Now with trainer Luca Cumani in Newmarket, the bay quickly established himself as Italy’s finest performer in recent years with fluent scores in last season’s G1 Premio Presidente della Repubblica at the Cappanelle in May and G1 Gran Premio di Milano the following month. Sandown’s formidable hill has tamed many front-runners, but Kevin Darley ripped up the script as hepowered up Desert Deer to make all in impressive fash-ion. Jaber Abdullah’s giant chestnut ended his 2002campaign by beating Masterful a half length in theListed Joel S. at Newmarket in October, thereby enter-ing many notebooks as a horse to follow at the ripe ageof five. He may have been beaten by lack of peak fit-ness as well as a smart rival in Olden Times (GB) whenfinishing runner-up in the G3 Earl of Sefton S. back atthat track last Wednesday. Given his head by Darleyfrom the gate in this contest, he surged into a clearlead, setting furiously fast fractions. He never looked indanger of coming back to his rivals as he began thedrive up the straight, maintaining a relentless gallop tothe line. Conditioner Mark Johnston, who has his sightsset on the G1 Juddmonte Lockinge S. at Newbury May17, said, “He has big feet, he’s a heavy horse and helikes firm ground and those things don’t really go to-gether. He’s always been a horse that has been highlyrated and talked about, but there have been endlessniggly little problems. [Joe Mercer, racing manager toJaber Abdullah] has always had the Lockinge as thetarget and that is still the aim.” Click for theracingpost.co.uk chart or the free brisnet.comcatalogue-style pedigree.

*Se Me Acabo (Columbus Day) finished third, but wasdisqualified and placed fourth. Keys To The Heart had posted just one previous win, breaking her maiden at Churchill Downs in November of2001. Off the board in all five starts last season, thedark bay showed some life when second in an allow-ance race going a mile on the Santa Anita turf Jan. 12.She came back to be third in both the Jan. 31 Reloy H.at 10 furlongs and a Mar. 1 allowance at a mile and aneighth on the lawn, but failed to fire in her latest, run-ning eighth in the Apr. 5 Miss America S. at Bay Mead-ows. Switching to the main track as the rank outsiderin this four-horse field, Keys To The Heart tracked SeMe Acabo through moderate opening fractions, tookover after six furlongs and held off Rhiana for the nar-row score. Richard Quinn was largely responsible for getting theclass act Indian Creek in front in the final strides in thiscontest in a vintage display of jockeyship. The winner’srunning style requires an understanding rider, and thatwas seen to great effect as the patchy traveller wasbrought from the rear with his challenge in the straight.Quinn registered one crack with the whip as he set offin pursuit of Bourgainville at the bottom of the hill, putit down immediately and kidded the five-year-old past inthe final strides under a hand ride. Enduring a rough ride despite the smallfield, he received a bump from Red Carpet (GB) (Pivotal{GB}) out of the stalls before winning a barging matchwith Gateman in the shade of the post as he crept fromthe rear under Richard Hughes. “Prince Khalid Abdullahwould love to win the G1 Juddmonte Lockinge S. Saint Verre had taken advantage of an off-the-turfsituation once before, wiring the field in the CliffHanger S. over a sloppy strip at the Meadowlands last October. He didn’t fare as well trying a wet track atAqueduct in his next outing, tiring to be seventh in theGIII Sport Page H., but ended the year with a third-place finish behind Balto Star in an allowance at the BigA Nov. 21. The bay started 2003 in Florida, runningsecond to Windsor Castle in the Jan. 11 GIII Hal’s HopeH., but was tough to handle early and could do nobetter than 10th in the Feb. 22 GI Donn H. Saint Verrereturned to Aqueduct for his latest and finished fifthbehind Classic Endeavor (Silver Buck) in the Apr. 5 GIIIExcelsior Breeders’ Cup H., but turned the tables onthat one here. Sprinting right to the lead, he widenedhis advatange at every call to win decisively. “I wasconfident around the far turn,” winning jockey JoseEspinoza said. “I knew I had a lot of horse. When Iasked him to run, he really took off.” Classic Endeavor, the crowd’s 2-1 choice, pressed the pace and faded tobe eighth and last. “He broke bad,” jockey Edgar Pradosaid. “He’s a much better horse when he’s on the lead. That plan pretty much went out the window.” Clickhere for the brisnet.com chart.
