Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017 The most successful event during the 2017 Apuan Alps EGN was the Conference “Disaster Risk reduction in the Apuan Alps: the strategic area of intervention in the 1996 flood epicentre“ for the launch of the project on the memory of the past disaster in Mt. Forato valley. This was a special initiative with the presence of Irina Pavlova (UNESCO Section on Earth Sciences and Geo-hazards Risk Reduction) presenting a contribute entitled “Disaster risk reduction at UNESCO designated sites”. The conference was appreciated by a wide audience mostly formed by experts from Pisa University, politicians, Park guides and local villagers. The programme of the day also included the presentation of the book on the educational exhibition “Rain and Ruins”, a special video collecting the memories of people living in the area of the flood, in addition to the inauguration of the new Visitors Centre at Palazzo Rossetti in Seravezza.

During the 2017 European Geoparks Week, 23 activities were promoted on all islands of the archipelago, with the cooperation of the Azores Geopark partners, and involving a total of 391 participants.

Those activities included school sessions about the “Azorean Volcanoes” and “Azorean Rocks”, interpretative tours and trails in geosites, visits to interpretative centers, exhibitions, hiking trails, public sessions about the Azorean Geodiversity, online contests - such as the “QUIZ – Geoproducts of the Azores Geopark" with several questions about the geoproducts, and a radio program,- that allowed us to reach a broader and more diverse public.

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: A special programme, an outdoor geo-pedagogic activity day was organized for elementary school students in Fonyód. During this playful, interactive "geoday" the participants learned about the local geological, geomorphological features as well as about the cultural and biotic heritage. Some members of a civil organisation and the staff of the local museum helped us and contributed their local knowledge to these topics. At the last stop a geo-quiz was filled by the groups to summarize what they experienced and learned. This geoday was an excellent opportunity to create personal contacts with local students, teachers and civil organisations and to start a longer cooperation. This event also helps to build a local identity, linked to the local geological heritage. Celebration of a renewed geological nature trail near Alsóörs village: the Red Stone Nature Trail was renewed in 2015–2016 by young and enthusiastic volunteers of Pangea Association, one of our Geopark Partners. The municipality and the experts of the Geopark’s management organisation actively helped their work. Thanks to this successful cooperation, the local community received the ’Geosite of the Year in Bakony–Balaton Geopark’ award in 2016. The renovated trail is located in a disused stone quarry. Besides describing a typical rock type of the Geopark, the cca. 260 million years old Permian red sandstone, the new information panels present the history of quarrying, the rich cultural heritage and the biotic assets of the surrounding woodlands. And, as a bonus, there is a new board with selected photos of UNESCO Global Geoparks where clastic sediments and rocks form unique landscapes!

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: European Geoparks week 2017 has been a successful initiative. Year by year the participation of local people is bigger and the impact on the media is increasing at the same time. Two activities should be highlighted from the whole program: - Scientists and artists gathered in an innovative artistic-scientific initiative called Geo-Talks. The event had brief scientific talks from the hand of six specialists and included the participation of theater actors, musicians, singers and a cartoonist who managed to envelop the act with an innovative format of dissemination of science. For the first time the event was hold out of the Geopark, in San Sebastián, the capital city. - Sea cliffs cleaning by volunteers. More than 100 people cleaned around 2km of sea cliffs and withdraw several tones of plastic and general waste. All the bags were withdrawn by an helicopter due to the complicated access of the place. All the activity was recorded by TV cameras for a popular TV program

More than 250 students of the Valle Stura School District joined this meeting hosted at the Municipal Theatre in Rossiglione (GE) on May 24th. Geo & Outdoor – “Gran Trail Rensen 2017“ A trail running event organized with the partnership of local municipality and local runners and sport associations in the mountains around Arenzano on May 28th. More than 400 runners coming from seven countries had their performance along three different trails. A great day for outdoor sport in the Beigua Geopark territory. Geo & Geo – Guided walk to discover the Valle Gargassa’s canyon geosite and its geological and geomorphological features in Rossiglione on July 2nd. The event has been organized with the support of local farmers also to taste local products.

