A POTTER’S STUDIO IS DESIGNED TO LOCATE IN STUDLEY PARK, VICTORIA
NATURE IS THE KEY IDEA EXPLORED IN THIS DESIGN, INSPIRED BY THE NATURALISTIC CHARACTERISTIC OF THIS SITE, A FORM OF TREE BRANCH IS TAKEN AS THE BASE FLOOR PLAN, BEING CUT THROUGH THE MIDDLE TO CRE-ATE A OUTDOOR COURTYARD. EARTHY MATERIALS ARE USED IN THIS PROJECT TO BLEND THIS BUILDING INTO THE NATURAL PARK. THE SCULPTURAL FORM IS MINIMALISM TO REFLECT THE CONTEXT OF POTTERY ARTISTRY.

THE CENTRAL OUTDOOR SPACE IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE A BUFFER ZONE BETWEEN PRIVATE SPACE (STUDIO AND HOUSE) AND PUBLIC SPACE (EXHIBITION BUILDING). IT IS LANDSCAPED WITH A WATER FEATURE AND CIRCULAR WOODEN DECKING TO GIVE A GENTLE ATOMSPHERE OF THE SITE. A SMALL EXQUISITE FOOT BRIDGE IS LOCATED TO CONNECT THE TWO AREAS, REFLECT THE STUDLEY PARK BRIDGE, WHICH IS DERIVED FROM PREVIOUS SITE STUDY ON “MEMORY AND REFLECTION”.

ATOMSPHERE: THE CHARACTER OR FEELING OR MOOD OF A PLACE OR A SITUATION.A MUSEUM DESIGNED FOR CLIMATE RECOGNITION - A WEATHER MUSEUM.THE INNER LAYER OF THIS ARCHITECTURAL PIECE IS A FOUR-LEVEL CONCRETE MUSEUM, THE OUTER ENVELOP ARE MADE UP BY CURTAIN WALL WITH AN WIND-REPONISIVE NORTH FACADE.THE IDEA IS TO EMPHASIS THE MOVEMENT OF NATURAL, WHETHER IS LIGHT OR WIND. IT IS THE ATOMSPHERE OF BE-ING CONCENTRATED ON HUMAN SENSORS, RATHER THAN EXPOSING TO THE URBAN CONTEXT.

THE WEATHER MUSEUM SERVES MULTI-FUNCTIONS. THERE ARE EXHIBTION SPACE, MEDIATATION SPACE, AND PUBLIC THEATRE. CIRCULATION IS DESIGNED LIKE GOING THROUGH A SENSORY JOURNEY INVOLVES LIGHT AND SHADOW, OPENESS AND NARROWNESS, CONCRETE AND WATER. ON THE TOP FLOOR, THERE IS A CANTILEVERED SKY BRIDGE EXTRUDED OUT OF THE FACADE TO GIVE VISITORS A SPECATULAR EXPERIENCE OF STANDING IN THE AIR.

THIS PROJECT EMPHAIZE ON PROGRAMS, SENSORY EXPERIENCE AND QUALITY, CIRCULATION AND SPATIALLY PERCEP-TION. LIGHT, SHADOWS, WIND ARE THE NATURAL PERFORMERS.

Idea of Facadethis is about a style of living, through the curves of nature, music and emotion. It mafnifies the passion of the blossmingspring and powerful nature. It reminds people the freedomto choose and elaborate life.to choose and elaborate life.
At the same time, the design reflects various themes in the ‘summer of the seventeenth doll’, it is about the lost and seeking for directions; it is about love, waiting to sprout; and it eventually about and it eventually about growing up.
This dramatic art nouveum style facade will definately raise attention from urban dwellers, and become a new landmark theatre in carlton.

the facade of this doll theatre is made of three individual panels being connecting together,light-weight colored glazing is chosen for this organic shape with combination of steel supporting structure. exterior lighting system is installed behind the glazing to givea growing effect.

