoke to prostitutes, spoke with women that weren’t Jews, Heate with women and had same levelconversations with both men and women.Jesus broke with the structures that menhad established, and through this He waslooked down on by the Pharisees, thereligious leaders of the time.

“Can you really say that God does notlove women? Jesus Christ, Son of God,God Himself, brought back equality

between men and women. He died onthe cross both for men and womenfor their redemption of sin (as the

Bible teaches). I have not yetcome to know any greater lovethan this.” Natali Trujillo(location not known) Rec:September 19, 2014

Beggars thatmake townlook rundownI HAVE been in Torre del Marsince February. In that timethere have always been 12 ormore beggars about, mostlyalong a small section of the N-340 main road, while others areoutside supermarkets.

Most are long-stay, somecome and go. Of the long-stay,the majority seem to be fairlyyoung and Spanish and they areout six or seven days a week, soobviously they are not lookingfor work.

Many are quite well-dressedand some have the inevitabledog with them. One with a fold-up chair that he brings with himsettles down with a book andwaits for the money to roll in.

A man in a wheelchair hasappeared recently but at timeshe moves his legs about (cramp,I suppose) and no cripple canmove like that.

I have seen a few deservingcases looking as though theyhave slept rough, but they arethere for a few days and go. Therest just seem to be deadbeatswho don’t want to work. Can’tthe police do something aboutthem, as these beggars makethe town look rundown?

it has been suggested by thehead teacher that she attend a‘special school’ in Alicante thatcan deal with her needsaccordingly. A nurse in theschool would make a hugedifference to both our lives.

Rights or wrongsI DO not agree with the commentsof Antonie Holtzhausen. I thinkthe actions of the parents werefoolhardy, ill thought-out andposed a risk to Ashya.

The consultant atSouthampton Hospital hadoffered the family a secondopinion and access to treatmentabroad.

The boy’s scans and notescould have been emailed toPrague and an opinion soughtas to the suitability of protontreatment while Ashya wascared for in hospital.

Instead his father chose totake the family on a long trek tosell his Spanish apartment toraise funds. In the currentclimate this could have takenmonths.

What could have happened toAshya and the other children inthe meantime? This sale couldhave been arranged from theUK, or the father could havegone to Spain on his own.

It all went horribly wrong andthe UK police had no choice butto take the action they did.

No doubt there will beinterviews on morning TV,articles and books etc. I hopethe proceeds are given tochildren’s cancer charities.

The most important thing is

that Ashya gets the correcttreatment, but in my opinionthere were better ways ofachieving this.

Lock it awayI WAS interested in a EuroWeekly News article describingthe intention to introduceparking charges and fines toTorre Del Mar and Velez-Malaga.

It seems to me that thesemeasures will restrict tourismrather than encourage it, butwill presumably provide aready revenue stream.

Will tourists favourdestinations without parkingcharges and will this affect cafesand shop keepers, for instance?

Far better in my view forcouncils to make money byproviding an improved beachexperience.

I had the notion of ‘beachlockers’ and looking on Googlefound that Bournemouth hasbeen offering beach lockers inthe UK since 2006.

These provide space forvisitors to store valuables whilstthey enjoy the beach for £3 perday. A small price to pay to keepyour smart phone and walletsafe!

I calculate that thesewould provide roughly €1 millionper year, if introduced in theCostal del Sol alone.

Health proposalWITH large urbanisations nearPunta Prima and the Torreviejahospital and an agingpopulation, a second healthcentre will soon be needed.

At the back of the hospitalthere is another car park that isunderused. Would this not bethe ideal place for anothercentre as the Health departmentmust already own the land?

Savings could be made usingmodern materials such asplastic-faced polystyrene panelsin place of wood, which wouldbe more hygienic.

The downside would be thesalaries of doctors, nurses andstaff.

ALTHOUGH Spain wasseverely affected by the2008 crash and its real-estate market took aserious blow, the countryappears to be gettingback on its feet.

According to data fromthe Royal Institute ofChartered Accountants(RICS), foreign propertyinvestors are showingrenewed interest in thecountry that has long beenthe preferred retirementand holiday destination ofhundreds of thousands ofGermans, Britons andFrench and Dutchnationals.

