I am 14 years old and I contacted the child helpline when the bullying at school became too much for me. The bullies called me names and I would try to ignore and hide from them, but that made me feel like a prisoner at home. I kept everything bottled up inside and started cutting myself, and I didn’t tell my parents even though this had been going on for more than a year.
The counsellors were helpful and I trusted them to listen to me. They told me about my rights and looked at all the options with me. I realised that the bullying was not my fault and decided on a teacher I could talk to. The teacher helped me, and I also talked to my parents about everything. My life is much better now!
I first called the child helpline about suicide and life after death. I had become involved in an online suicide group and was on a death quest to die in thirteen days. Feeling angry,
I wanted to know if life continued after death. The counsellor helped me figure out the real reasons I was on the death quest; not just curiosity like at first but because I thought death would end my problems. I liked talking to the counsellor because it was calm and friendly conversation and not like my parents always humiliating and screaming at me. Since then, when I was 15, I’ve called the child helpline often and the counsellors help me solve any problem.
I felt alone, unhappy and stupid when I called the child helpline. I am 14 years old, and my mother was being mean to me, threatening me and not letting me go out after school. She threatened to knock my teeth out if I missed any more school. I didn’t have a lot of friends because my mother didn’t let me go to social activities. I was crying when talking to the counsellor but she had me take some deep breaths and listened carefully to me and my problems.
I was afraid to give all my information to the counsellor so she could contact people who could help me, but I did and social services became involved. My mother is going to training for better parenting skills and I received psychological services for emotional abuse. I’m glad I called the child helpline and that they were so supportive.
Data Highlights
There has also been a significant increase in contacts related to child safety in the online environment. From 2014 to 2016 contacts have almost doubled. In 2016 most of the contacts on online abuse came from Northern Europe.
Online Safety
Children and youth contacted child helplines in our European network 4,297,867 times in 2016. Amongst these, 19,304 contacts came from differently-abled children. In 2,194 cases, child helplines gave advice on how to cope with different forms of disability.
Differently-abled Children
Children and youth are mostly affected by psychosocial and mental issues. They also struggle relating with their family members and peers. In 2016 alone, these issues accounted for 53% of all reasons of contact.
Psychosocial, Mental Health
Across the last three years the number of contacts on matters related to the school system has constantly raised.
School Related and Education
Children and youth contacted us 19,012 times in 2016 about their sexual orientation.
Sexuality and Sexual Awareness
Chats, emails and online fora are a very popular way of getting in contact with child helplines in Northern Europe. Telephone is the predominant way of communication for the rest of Europe.
Communication
Since 2014, the numbers of contacts connected to children migrating to foreign countries, and/or living amidst violence has tripled. Child helplines in Ukraine, Greece and Israel have received most of these contacts.