THE DOLL THEATRE IS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR ‘THE SUMMER OF THE SEVENTEENTH DOLL (1955)’, AN AUSTRAL-IAN CLASSICAL PLAY. THE SITE IS LOCATED AT ONE OF THE HERITAGE SUBURB, CARLTON, CHARACTERISED BY VICTO-RIAN TERRANCE HOUSE WITH A TYPICAL LONG RECTANGULAR PLAN.
TAKING ONE OF THE KEY THEMES IN THE PLAY - ‘INDIVIDUALITY’, THE DESIGN OF THIS DOLL THEATRE FOLLOWS A FREESTYLE EXTERIOR FORM TO REFLECT THE EMOTION OF THE CHARACTERS, THEIR LIFE, THOUGHTS AND HOPE.

THE PLAN IS COMPOSED OF A FRONT THEATRE LOBBY, A CENTRAL AUDITORIUM SPACE AND BACKSTAGE LODAING SPACE, AS IT IS ALSO A REFELCTION OF A TRADITIONAL LOCAL TERRACE HOUSE LAYOUT. ON TOP OF THE THEATRE IS A ROOF GARDEN BAR FOR GENERAL REFRESHMENT AFTER THE SHOW. THE FOCUS OF THIS PROJECT IS THE DESIGN OF EXTERIOR FACADE AND INTERIOR ATOMSPHERE, ART NOUVEAU ELEMENTS ARE USED IN THE FACADE DESIGN.

THE PERFORMANCE IS AN INSTALLATION EXHIBITING THE COLLECTIVE OUTCOME OF EXPERIMENTATION AND WORK COMPLETED BY MASTER-LEVEL STUDENTS DURING SEMESTER 2, 2011 AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE. THIS STUDIO EXPLORED INTERACTIVE MEDIA, PARAMETRIC GEOMETRY, EMERGENCE AND PHYSICAL COMPUTATING. BY EXPLORING THE GENERATIVE CAPABILITES OF COMPUTING, THE STUDIO AIMED TO DEMONSTRATE THAT OUTCOMES OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CAN BE USEFULLY UNDERSTOOD AS DYNAMIC AND RESPONSIVE PERFORMANCES RATHER THAN STATIC AND PASSIVE OBJECT.

THE GROUP OUTCOME WAS A SUCCESS, THE PROJECT WAS STIMULATING ENOUGH FOR PEOPLE TO QUESTION WHAT WAS OCCURING. WHAT OBJECT IS TRIGGERING THE LIGHTING, THE SOUND? AT THE SAME TIME, THE NOISE OF THIS GIANT INFLATABLE THING WHISPERING. THE VISITORS LOVE TO SIT INSIDE AND WATCH THE CHANGING PATTERNS OF AGENT PROJECTION. CALM - REFLECTIVE - AGITATEDTHIS STUDIO IS A WORTHWHILE PART OF MY ACADEMIC EDUCATION AND I HOPE TO PURSUE SOME OF THE STUDIO THEMES AND SKILLS I HAVE DEVELOPED IN THE FUTURE.

4VLS COMPETITION GROUP WORK WITH YIN LIH THAM
PROJECTION MAPPING:
VLS is a video mapping competition we participate during the semester. The aim is to create narrative motion graphic produced in Processing, cooperating with interactive sound system in MAX, eventually video mapping onto the given geometry in 3D Max and editting the video clip in Adobe After Effects.

NARRATIVE:
Marching Lines
Boxes are hiding in the darkness. At a sudden, light evokes the space.Animation of vertical and horizontally lines are mapped on the boxes surface,creating a ‘marching effect’. The second phrase is ‘chaos’, a noise value added into the scipt to produce a crossing-line effect. As music approaches the climate, the third phrase is lines imitate the agent behavior, bloom from the center. Scene darkens again.

Different forms of ‘agent’ are experimented in those sketches to explore theeffect of generative art. The codes of rotating lines (left) and noise curves(right) are cited from Generative Gestaltung.
Parameters/global variables are adjusted/contrained within the set range as an elaboration of the original flocking behavior.

Using MAX to record the real time video record, and setup several windows to adjust visual effects and scales. This could also be done interactively with real time sound or pre-recorded music.