There is now evidence ofan improvement in thereal-estate markets of an

ever-growing number ofEuropean countries, saidRICS’s chief economistSimon Rubinsohn. “Ourlatest test results also showevidence of an upswing inoccupier demand which is

ultimately key to asustainable recovery acrossthe continent. The resultsfor Spain, Portugal andIreland are particularlyencouraging and broadlyconsistent with the

strengthening macronewsflow these countrieshave delivered in recentquarters,” said Rubinsohn.

No other crisis-affectedcountry in Europe iswitnessing such a fast-

growing increase inproperty demand thanSpain, according to RICS.In fact, for the first time inseveral years there hasbeen a slight drop inunemployment and a bigjump in the constructionof residential properties.

This changing trend canbe partly attributed to theunder-performance of theChinese market in the lastfew years.

Chinese investors areturning their eyes toalternative invest-menttargets and Spain fits thebill because of its strong

opportunities for growth.Furthermore, figures

from last year show thereal-estate marketcontributed approxi-mately 10 per cent of thecountry’s gross domesticproduct, which in turnhas had a significanteffect on Spain’s well-being.

Spain well on the way to recovery FAST-GROWING: Theincrease in propertydemand in Spain.

SPAIN’S football clubs allegedly owemore tax than they admit.

Instead of the €482 million that theLiga Profesional de Futbol (LPF)acknowledged at the end of lastseason, clubs owed €564 million, maintained Spain’s tax collectingauthority.

Neither did they cut their tax debt by€165 million as the LPF claimed,

Hacienda continued. Last season’s truefigure stands at just €99 million andrepresents a 15 per cent reductioninstead of the claimed 25 per cent,Hacienda argued.

Possibly hoping to underline theclubs’ subsequent efforts, the LPF gaveinexact figures for the precedingseason, the tax authority continued.

Determined to obtain its dues,

Hacienda is scrutinising andimpounding any relevant sums ofmoney that the clubs obtain viagate-money, television rights andadvertising deals.

Reductions in the clubs’ debtscorresponds to Hacienda vigilance, administration sources claimed, not self-control on their part orthat of the LPF.

The taxman lurks in the stands

IT’S no news flash thatthe Spanish spoil theirkids and a new surveyhas just confirmed it.

According to research, which looked at theaverage amount ofpocket money childrenreceive across Europe,it’s been revealed thatkids in Spain are not leftshort. Spanish kids arethe third-best paidyoungsters in the EU(after Italy and France),with those aged betweenfive to 15 receiving €5 to€10 a week.

Almost 50 per cent ofparents in this countrysaid that they don’t givetheir kids any pocket

money atall and that if theirchild needs something, then they simply discussthe purchase and buy itfor their child ifnecessary. Therefore, almost half of youngSpanish children don’thandle money.

The other 50 per centof parents, however, whodo give money to theirchildren, said that theirmain reason for doing sois to ensure their kidslearn to respect andvalue money. Almost 85per cent of those parentsstudied also admittedthat since giving pocketmoney to their children

they havenoticed that theirkids have quickly learnedhow to be responsiblewith money, through theprocess of trial and error.

Many children whoregularly receive pocket

money are also noted tosave a significant portionof their allowance, which

is great practice andhabit building for thefuture.

In general, if parentscan afford it, giving kidsregular pocket money isa great way to developtheir independence andgoal setting. For exampleif a child wants a newvideo game console, then they can learn howto save to buy it. A childwill see that it takes timeto build up savings andwill hopefully develop asense of responsibilityregarding the concept ofmoney.

It’s a good idea toprovide two jars forchildren when you givethem pocket money: onefor spending and one forsaving. This way theycan choose how theydistribute their pocketmoney between the jars.

This also gives you achance to teach yourkids about money and itsuse.

Q. It was with great concern that Iread a reader’s letter from a woman inCarboneras, published in your August28 edition. She apparently had to paya large medical bill despite having allthe documentation to entitle her to

use the Spanish health system. Being a pensioner and not in good health,I am worried about my ownposition. Could you look into thisfurther?

You and theLaw in SpainBy David Searl

Worried over medical bills?

A. If you are a UK pensioner, receiving the state old age pension, you have the right to NHS medicaltreatment in the UK. If you become anofficial resident of Spain, with theCertificate of Residency, you have theright to transfer your medical treatmentto the Spanish healthcare system. Youapply to the Spanish Social Securityoffice in your autonomous region, suchas Valencia or Andalucia. They will thenissue you the Spanish Social Securitycard which entitles you to treatmentand they will assign you to a localfamily doctor. Each of the regionsadministrates health care in its territorybut your card is valid in all of Spain.