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: For the EGN week 2017 geopark staff prepared bunch of activities and events. We organized three fieldtrips mostly for high school students, focused on hydrology, metamorphic rocks and sandstone phenomenon of Bohemian Paradise and one special excursion for Spanish learning students held exclusively in Spanish language by our intern. Very important part of EGN week was 3-day-long “4th Conference of National Geoparks of Czech Republic” in Nová Paka with rich accompanying programme – field trips, excursions, exhibition “GeoExpo” (the most prominent participants were senator of Senate of Parliament of Czech republic and representatives of 2 ministries). The programme of EGN week 2017 culminated by traditional Old Bohemian Market (display of local craftsmanship with numerous cultural events, 8000+ participants) and opening of “Quiet castle Rotštejn” – this ruin of rock castle is now hearing-impaired friendly!

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: During the XI European Geoparks Week, there have been many activities with a big aflluence such the celebration of the Geoloday of the province of Almeria, with regional repercussion and interviews in regional Andalusian TV with Lucia Tejero, the director /curator and the Scientific Tourism Workshop, where the measures taken from the geopark to favor scientific tourism in the area were shown. Scientific Tourism is very important at the geopark and right now is one of the main objectives at the Geopark.

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: The sustainable development day at the Lycée La Versoie 6th form college was a particular success, during which more than 60 students explored their territory from a fresh new perspective. In an informal setting, and using models and images of the territory, students were free to ask questions and to push their ideas concerning local natural risks, as well as man’s economic use of local resources. A second very different event was that of the “Nordic Walking Tour of Lake Léman”. With four different events, possible ranging from the 185km ultra-hike to the discovery trail. Walkers were guided by Chablais UGG guides for their safety and to discover the heritage of Lake Léman. More than 200 people took part over five days.

Event: “En Syrmo 2017 - The art train”

The events entitled "En Syrmo 2017 - The art train" presented the uniqueness of Odontotos Rack Railwayand its enchanting journey as a work of art, combined with the art of nature across the Gorge of the Vouraikos river of Chelmos-VouraikosGeoprark. This is the place where Ioannis Spyropoulos, the world-renowned painter, the "classic of abstraction", was first painted. In this place, Dionysis Papagiannopoulos, the "prince of theater and cinema", stood and played for the first time on the theater of his school. For this purpose, during this year, students from the Athens School of Fine Artswere invited, who accompanying with their professors, visited Vouraikos Gorge with Odontotos Rack Railway to experience the unique route and its beauties. After visiting the Geopark exhibition, they created works of art, which were exhibited successively during the events in an exhibition in the municipalities of Aegialia and Kalavrita. The aim of the event was to make the region known to the artistic world and through the projects to expand its recognition.

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: The two most successful events this year (of a large number of small events) are as follows: Bunmahon Gala This was a celebration of the history and community of the village of Bunmahon within the Copper Coast Geopark. Featured events included an audio visual presentation by local school children on the history of the village, old fashioned lawn games and historical fancy dress. This was particularly linked to the mining heritage of the village and the 10th anniversary of the visit to the village of well known New Zealand painter Edith Collier. The Gala had a variety of events which were aimed at different audience from school children to adults and was attended by over 100 people. Tra Na Mbo Geowalk This was a guided geological walk from our Geologist to the hidden cove of Tra Na Mbo which is a spectacular, and relatively hidden, example of our volcanic geology. The event was aimed primarily at adults and took place on the 25th of May at 7pm. The event was well attended with more than 40 people joining the walk. During the walk there was also a chance to view some of the minerals found along the coast here.

