EUROPE DAY FESTIVAL
Thank you to all those who joined us for Europe Day last Sunday. It was a beautifully sunny day full of activities, music, and great food. Student ‘BIS’ passports were a hit, certainly something we look forward to expanding upon next year. Great performances from the school band, as well as from the ‘Lesson Plans’ (BIS’ teacher band), kicked off a great event. We were also very grateful to have Mr. David Bonte speak on behalf of the European Union Delegation. Such a great event doesn’t happen without the hard work of many. A special thanks for Ms. Sheila and Ms. Magdalena, the organizers of this year’s Europe Day. Additionally, a big thanks to Mr. Thierry and Ms. Mirzat for their technical help to make things run so smoothly. BIS puts a lot of emphasis on its community driven nature and the high turnout this Sunday reaffirmed this. It was wonderful to have those from the greater Bishkek community join us for such a lovely event. You can find more photos from Europe day here.

As usual, orders can be placed online by going to https://eu-shop.scholastic.co.uk/schools/bishkekinternationalschool or by filling out the scholastics book club order form found in the latest catalogue and submitting it to the school library. JAPANESE TAIKO PERFORMANCE
What a wonderful Japanese Taiko performance this past Friday! Guests Mr. Kaiden and Ms. Kanykei from the Kyrgyz-Japan Center for Human Development (KRJC) put on a traditional Taiko performance giving some cultural insight to our Primary Students. Taiko is an ancient Japanese form of percussion using large drums. The drums range in size from roughly a snare drum ("shime"), to drums as large as a car (the "o-daiko"). The most common drum size in taiko is the "chu-daiko" which is the size of a wine barrel. During the 1900's, Taiko drumming became a musical art form that involved a music ensemble and tightly choreographed movements. This is taiko as we know it today. One of taiko's most defining aspects is it's dynamic playing style. Taiko playing is loud, hard, and fast, and involves a lot of choreographed movement which many identify with Japanese martial arts. Students were able to participate and even hold a brief Q & A session thanks to our translator Kaito Haraguchi (Diploma Program 1 student). A special thanks to Ms. Makiko for organizing this event.
HIKING ECA In accordance with IB Diploma Program syllabus, my team, which includes Anton Grier and Viktoriia Tian, decided to
introduce a camping/hiking ECA to our school curriculum. The idea was developed due to an absence of camping
field trips in a country with huge potential for outdoor tourism. So with the arrival of spring, we began to actively
organize the ECA and with it our first trip. The long, 5-day holiday gave us an excellent possibility to organize a trip
with no harm to anyone’s schedule and on 6th of May, our planned trip came into reality.
My team, Ms. Aida, our tour guide, Mihail Mihaylovich, and 13 students left school by bus at 8 am. We were driving
for 1 and a half hours to the Kegeti Gorge. There we first stopped to visit a magnificent waterfall, which you can see
on pictures and then we drove for additional 10 minutes until the hiking start point. The hike took place in a forest.
Our group was moving uphill for 1 and a half ours until a picnic point. During the hike, magnificent views opened for
us. We were happy to witness the beauty of spring in the mountains. We were also happy to have a rest after the
hike, to try Mihail Mihaylovich's tea made of wild grasses and berries, and to just enjoy snacks while looking at the
nature of Kyrgyzstan.
My team and I were happy to hear positive comments about the trip from our students. If you or your child did not
have a chance to come, we will be organizing another trip
at the end of June; this time camping trip. This trip will be
going for 2 days at the Kegeti Gorge. More information will
be shared next week. So be sure not to miss it!

The theme of this week in Preschool 1 was “Around
the world”. We explored continents, countries and
our home countries. We also learned our country flag
and marked them on a world map. We discovered
how people live differently in different countries and
how we speak in many different languages. We visited
India and made Mehndi, the art of painting henna on
hands, which is mostly associated with the wedding
ceremony. We were in Greece and had fun making
Greek salad. Finally, we discovered much about
Japanese culture and learned how to make origami.
This week Preschool 2 tuned into toys of the 1950s
/60s. Children compared toys from the past to the present and
identified and classified toys. We investigated to see how toys
changed over time and why. We watched an educational video
of 1950s toys, then we discussed if toys from the 1950s were
the same as today. Children gave their ideas on how the toys
from the past were the same or different from today; as we
talked about it, children began to learn the concept of old and
new. They also begin to think about what had changed in their
own lives from the past, for example clothes they wore or toys they played with; this helped children to develop
their speaking and listening skills. Children enjoyed making toys from long ago with fabric such as socks puppets and
paper clowns with movable limbs. Children
told us all about the toys they brought into
school for the week, if it looked like a toy from
long ago or today, why and how they play with
it, what their toys were made of and how the
toys moved.
This week Preschool 3 focused on maths and
literacy through nature. We sorted out
forest’s animals according to their habitat
(underground, water or forest). We explored
maps and what do the colors in the maps
mean (ocean, grass, forest, desert); we
realized that the forest is getting smaller and

the deserts getting bigger,
therefore we need to protect
the environment. We learned
to sort out nature objects like
sticks, leaves or seeds, and we
discovered that each person
may focus and sort out
objects according to different
characteristics. We followed
animal’s tracks to remember
our ‘tricky’ words; we played in a mud kitchen; we made tape bracelets to collect different
objects in our playground and then talked about them with the rest of the class. We also went
on a capital letter scavenger hunt around school, and then we had to place the letters we found next to the right
lower case letter. We had lots of fun.
Enjoy your weekend,
The Preschool Team.