The process is not automatic. You mustapply for it.

BUSINESS EXTRA

IT is inevitable that from time to timethere will be disagreements withcustomers. The customer is not alwaysright. Some do abuse the hypothesis thatthe customer is king.

However, most disagreementsbetween service provider and customerare due to avoidable misunderstandings.Customer conflict can be reduced to aminimum simply by explaining preciselywhat he is going to get for his financialoutlay. Honesty is the best policy. Nevergive a delivery time you cannot meet. The important thing is to explain, understand, get it in writing.

Often the fault lies with the customer. In an effort to keep prices down, theclient withholds information when askingfor a price. The client dislikes the billbeing added to but is happy to increasehis expectations of what is to be done.

An example of this was when my wife, who translates menus to Russian, was

asked the fee for an a la carte menutranslation. Such menus can be one pageor multiple pages. When asked for anattached copy the client failed torespond.

One wonders how the eatery’s ownerwould react had a client sat down, dismissed the offer of a menu and asked:“How much for a three-course meal?”

Never price over the phone orinternet. If the client is vague there is acatch. Far better to see beforehandprecisely what needs doing and the timeto complete.

Listen carefully to your customerswants. Understand and repeat them, reassure and take notes. Having put inwriting a synopsis of the work to becarried out, and if possible a pricebreakdown, sign and leave it. Whendoing so explain the costs or stages atwhich second thoughts or exit can bemet.

A no nonsense business approach fromthe outset will weed out time wasters. Itwill compensate by reassuring genuineenquirers that your business isprofessional in its approach.

It sounds tedious, but far more tediousis a disgruntled client who, apart fromlater challenging you, could likely destroyyour business with gossip.

ELIGHTED with theoutcome of theScottish referen-dum saga.

Of course, if you removedthe natural English haters -those who, were they bornsouth of the border, would stillhate the citizens of Rome, andalso, despite his PR denials, southern despiser AndyMurray, plus the children, whowent to the polls with no moreincentive than the memory ofMel Gibson bellowing ‘freedom’as he expired in Braveheart -then I think you’d probably belooking at more of a 70/30 percent result in favour of theno’s.

Together again. Sounds likethe title to a song, and a verypleasant song at that. Thankthe Lord I won’t have to boothe Scottish team when itmakes the next World Cup,(unless you’re playing theEnglish of course!).

Still, consider those of theMuslim fraternity who considerthemselves above Britishauthority and live under Sharialaw, an utter disgrace. One ofthe biggest craw stickers to meis the four (plus one reserve)wives they are allowed underthis illegal UK organisation.

Apparently there are some20,000 of these ‘arrangements’now existing. To be honest, Ihave always found one wifemore than enough and frankly,to my mind, they can all get onwith it. But it doesn’t end theredoes it? Because British lawonly allows a single spouse, they can only claim familyallowance for one. So what dothey do? Simple, theyimpregnate the other threeand claim for them on thesocial as unmarried mothers.

It’s fraud, pure and simple.Multiply that little touch by

20,000 and it comes to some80,000 claimants plusoffspring, living off the Britishtaxpayer (I didn’t include thehusband in these figures, because I assume he goes outto work.) It’s all a Nationalfarce, but then, only one in anever increasing line of

disgusting unfair practicesthrust on to the beleagueredBritish public by incompetentgutless politicians intent onpresenting the UK to foreignerson a plate of gold - our gold!

After all that down time I’llfinish on a high note (hurrah).I found these in my favourite

news sheet last week. Here’s acouple of nonsense trivia factsto hopefully brighten your day.

Did you know that: All thechickens’ eggs produced in theworld would make an omelettethe size of Northern Ireland?

There are a billion dogs inthe world (most of them inSpain!). The least common pinnumber is 8068? (not anymore!). The Royal Navy blastsout Britney Spears ‘Oops I’vedone it again’ to scare offSomali pirates. And the mostdifficult tongue twister inEnglish is ‘Pad kid poured curdpulled cod.’ Oh, and as a finalgem, if you borrowed £400from Wonga at its standardrate for seven years, youwould owe more than Britain’snational debt!

Keep the faith.Love [email protected]

Or take a recent study of1,000 workers and 1,000bosses commissioned by amutual healthcare provider. ‘I’min A&E and got a clothes pegstuck on my tongue’, ‘I’ve got asore finger’ and ‘I’ve injuredmyself during sex’ are amongthose that made the list as did:‘My dog has had a fright and Idon’t want to leave him’ and‘my trousers split on the way towork.’