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: The World Geopark El Hierro commemorated the III European Week Geoparks 2017 , from 20-29 May, with a calendar of varied activities aimed at promoting and preserving the geological and cultural heritage of the island, through proposals in geology, culture and education. El Hierro Geopark made a varied offer of events and activities that began on May 6 with the celebration of the Geoloday 17 El Hierro , a boat route, the only one in Spain, "A look into the interior of the volcanic cones: the Cliffs of E l Hierro ", led by the Geoscientist of our Geopark, Dr. Ramón Casillas, of the ULL, and the participation of a diverse group of people, from geologists, petrologists, visitors, tourist guides, students and professors, with a total of 30 participants. On this occasion the VI Regional Meeting and the IV Insular Meeting of Hiking with a total of more than 150 participants were organized. Within the training activities carried out for geopark guides, the 1st Geological and Ethnographic Route of the Ju lan was developed, a combined route for the knowledge and interpretation of this important enclave of the Geopark. In the last stage of the Program of activities and in commemoration of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism, the "2nd weekend El Hierro Geoparque " was held, beginning with the Open Day of the Interpretation Centers of the Geopa rk (IC Geological and Volcanological IC) , And concluding within the section Geo & Culture, art and show, the "Festival for Sustainability, LA RAYA AZUL ", show fusion of culture and environmental education for sustainable tourism. A festival with motivation in this The International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. This festival consisted of outdoor concerts, different workshops for children and young people on recycling and development of vertical gardens, among others, and a multimedia show inspired by music, poetry and video images in nature, with more than 2.000 participants.

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: Once again one of the most popular events was Street Art Fossils. Now run for the second year and led by local artist David Harbot in partnership with Torre Abbey the event attracted all ages. Fossils were drawn on the pavement using various mediums including pigments created from local rock. Whilst the children were busy creating their images David takes advantage of the opportunity to talk with the visiting groups about aspects of our local geopark, the wider network and the important topic of climate change.

As in previous years this event attracted approximately 1000 people.

A Walk with the National Trust in the Central Beacons A Walk with the National Trust in the Central Beacons: A walk in partnership with the Brecon Beacons Park Society (BBPS) and the National Trust via Cefn Cwm Llwch, Pen y Fan, Corn Du and visiting Llyn Cwm Llwch before returning around Twyn y Dyfnant. Rob Reith, the Trust’s lead ranger,explored the landscape and introduced participants to the history, management and conservation of this special place. This event is the product of the successful partnership between the Geopark, the the Brecon Beacons Park Society and the Natuonal trust.

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: Discover Prehistoric Groningen, A route by bicycle along geological and historical sites The opening of the geopark week took place this year with a bicycle route offered as a pop-up route. This start, with many prominent guests, generated a lot of publicity. The cycle route Discover prehistoric Groningen is organized as a pop-up route. Churches, Mills, a monastery, hunebeds and a pingo ruin are open and cyclists are invited to take a look. Information is provided by guides. Discover prehistoric Groningen was also offered as an activity during the geopark week.

- The GEOfestival 2017 program was presented at Press-conference (19.05.2017), attended by various media in Pliberk/Bleiburg (AT). The program of the Press-conference was diversified by children from Kindergarden Šmihel nad Pliberkom/St. Michael ob Bleiburg, who prepared very interesting theatre play titled Big and small stone.

- 01.06.2017 in the Galicija/Gallizien (AT), near Wildensteiner waterfall, School Choirs´ meeting took place, with more than 300 singers from 9 different Geopark Karavanke/Karawanken schools.

- In the frame of GEOfestival 2017 we organized first Crossborder Petzen/Peca Football Cup (03.06.2017, Prevalje, SLO); 7 different teams (U-7) participated, from both side of the border.

- In the frame of GEOfestival 2017 Photo Contest “WE ARE UNESCO!” took place; the final event was at 07.06.2017 in Pliberk/Bleiburg (AT), where the awards were announced.

