The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most revolutionary technology trends of this lifetime. International Data Corporation (IDC), a global provider of market intelligence, predicts global IoT revenue will reach $7.065B by 2020 and the installed based of IoT units to grow at 17.5% to 28.1 billion during the same time period. “ The goal of the IoT Academy is to ensure graduates are well versed in the Internet of Things, but not just the definition. It is important they know the business importance, the tremendous opportunity for value creation for companies, the technology and software needed to make smart, connected products, the entrepreneurship of new ideas and the real-world importance of teamwork to bring solutions around this technology trend to market.”

Aida Boukhris Research Associate, Chair of Information Systems and Value Creation, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU)

With that prediction comes the need for skilled workers in the tech job market. The World Bank report “ICT for Greater Development” reports there will be an estimated 2 million information and communication technology (ICT) jobs left unfulfilled in the next 10 years. Augmented reality, 3D printing, other new tech-nologies are making it easier to create smart, connected products for consumers to use in the Internet of Things world.

Using this opportunity to address the IoT skills gap, Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU), UnternehmerTUM, and STARTIFY7 combined efforts to develop the Bavarian Entrepreneurship Academy of Internet of Things.

Bavarian Entrepreneurship Academy of Internet of Things

The academy was built around an interactive program with an emphasis on teamwork, hands-on learning, interactive workshops and strong professional mentorship. It is part of an EU Horizon 2020 project, STARTIFY7, that aims to develop European wide system of summer academies for university and final year high schools students entirely focused on ICT entrepreneurship. Each academy, seven in total, is expected to create a dynamic learning environment by having a training rationale that focuses on quickly testing hypotheses, gathering early and frequent feedback, and developing “minimum viable products”. The training places strong emphasis on learning-by-doing and promoting action learning rather than passive listening.

Participants have access to state of the art laboratories such as the Makerspace and JOSEPHS® to help develop their IoT projects and learn about the IoT. The goal is to train future entrepreneurs to prototype IoT products and design business models based on decentralized manufacturing and a customer-driven approach.

University Collaboration

The academy starts at UnternehmerTUM in Munich, where participants focus on team building, understanding the technical foundations of the IoTs, exploring prototyping tools and facilities, identifying startup opportunities, and designing prototypes.

PTC delivers a workshop that includes an introduction to Creo, computer-aided design software to help with product prototypes, as well as an introduction to ThingWorx, a development platform to help build IoT dashboards to monitor data from smart, connected products. In addition, each student is granted access to the PTC IoT Academic Program, which includes software, technical support, and curriculum to help with the connectivity feature of their projects.

Then, at JOSEPHS®, an open innovation lab located in Nuremberg, participants carry on to understand their customers as potential consumer of their new products. This involves business development, market assessment, financial model analysis, and prototype testing. The capstone of the project is the final demo day where the teams pitch for funding.

Three Project Highlights

The Bavarian Entrepreneurship IoT Academy is off to a promising start, with a look at three projects with high potential for funding by organizations throughout Europe:

• Connected modular bracelet. Enables the wearer to tailor functionality using detachable modules that measure physiological signals. These signals are then visualized and monitored through a mobile app.

• Connected camera. Uses a smart plugin module for action cameras that are equipped with a machine learning algorithm which triggers the camera to take pictures based on the user’s movement.

• Connected luxury bracelet. A pair of bracelets for those in long-distance relationships to experience the feeling of each other’s heartbeats.