As regards trouser-splitting,this actually happened to acolleague as he got out of thecar in the company car park. R-r-r--i-i-p! Fortunately, fiveminutes in the gents with astapler repaired them wellenough to get him through theday, although he had to be

really careful sitting down...According to the healthcare

provider: ‘In a tough economy, managing sickness absencebecomes vital for businesses. But employers are clearlysuspicious about days taken offfor illness ... This is not helped

by the fact that for more than afifth of the sick days taken, workers admitted they couldhave actually made it into work.High levels of sickness absencecan have a huge negativeimpact on businesses - bothfrom a financial perspective and

on the effect it has on staff whobear the extra workload.”

Although many find thissubject amusing, it’s actually amajor cost to employers. Theworst offenders, reportedly, arethose in the public sector whotake significantly more days offeach year than those in theprivate sector - at massive costto the taxpayer. Quite simply, ifthey took the same averagenumber of days off sick asthose in the private sector, it’sestimated it would save around£2.5 billion (€3.18 billion) in theUK every year.

WORST EXCUSE: For not turning up to work.

Page 52: Euro Weekly News - Mallorca 25 September - 1 October 2014 Issue 1525

HEWING the fat at arestaurant table I surmisedthat the US will cease being apower of consequence by

2020.The European Union, the economy and

foreign policy of which is largely directedby Wall Street and Washington, will finditself isolated and in a permanent state of1980s era discord and austerity.

I withered under my friend’s scorn buthardly alone in my forecast. Fast-movingglobal politics is to me a fascinating game;watch this space.

The petrodollar is history; time isrunning out for the US now reeling undera $17 trillion debt. Added to by $2.38billion each day it is predicted to be at anunsustainable Weimar $26 trillion by 2020.

Ensnared by Wall Street / WashingtonDC policies, Western Europeans now findourselves in a 1914 hotbed of red lines, propaganda, aggression and economicwarfare. We despair of our political elite. We know our system has failed but are

clueless as to what can be done to recovergovernance from the failing self-servingelite.

The European Union has uncomfortablesimilarities with pre-Perestroika era of thecollapsing Soviet Union. It is fundamentallycontrolled by 27 unelected commissionersand two unelected Presidents; the rest istheatre for sheeple.

Komsomol Pravda, a popular tabloidread by Russians living in Spain: “The EUin the worst sense of the word is verymuch the new USSR.” Mikhail Gorbachev:“Why is the EU trying to recreate theUSSR?”

This last President of theUSSR introduced Perestroika(reform) so radical it broughtabout penury to hundredsof millions of Russiansand Eastern Europeans.Circumstance will bringsimilar change to the28 EU nations.

The Euroand

petrodollar, undermined by competingcurrencies and bank-free barter; lifesavings, national assets and economieswill be stripped by a failing economy

Will we be saved by our own PresidentPutin? On assuming

office in 2000 thepopular Russianpresident turnedoligarchs intofugitives, nationalised thebanks, exiled

the

West’s rapacious conglomerates, anddiverted Russian resources to Russia’sneeds. As a consequence the Russianeconomy bounced back. This is what liesbehind the current stand-off.

The EU is now a perestroika era USSR.So, who do we vote for? First must comethe realisation that sheep-like voting forrotating dictatorships keeps the corruptpolitical elite in place.

It is not politicians who need replacingbut the system of governance. An end topolitical parties; election by publicreferendum of constituency candidateswith a track record in service to thecommunity and experience, who, every12 months must explain their previousyear’s achievements. An end to conflict ofinterest; no public official, their families orconnections, to benefit from extra rewardduring or after office.

Such change will anyway be thrustupon us by BRICS and other trade blocswith which an isolated Europe cannothope to compete without painfulperestroika. Otherwise, the EuropeanUnion, cut off from its sinking Americanmother ship, will become a StalinistEurope.

OPINION & COMMENTEWN 25 September - 1 October 2014 / Mallorca www.euroweeklynews.com52

EDRO SANCHEZ, thePSOE’s new secretarygeneral said he will not

pact with populist Podemos. The party born of the 11-M

movement in 2011 andincubated by its leader PabloIglesias’s television programmewon five seats in the Europeanelections.

Podemos is likely to run offwith many council seats in themunicipal elections, so Sanchezis not helping himself or thePSOE by ruling out a votingalliance.