3.1INDIVIDUAL INSTALLATION PROPOSAL V1 GROUP WORK WITH YIN LIH THAM
PHENOMENAL CAVERN
CONCEPT:‘Phenomenal Cavern’ is an interactive environment designed in simulation to natural phenom-enon (i.e. water environment, raining, draught, and snowing scenarios).The intention behind this installation is to create an ultimate user experience where natural enti-ties are able to interact with human being and responding to the people’s movement. An abstract cavern form of space is deliberated to resemble a natural setting. This scheme seeks to challenge ones illusion and belief, and it is further enhanced with the effect of space distortion created by projections whenever the scene changes.
FUNCTION:The presence of a visitor in the cavern is detected by sensors. Agents of natural phenomenal (i.e. water ripples, rain droplets, draught cracks and snowflakes) will react and attracted to the location point of the visitor. The movement of visitors are tracked and followed by the agents with different quality of consequences. Different agents behave in a different manner as according to its natural characteristics in the real world. The agents will however attracted to a point when scene changes and moving away from visitors.

‘+’ is the replaced agent form in this sketch to resemble water particles. The attractor is meant to be the location of visitor’s hands detected by camera. In the stable mode, the brightness of ‘+’ changes accord-ing to the background sound volume (droplet sound creating a blinking visual effect)

REFLECTION:
Technical issues are the biggest challenges in this proposal. The interactive procedure requires a system connection in between Processing and MAX/MSP. Kinetic detection and positioning of camera and sensors are another difficulties we encountered.

THE BRIEF OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DESIGN A FUTURE PRIMARY SCHOOL IN A GROWING NEIGHBORHOOD IN DOWNTOWN SEATTLE. THE SCHOOL IS DESIGNED TO EXPRESS THE SEATTLE CENTRAL URBAN CORE’S LIVEABLE FURTURE FOR FAMILIES AND COMMUNITY’S CHILDREN. THE SCHOOL FOR APPROXIMATELY 600 CHILDREN IN SIX ELEMENTARY, KINDERGARTEN TRHOUGH FIFTH GRADES, CONSISTS OF A REASONABLE TRADITIONAL MIX OF CLASSROOMS AND JOINT STUDY ROOMS AND SPECIALIZED CLASSROOMS. THE SCHOOL ALSO INCLUDES A COMMUNITY VENUE THAT TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THE DUAL USE OF RELEVANT FACILITIES.

LEVEL 1‘Identity’A school located in an urban area is a language itself speaks to the pedestrians, the community and the surroundednature. The ground �oor is about the human scale, the public realm and the visibility and connection between insideand outside.

LEVEL 2‘Living’ The second �oor is the living room of the school. Entered from the central staircase, every student will arrive at thisliving �oor to check out the school bulletins before they head towards the main circulation stairs. Main sta� room and commons are also located on this �oor. Abundant natural daylight occupies this level.

LEVEL 3‘School Bell’ Classrooms start on from this �oor. Each level contains two grades/classroom wings. On the east side is the �exible learning center, which is comprised of the library, computer stations and various kinds of study tables and rooms.

Each classroom wing does have its own shared space. The share spaces are multi-purposed spaces, and can bearranged into an assembly space or a casual breakout space. The corridors located at the north wings have studydeck along the glass wall for children to do multi-tasks. Those spaces mainly function as a bu�ering zone.

Specialised classrooms are allocated on this �oor. Those rooms contain movable partitions for �exible uses. All classroom has storage space along the walls and a storage room on each �oor.

‘The Memory’
LEVEL 6 / ROOF
On the roof �oor, there are the kindergarten classrooms, art room and playgrounds. The kindergarten childrenhave their own roof playground. While on the southern side, it is the roof playground and garden for the elder students. Fresh air, green garden, sky light to peek down, roof is the place for them to have the bestchildrenhood memory.