- 09.06.2017 in Lavamünd/Labot (AT) the Geopark Karavanke/Karawanken run was organised - „Geopark mini run“, international „Geopark school relay“ and „Geopark family run for health“.

In all 45 people turned up, most traveling 2,5-3 hours each way for the hike, and had exceptional weather and gave fantastic publication through live footage and publications on social media.

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: The most successful activities during the Lanzarote and Chinijo Islands EGN Week were two events especially: “Lanzarote Planetary Course” and the premier of the Documentary "The Culture of the Volcano". The Course of Planetary Guide was mainly destined to the guides of the tourist sector and its objective was the transfer of knowledge towards the visitors and tourists who visit our Geopark.The places allocated for this free theoretical-practical course were all occupied and the attendees showed great receptivity and they liked a lot the teacher, Proffesor Jesús Martínez-Frías. The premier of the documentary "Volcano Culture" was also a public success and a highly emotional moment, because we had the presence in the room of many of the participants in the documentary (very old) and their families.

Total=555 2. Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: It has been the first year that we have celebrated free activities for the public since we are Geopark. They have all been very exciting. Perhaps the most remarkable was the announcement of the designation as UNESCO Geopark on the day of Geoloday, in front of almost 290 people, many of them followers of the project for years, in the two provinces at the same time and joining both excursions at an intermediate point with a party at the end. It was also very exciting the artistic intervention-perform in the abandoned village of Ceniceros, where former settlers heard voices and sounds as once, very endearing. The rest of activities, talks in different villages and field trips, are always interesting for the local population that participates in them. Some of the themes of these talks and field trips were proposed last year by the working tables of the Geopark.

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: With great success celebrated Lesvos Geopark the EGN Week 2017. The events were organized by the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest. The events were aiming to raise awareness on the Earth heritage of Lesvos and to sensitise the public and especially youngsters on issues conserning the protection of the natural and geological monuments and to raise earthquake hazard awareness and coping children’s emotions. Highlight of the EGN Week 2017 in Lesvos was the organisation of the special educational programme “Earthquakes & Seismic hazard” which was about the sensitisation on earthquake awareness and the educational activity of simulating disastrous earthquakes in the seismic table of the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest and the implementation of precaution measures during an earthquake event. Another highlight of the EGN Week 2017 was the “Green route” a special event in central and western Lesvos Geopark, which was organised in collaboration with the Archeological Ephorate of Lesvos and the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest under the aegis of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. It included a geotour in central and western Lesvos Geopark entitled “Following the Aristotle’s and Theophrastus pathways in Lesvos, visiting sites where science was born”. The participants visited geological, natural, cultural and archaeological sites of Lesvos UNESCO Global Geopark. Geo-guided tours with a glass bottomed boat were organised in the Nissiopi marine Petrified Forest Park, a geotourist activity were created by the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest. During the Green Week were also organised hiking tours in the Parks of the Petrified Forest, guided tours in the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, presentations of slide shows, documentaries, food tasting of local products and educational programmes for school groups.

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: All activities carried out in the Geopark Week program have been interesting and have been remarkably successful in the public, but in particular: Excursion on May 27th at the Geological Trail : Inghiottitoio Battaglietta by geologists

Alessandro and L. Fabio Torre and of the Municipality of Petralia Sottana. Numerous students, visitors and industry experts have joined this excursion because this itinerary allows you to observe the karstic shapes of the carbonate clumps that make up the reliefs of the Piano Battaglia mountainous area. The whole route becomes an open-air laboratory where you can study and question the geologic evolution of an area so studied and full of scientific ideas.