On the other hand, he couldbe doing everyone else afavour. Iglesias scarily promisesto default on Spain’s publicdebt or take over the EuropeanCentral Bank if he is ever inpower. It would win votes butensure that not a cent or apenny ever enters the countryagain.

Poetic justiceMIGUEL ARIAS CAÑETE, whoheaded the PP’s Europeanelections, received the Energyand Climate Actioncommission when EU goodieswere doled out recently.

Arias Cañete, it will beremembered, explained after

a television debate with thePSOE’s principal Europeancandidate Elena Valencianothat he went easy on her. Hedidn’t want to be accused ofchauvinism by displaying hisintellectual superiority, hesaid.

In his new role ascommissioner he will be

answerable to three women.A female would call it poeticjustice although Arias Cañete’sfeelings on the subject - ortheirs - have not beenrevealed.

Simple arithmeticTHE manner in which Spain’spresident Mariano Rajoy isgoing about voting reform hasnot endeared him toOpposition parties. They knowthat the PP’s huge majoritycan push anything it wantsthrough parliament, butsimple arithmetic should showthem that Rajoy isn’t so wrongabout local elections.

The control of town hallswould go to the most-votedparty with at least 40 per centof the vote and 5 per centmore than its closest rival. Aneck-and-neck result would goto a second-round vote.

Local politics are a hotbed ofunrest, intrigue and unholyalliances and this would coolthings down.

PIF the Constitutional Tribunal rulesthat the November 9 ballot onCatalan independence is illegal,Artur Mas could call early elections.

Cataluña’s regional presidentwould probably prefer not to dothis since CiU, the coalition partythat he leads, lost its overallmajority after early elections in2012.

Mas is in power thanks to theparliamentary support of ERC, aleftwing republican nationalistparty whose leader Oriol Junquerasis urging civil disobedience and aNovember 9 ballot come whatmay. Junqueras has now offeredto enter Mas’s government toensure the vote goes ahead butMas, offered a present he does notwant, is keeping his hands behindhis back.

Voters would ask themselveswhat they had voted for: demurecentre-right CiU - conservative witha lower-case ‘c’ - or bold bruiserERC, with whom they coincide onlyon the subject of nationalism.

LIBRA(September 24 - October 23)Some legal matters need your attention. That's not really what you want at this timeof the year. A decision has to be made and itneeds a fine balance. Asking others may justconfuse matters, so only seek expert advice.

SCORPIO(October 24 - November 22)A last-minute invitation turns out to be justthe ticket in more ways than one. Aninvitation to join a holiday may be proffered. This is unusual, certainly, but keep an open mind.Your company is clearly well appreciated so whynot make that a point of pride?

SAGITTARIUS(November 23 - December 21)Someone you mistrust offers to add toyour celebrations. Why not call a truce? We both know that little long term will come outof it, but who cares? Sometimes, it is better toshare one good moment with someone thannone at all.

CAPRICORN(December 22 - January 20)As you are very much in the limelight, itcomes as no great surprise thatadmiration comes your way. What maysurprise you, however, is the direction it comesfrom. Who would have thought that such asituation would arise? Strange things happensometimes.

AQUARIUS(January 21 - February 19)There is a wonderful enthusiasmabout you at the moment. Seeing thereaction of others to you, it occurs that youshould have taken this attitude before. Therefore, make a resolution to put more energy intoeverything that you do. The rewards are bothsocial and financial.

PISCES(February 20 - March 20)Something new which you started inrecent weeks becomes more than apassing interest. Although it may be surprising toyou, it is owing to a predictable situation. Inopening your mind, you also seem to haveopened your heart. Many people do that at thistime of the year and so you are not alone.

ARIES(March 21 - April 20)Being totally inspired this week, youcould be tempted to let enthusiasm runaway with you. It is a lovely feeling, likebeing a child again. Be sure to have fun, but dokeep as much money in your pocket as possible.

TAURUS(April 21 - May 21)There will be a certain amount ofdiscussion regarding holiday plans. Youknow what you want but how do youpersuade others? It's quite easy really.

GEMINI (May 22 - June 21)You are so sharp that there is adanger you will cut yourself! Seriously,

though, try not to appearpompous over a certain matter. Youmay be right and you may be clever, but smarty pants are rarely popular.

CANCER(June 22 - July 23)With everyone busy roundyou, the chance may betaken to show what you arecapable of. Instead of watchingsomeone make a pig's ear of a workproject, offer to help.

