What are European Technology Platforms?

• Industry-led stakeholder fora, key actors in driving

innovation, knowledge transfer and European

competitiveness.

• ETPs develop research and innovation agendas and

roadmaps for action at EU and national level.

• By working effectively together, ETPs deliver solutions

to major challenges of key concern to citizens.

• ETPs are independent and self-financing entities.

What do ETPs do? (1/2)

ETPs have a strategy, mobilisation and dissemination

function. In order to fulfil their role, their main activities

encompass:

• Developing industry-focused strategic research and

innovation agendas including technology roadmaps

and implementation plans;

• Encouraging industry participation in Horizon 2020,

and beyond, and cooperating with networks in Member

States;

What do ETPs do? (2/2)

• Fostering networking opportunities with other ETPs

and other partners along the value chain to address

cross-sectoral challenges and promote the move

towards more open models of innovation;

• Identifying opportunities for international

cooperation;

• Acting as one of the channels of external advice for

the programming and implementation of Horizon 2020;

ETPs have been a key driving force behind PPPs.

The Task: Develop a New Research and Innovation Agenda

2007: 1st Strategic Research Agenda (SRA)

2008: SRA Implementation plan (IAP) (FP 7)

2012: 2nd Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA)

2014: SRIA Implementation plan (Horizon 2020)

2016: New SRIA

2017: New IAP

New SRIA Development Process

• The very tough schedule required to pursue a top-down

approach to come up quickly with a compelling document;

• The bottom-up part (research idea collection) was done via

the Scientific Working Groups;

• Developed a general structure with a Part A (Strategy, LT)

and a Part B (Action Item, SWGs).

SRIA Structure – Part A: Strategy

• State of Play of the Sector

• Economic Importance

• Global Position (SWOT Analysis)

• Sector Challenges & Forecasted Need Statements

• Consumer Engagement and Perception of Food

• Demographic Changes

• Resources

• Ambition and Mission

• Action items grouped into three R&I targets:

• increase the engagement and involvement of consumers (1)

• create a more personalized and customized food supply (2)

• develop a more flexible, dynamic and sustainable food system (3)

• Each target is to be achieved by carrying out 5-6 action items

of similar granularity (several calls from one action item

feasible, but can be worked upon over a 3 year frame).

• Guiding principle was to have an appropriate combination on

novelty, scientific quality, feasibility & impact.