The guided tour on June 11 of the geological trail of Sclafani Bagni and the visit to the old Spas by the Anas Association. A path to discover geological events in the rocks discovered along the way, but also the monumental stone and the historic center. The event was attended by the director of the Park Authority and the Mayor of Sclafani Bagni Which they spoken to the many and enthusiastic participants the value of the geological and natural heritage in the Madonie Park

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: The most innovative and successful activity has been the opening of Ørsdalen mines that has been secured against geohazard and official opened to the public with the participation of more than 100 people thanks to that Magma Geopark secured bank-funds for the job. Many local people, politicians and journalist attended to the event. Magma Geopark had pre opening testing tour with Vikeså secondary school (36 kids), inside the new visit mine in Ørsdalen. There has been the Concert in Jøssingfjord on the Magma Geopark dancing platform. Magma Geopark has with bank foundation financed the building of the wooden dancing platform in the fjord. The program was free classical concert open to the public. Many people participated to the concert and enjoy the activity. Vågen Upper Secondary school had a day in Magma Geopark with all their classes, Magma staff guided 163 kids along the old railway route telling about the geology of Magma Geopark and the establishment of the old railroad.

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: Linking different artistic disciplines with geology has proved to be a very useful tool to disseminate the geological values of the region. It was especially emotional the classic guitar concert that we organized in the Hoz Canyon under the title "Mother Earth". With this activity we also wanted to vindicate the role of Women in music in harmony with the landscape. The duo Arcadia prepared a repertoire with works composed by women which evoked landscapes. We chose for it a spectacular place in our Geopark where Geology predominates in each one of its elements. On the other hand, the Gymkhana Geocaching has obtained a good answer by the users. We hide seven boxes in some of the most important geological points of interest in the Geopark and register them on the international Geocaching platform. These “geocaches” contained geological information, the associated geo-path booklet, an aragonite, the Molina-Alto Tajo Geopark Tourist Guide and a log book. We have obtained numerous entries where users rate the information as very interesting.

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: Guided tours and associated conferences were the most important events of the week, which took place in several villages in the mountainous part of the Geopark. At Saint-Front, Le Monastier and Chaudeyrolles, guided tours were organized with the support of the local association CPIE du Velay at geosites Vallée de l'Aubépin, Dents du diable and Souteyros cascade A conference was also given about the architecture and the use of local stones for traditional building around Mount Mezenc. MM. Borget (CPIE du Velay), Cortial (groupement géologique de Haute Loire) and Lavachery (Centre Haroun Tazieff) were in charge of the guided tours and other activities.

In Jaunac and Arcens, guided tours, animation for schoolchildren, conferences and a concert at Rocher de Brion geosite brought together around 90 persons.

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2016: At the 10th June, the polish Geopark Association and the polish Geopark community Łęknica called for the sports event “seven-bridges-run”. This race led the participants through the Polish–German UNESCO World Heritage Prince-Pückler-Park and the German–Polish UNESCO Geopark Muskauer Faltenbogen / Łuk Mużakowa at once – across the beautiful landscape of the natural ice-shaped and artificial re-modelled Neiße River valley. More than 250 runners followed the course, which led over seven bridges crossing the border river Neiße and the so called Hermannsneiße, an artificial creek in the Pückler-Park. Together with around 800 visitors the runners experienced and celebrated the boundlessness of the landscape, enhanced by Geopark and Heritage activities beside the run.

The celebration of the national Day of the Geologist was made by the first time. The organization was a responsibility of the Living Science Centre of Forest in Proença-a-Nova and Naturtejo, and had a national wide promotion by the Portuguese Association of Geologists. A full day activities included a meeting between students of Geology from the University of Lisbon and pupils from the local highschool where they look to answer to questions based on the geological subjects of the Science Centre Exhibitions. In the afternoon there was a guided visit to the Geomonument of Portas de Almourão with a structural geologist from the Living Science Centre of Estremoz that finished with tasting of a GeoGin prepared by an expert in the local scenery of folded quartzites and junipers.