LEO(July 24 - August 23)A business partnershiptakes on a romantic tingethis week. It is possible thatthe other party sees this as moresignificant than you. To avoid problemslater it would be best to let them do allthe running.

VIRGO(August 24 - September23)Your outgoing attitude is spoton. Some may say you are a littlecrazy, the way you go for things. Eachperson has their own way and yourscan be quite unique but that certainlydoes not make it wrong. People whomake the world around us that little bitmore colourful are gems.

D-Day 1944: the largest invasionforce in history successfullylanded on the shores of

Normandy to end the Nazi dominationof Europe.

But without the contribution of a self-made, Spanish double agent, theoutcome of the Second World Warmight have been different.

Juan Pujol Garcia was born inBarcelona in 1912. He first experiencedconflict during the Spanish Civil Warjoining the Republican cause. RejectingCommunism, he defected to theNationalists during the battle for theEbro in 1938.

However, he lost faith with the Fascistregime and ended the war in prison. Hewas proud to have fought for both sideswithout firing a shot and at the outbreakof the Second World War with Spainneutral, decided to help the Allies.

He walked into the British Embassy inMadrid offering his services but wasturned down. Not deterred, he conjuredup the idea of becoming a Germanagent. Impressed by a fascist Spaniardwith a diplomatic passport, able totravel to and from the UK, the Germanintelligence service in Madrid jumped atthe opportunity to use his services.Freidrich Knappe-Ratey, the Germanintelligence officer, gave him arudimentary course in spying withcode-books, invisible ink, etc, expenses, a code-name – Arabel – andinstructed him to go to London andrecruit a network of spies.

The truth was that Juan Pujol was nofascist, carried a false diplomaticpassport, had never been to Englandand spoke no English. He establishedhimself in Lisbon and at the publiclibrary, from maps, tourist guides, timetables and cinema newsreels, learnt as much as he could aboutEngland. He started to feed the Madridembassy with all manner ofinformation, most of it factual butirrelevant.

Having managed to break theGerman Enigma cipher machine, the

code-breakers at Bletchley Park becameintrigued by a mass of false reportsbeing passed to the Germans. Oneabout a non-existent convoy en route tothe Mediterranean led them to trackdown the mysterious person sendingthis data. Pujol was eventually locatedin Lisbon and this time he was notturned down.

He travelled to London, where, giventhe code-name Garbo, after the actress,he began to work with Tomas Harris, aSpanish-speaking British intelligenceofficer. Together they sent hundreds ofletters to a post office box in Lisbonwhere the Germans were overjoyed athaving such a reliable spy in England.

And it was not just one spy. Pujol hadestablished a network of spies scatteredacross the country, only they neverexisted. To ensure credibility themessages sent were a mix of correctbut unimportant data and occasionallyimportant military details which weredeliberately delayed and sent too latefor the Germans to act. With hisimaginary network of spies, Pujol couldalways blame one of his operators fordelays or errors.

The Germans were so impressed thatPujol was provided with the latest code-ciphering devices, which were gratefullypassed on to Bletchley Park.

At the beginning of 1944, theGermans needed Arabel - Pujol - to givethem whatever information he could

about the invasion they believed wasbeing planned. Meanwhile ‘OperationFortitude’, the code-name for the planto deceive the German High Command, was already in operation and Pujolplayed a major role in convincing themthat the invasion would take place inthe Dover Strait, the shortest channelcrossing. He and Harris were sending astream of radio and written messages

giving the Germans details about thearmy being massed in Kent.

As part of the deception plan, realisticdummy inflatable tanks, artillery, jeeps, landing craft and armoured cars hadbeen made and scattered across thecountryside throughout SoutheastEngland. German reconnaissanceplanes would detect a vast array ofmilitary equipment near Dover. To addto the deception the Allies arranged forGeneral Patton, known to the Germans

as a key military figure, to tour theregion.

To ensure that the Germans wouldnot realise they were being duped, messages were sent warning of theNormandy invasion but told that it wasa diversion with the real invasion takingplace in July or August. Hitler wasconvinced and despite GeneralRommel’s opposition, ordered that themajor armoured divisions and troops besent to the Pas de Calais where theyremained for two months after the June6 landings, allowing the invasion tosucceed.

After the war, concerned for hissafety, Pujol faked his own death inAfrica before moving to Venezuela, where he opened a bookshop inCaracas and having divorced his firstwife, remarried and had three children.