MASTER ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN (UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON)ARCH 500 CENTER FOR ACTIVE FUTURES
THIS IS A MIXED URBAN DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE STUDIO ON REDEVELOPMENT OF OPEN SPACES AT SEATTLE’S MOST RACIALLY AND ETHNICALLY DIVERSE NEIGHBORHOOD. IN A GROUP OF FOUR, EACH OF US WERE DESIGNING AN INSTITU-TIONAL BUILDING, PLUS TWO FUTURE BUILDINGS FOR THIS NEIGHBORHOOD.
THE ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAM OF THE CENTER FOR ACTIVE FUTURES IS A COMMUNITY NUTRIONAL CENTER, CONSIST-ING LOCAL NUTRITION LABS AND WORSHOP ROOMS, VARIES OF EXERCISE STUDIO ROOMS AND A BASEMENT SWIMMING POOL.
THE CONCEPT OF THE DESIGN IS TO HAVE PRIMARY GRID FUNCTIONED BOTH STRUCTURALLY AND AESTHETICALLY. ALL THE STUDIO ROOMS ARE PLUG-INS INTO THAT GRID. A CENTRAL CORRIDOR IS A PUBLIC PATHWAY CONNECTING THE PLAZA (FROM URBAN DESIGN) AND THE OTHER TRAFFIC END. THEREFORE, IT CARRIES THE URBAN PEAMIBILITY INSIDE THIS INSITUTIONAL BUILDING, THIS IS ALSO REFLECTED IN THE SELECTION OF ITS FACADE MATERIAL BEING TRANSLU-CENT AND LIGHTWEIGHT TO REVEAL THE GRID STRUCTURE BEHIND.

THE FACADE IS A POLYCARBONATE CLADDING SYSTEM ATTACHED TO THE PRIMARY GRID STRUCTURE. THIS TRANSLUCANT MATERIAL IS CHOSEN TO ELIMINATE NOISE FROM OUTSIDE, CONTROL DIRECT SUNLIGHT, BUT ALLOWS FULLY PENETRATION OF NATURAL DAYLIGHT. AT NIGHT TIME, THE BULIDING IS ALSO LEAVING A GLOWING EFFECT FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD. CLEAR WINDOW OPENINGS ARE VERY LIMITED IN THE DESIGN AND ONLY LOCATED FOR SPECIFIC VIEWPOINTS.

HUMAN & ENVIRONMENT RELATIONSHIP IS ALWAYS AN INTERESTING TOPIC TO ME. ENVIRONMENTS / SPACE HAS A STRONG IMPACT ON DWELLERS IN ANY SCALES. URBAN ENVIRONMENT SPECIALLY AFFECTS HUMAN BEHAVIOR AND EMOTION. NOWADAYS WITH A HIGH-SPEED SOCIAL PACE, COULD ARCHITECTURE PERFROM A FUNCTION OF ‘HEALING’?
PHYSICAL MODEL DEMONSTRATES A SIMPLE DWELLING SPACE FOR MEDITATION AND MIND CALMING
UDG INTERNSHIPZAOZHUANG CULTURAL COMPLEX
THIS IS ONE OF THE PROJECTS I HAVE BEEN TAKEN PART IN DURING MY INTERNSHIP IN EARLY 2011. THIS WHOLE COM-PLEX COMPOSED OF FIVE MAJOR BUILDIINGS - THEATRE, MEDIA CENTRE + OFFICE TOWER, YOUTH CENTRE, LIBRARY AND MUSEUM. IN THIS PROJECT, I ALSO INVOLVED IN WORKING WITH A BIM MODELLING TEAM, AND LANDSCAPE DE-PARTMENT TO PROCESS EACH DESIGN STAGES, EACH BUILDING DETAILS. IT IS A GREAT EXPERIENCE TO LOOK AT LARGE SCALE PLANNING AND INTERGRATED DESIGN WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS.

THE CONCEPT OF THIS EDUCATION FACILITY BUILDING IS ‘ITSELF AS A TEACHING TOOL’. THEREFORE A STRONG FOCUS ON FORM, SHAPE AND STRUCTURE IS DEMONSTRATED THROUGH VARIOUS BUILDING ELEMENTS, SUCH AS CANTILEVER, BRIDGE, TRIPLE-STOREY VOID AND SO ON. THE PURPOSE IS TO EXPOSE MATERIAL AND STRUCTURE TO REFLECT ON THE CONTEXT OF A CIVIL AND TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT. AS WELL AS TO CREATE A VIVID STUDENT COMMUNUAL SPACE WITHIN THE BLOCKS.
