Visiting Artist: Antonin Kubaiek
Many of you will recall the thrilling concert given by AntoninKubaiek and violinist Ivan Zenaty last March. That was the firstcollaboration between the Department of Music and theCzechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences of Alberta. It was sosuccessful that we are doing it again this year. Mr Kubaiek returnsto Edmonton, celebrating the 25th anniversary of his arrival inCanada.
Born in Czechoslovakia, Antonin Kubaiek gave many concerts inEurope and his reputation as a recording artist and professor at thePrague Conservatory grew rapidly. After emigrating to Canada here-established his career. The late Glen Gould was a great admirerof Kubalek's "rare mix of improvisatory freedom and structuralcontrol" and was instrumental in Kubalek's success by producing arecording of his performance of Korngold's Second Piano Sonata.
Mr Kubaiek serves on the teaching faculty of the RoyalConservatory of Music in Toronto and his recordings, most recentlyof the piano music of Johannes Brahms on the Dorian label,continue to draw praise..."these interpretations compel the seriousattention of pianists, Brahms aficionados, and anyone whodemands the best in piano performance." (Sinfonia Review.)