Pujol’s vital role in the success of theD-Day landings was recognised and inNovember 1944 he received an MBEfrom King George VI. Six months earlierhe had been awarded the Iron Cross forhis services to the Reich, still convincedof his loyalty. He is believed to be theonly person to have been awardedmedals by both the Germans and theBritish.

Four years prior to his death inVenezuela in 1988, Pujol journeyed toFrance on June 6, 1984, to visit theNormandy beaches and cemeteries topay his respects to the fallen.

SLEEP: One of the mostimportant habits.

AS half of Britons say they often feeltired, sales of sports and energy drinkshave surpassed £1.5 billion (€1.9billion).

New research from market researchcompany Mintel reveals that half (54per cent) of Brits claim to often feeltired, rising to six in 10 (60 per cent)women. In line with this, throughoutthe downturn the sports and energydrinks market saw steady growth risingfrom £1 billion (€1.27 billion) in 2009 toan estimated £1.5 billion in 2014.

Today, three-quarters (75 per cent) of

Brits say they are more fun to bearound when they’re feeling energetic(rising to 82 per cent of women) and 64per cent say they get irritated easilywhen they’re tired (rising to 75 per centof women). Further to this, it seemsthat many have been looking to fighttheir fatigue with sports and energydrinks as 61 per cent of Britons havedrunk a sports drink and 46 per cent anenergy drink in the past year.

However, despite its relatively highpenetration, the sports drink market isdeclining, with sales of this drink down

from 173 million litres in 2011 to apredicted 156 million litres in 2014,falling in value terms by 15 per centfrom £236 million (€300 million) to £218million (€277 million) over the sameperiod. This comes despite sales ofenergy drinks rising from 454 millionlitres to an estimated 550 millionbetween 2011 and 2014.

Sales are expected to rise to 647million litres in 2019, compared to thesports drink sector, which is expected tosink to 115 million litres.

David Zhang, Research Analyst at

Mintel, said: “The growth of the sportsand energy drinks market has sloweddramatically over the past couple ofyears since peaking in 2011, due to theailing sports drink market. The declinein sales of sports drinks at a time whensports participation is rising highlightsthat consumers are opting for othersources of hydration when undertakingsports. With strong overlap betweenusers of sports and energy drinks,cross-category competition between thesegments looks likely to remainintense.”

FIGHTING FATIGUE: Many turn to sports and energy drinks.

If you need newplants to extend plantedareas, or replace plantslost during the hot drysummer, now is a goodtime to start potting-upcuttings of manyperennial plants, notjust salvias, shrubs andtrees.

Shrubs and treecuttings often take bestif the cutting and pot issealed in a clear or semiopaque plastic bag.Rooting powder isavailable in Spain.

It is called ‘Hormonasde enraizamiento.’

By the way, if you arelearning Spanish, thereare comprehensivegardening vocabularies

If you have vegetablegluts, process some forunseasonal use duringthe winter or buy aturkey or a couple oflaying hens that will behappy to eat mostvegetables, to cut downon grain costs.

WHEN Zuri, a six-year-oldJack Russell disappearedon August 12, her ownerJone Jauregui, who lives inNerja, Malaga, never evendreamt that she would befound again - in all places- Bilbao.

How the dog managedto travel the 1,000kilometres that separateNerja and Bilbao, we maynever know, but Zuri’sowner is certainly giving ita lot of thought.

Jone, who is Basque bybirth but has lived in Nerjafor a decade, said: “I’mfrom Bilbao, and it’s truethat the dog has beenvisiting the area with meseveral times a year sinceshe was a puppy, everytime I go and see myfamily during the holidays.

“But to think that shecould have walked all thatway alone; I don’t believeit’s possible.

“I’m more inclined tobelieve that it was a purecoincidence.

“That someone who isalso from Bilbao took herwhilst holidaying here inNerja, and when sherecognised the area sheescaped.

“When she was found

by the police she waswearing a lead and collar, and when she escapedfrom my house her neckwas bare.”

Zuri, short for ‘zuribeltz’which is Basque for ‘blackand white,’ was taken toan animal shelter whereshe was picked up by herowner’s brother Javier.

In the end, it was Zuri’smicrochip which finallyreunited her with herowner. The chip carrieddetails including herowner Jone Jauregui’s fullname, DNI number andmobile phone number.

Jone continued: “Whenthey called me I couldhardly believe it. I hadthought that I would neversee her again, I had evenadopted another dog acouple of weeks before.