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: As part of a larger outreach programme, Geopark Odsherred have launched a bicycle path, going around the innermost part of the reclaimed Lammefjord, as well as an audio walk revitalizing the story of both the reclaiming of the fjord, the geology of the area, and especially the famed vegetables. Furthermore, the project also includes – and perhaps most importantly - a visitor’s field, focusing on the dissemination and teaching of local agricultural management of farmlands. With free admittance on the opening day of the field, approx. 500 people attended the festivities, e.g. collecting free vegetables from an array of different varieties. The visitor’s field is leased on a long-term basis by the geopark, and is operated in cooperation with a group of volunteer farmers from the Lammefjord area.

Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: One of the highlights of the Geopark week was the action day at the 30th of May. The day began with a guided tour through the 2017 special exhibition “Rudolf Lettner – 100 years ski steel edge”. The afternoon program started with a bread baking adventure at the Creek mill (Bachmühle - former ore mill) Lehen. After that, the excursion leads from there to the Rain Chapel and further onto the centre of the Geopark, Bischofshofen. Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: Most important activities during the Geoparks week were the opening of the new MTB trail at Rokua Esker and Dune Area, and the participation to the Northern Finland outdoor life fairs. Opening of the new MTB trail was held at Rokua on May 22nd. The event gathered about 100 participants to test new bikes and trails. The event would have gathered more participants, but due to late spring we still had snow and ice on the trails, and most of the trail network was still impossible to drive. Northern Finland Outdoor Life Fair was a 4-day event held from 25th May to the 28th May 2017 in Oulu, Finland. Rokua Geopark gathered a team of local Geopark businesses to present their products to the fair audience. The fairs were participated by 46 000 persons. The amount of people visiting the Geopark booth is hard to estimate, but it’s something between 2000-5000. Specially the new MTB trail and new Geopark brochures gathered a lot of interest

Landscape guides of the Swabian Alb offered a special guided tour to the burning charcoal kiln in Münzdorf with explanations of the charcoal burner. The production of charcoal was very frequent in former times and a traditional craft on the Swabian Alb but also a craft being in extinction.

“Building stones in towns”. Earth historical walking tour in Balingen city organized by the Geopark Infocentre Werkforum Holcim company. It is a joint event between Holcim company and Geopark to highlight the existing partnership between both partners.

The athletes were very pleased with the chosen cycling route in the heart of Troodos Geopark. Another great action was the photo contest about Troodos Geopark. It was very successful as we had 117 participants who showed great interested about Troodos Geopark and the contest. The best three photos chosen by an expert’s team won prizes from Troodos Geopark area (free accommodation, free sports activities etc.). Fifty photos were also chosen for creating the digital photo album of our Geopark. A third activity that was also very successful was the night hiking event at the geotrail “Teisia tis Madaris” in which 210 people participated.

Musical events and theatrical performances are tools that make discovering the most hidden and beautiful places in the geopark. Actors, poets, artists, writers and geologists, archaeologists and guides alternate their performance during the walk. The events are divided into two different moments: the walk (with artists and guides) and the concert in a particular place. No stage, no lights, no microphones. The artistic performance is absolutely acoustic and immersed in the natural environment Between the two events a tasting of typical products is organized. Events are free and viewers must book. Then a new workshop was set up to learn minerals of Geopark for kids. This educational workshop for small groups (max 4-5 students per time) for about 30 minutes addresses all of mineral properties. Highlight most successful activities of your Geoparks Week 2017: After the successful premiere in 2015, a parcours on environmental education was offered for kindergarten and primary school kids during this year’s EGN Week. At 12 stations organized by regional providers of environmental education, NGOs and producers of regional products, there were games, information and participatory activities around the topics earth history, flora, fauna and regional myths. "In addition to its aim of improving knowledge of the Earth’s history, flora, fauna and nature protection, the Parcours also stimulates a sense of regional identity among the younger generation," says Andreas Schüller, describing the motivation for this event. About 400 children from regional kindergartens and primary schools in Meerfeld, Daun, Mehren, Üxheim, Strohn and Oberstadtfeld have finished the course with their tutors and teachers. The event was a big success and there were demands to repeat the parcours in the future.