“The girl on the phoneasked if I was in Bilbao, and when I could comeand collect Zuri. I wasstunned when I heard theword ‘Bilbao.’ I called mybrother Javier who quicklywent to get her.”

Zuri will stay with Jone’sparents until Christmas, when they will finally bereunited during theholidays.

CATS all feeding from a row offood bowls look cute and youwill find many of these photos onthe web. Cute they may be. But theyare stressful for cats, even cats thatget on with each other.

Cats go hunting on their own andthey eat on their own. They don’tsocialise over a meal like us. So keepthose food bowls well apart.

Is your cat going bald? It could befleas. Some cats are so allergic to asingle flea bite that they pull or nibbletheir fur in this area. Cats also pull ornibble their fur if they have a painfularea, if they are allergic to some

forms of food, or if they are ill. Somecats even pull their fur out of stress. So take your cat to the vet anddiscuss the problem.

Choosing a pedigree kitten. Today’spedigree cats are beginning todevelop inherited diseases from toomuch inbreeding, just like diseasesfound in pedigree dogs.

It’s a complicated topic but worthlooking into before you decide on one

particular breed All the informationyou need can be found atInternational Cat Care -

www.icare.org. There are nowgenetic tests available for somedisorders, and you may like todiscuss these with cat breeders.

Helping feral cats. Many of usfeel sorry for the feral cats thathang about towns and resortareas scrounging food from

passers-by or out of dustbins. Many of us therefore feed them. Andonce they are being properly fed, thecats are more likely to survive andproduce more kittens.

If you are interested in trying tomake a real impact on the feral catproblem, you can get two useful freedownloads from World Society for theProtection of Animals athttp://www.wspa.org.uk/wspaswork/dogs/strayanimals/strayanimalresources.aspx.

EARLIER this year world leadingcar manufacturer Nissan revealedan innovative self-cleaning paintthat repels dirt.

Now according to experts, thistype of super-hydrophobiccoating will be available tosuperyachts within two years andis already in the research anddevelopment stage at many paintcompanies.

Jonathan Broughton of YachtSurface Restoration explained:“This product is still very new andwill need time and developmentbefore coming into the main-stream. Still, a lot has beenaccomplished in a short amountof time. I expect that we will seesomething viable for the marineindustry in the next couple ofyears.”

Super-hydrophobic coatingcreates a protective layer of air

between a surface and theenvironment preventing water, dirt and oil from adhering to thetreated surface. The coating itselfis anti-corrosive, anti-icing andalong with the obvious cleaningproperties will also preventmarine organism growth andreduce the drag of a yachtthrough water, resulting in lowerfuel consumption.

Additionally with manycomplex tenders and toys onboard, this water resistantcoating could increase thelongevity of expensive equip-ment.

Michael Henson, website anddigital marketing executive atYachting Pages, a specialist inproducts and services for thesuperyacht market said: “Ninetyper cent of tasks on board ayacht are cleaning jobs, so this

type of resilient paint could makea huge difference to the marinesector, saving a lot of time andmoney.”

However, despite its clearadvantages, Yachting Pagesspoke with many differentprofessional yacht paintingcompanies to find out if thisinnovative coating willrevolutionise the yachting world.

For all its benefits, there aresome fundamental flaws, NickBarber of Blue Fin explained:“The drawback with products ofthis nature is a yellowing andpetrol type staining for thecoloured finish, we decided notto recommend the use of ceramicpolishes or coatings on ourpainted yachts for this reason.

“If the product was repairableand offered the anti-scratch andself-cleaning, I’m sure it would

be a big hit in the marineenvironment.”

Dermot Joubert, operationsdirector of Tribos said: “Theproduct needs further develop-ment and proving. Based ontechnical articles I have read, theproduct adds cost and complexityand is not universally applicable.Apparently the product dries to atranslucent chalky finish whichmight suit a white vehicle butapparently leaves white streakson other coloured vehicles.

“This is counter intuitive togloss and shine. There are alsoquestions about the effectivenessof the product where the vehicleis static for an extended period.”

Michael Henson of YachtingPages added: “The Super-hydrophobic coating appears tohave a limited life span, due to itsvery low abrasion resistance the

constant friction thatyacht hulls receive wouldrequire regular re-application to maintain ahigh degree ofperformance. However, this science is still in theearly stages, withcontinual investment, I’msure specialists insuperyacht paint willsolve these issues in thenot-so-distant future.”
