Use of developing conventions...

Female reminiscing about the past in her home all alone, emphasises on the emptiness and isolation of her life and gives off an upsetting and lonely image.

The Break UpAdele – Rolling In The Deep Taylor Swift -Tear Drops

JessieJ- Who You Are Katy Perry – One That Got AwayLeona Lewis – Bleeding Love

Here are scenes from different songs within our genre of music. Each song has the female artist sitting alone in their bedrooms singing, however we have developed this convention by having our main artist sitting on the sofa in her living room. This allows us to feature different locations within our music video , yet still allowing us to give of an isolated and abandoned image.

Editing techniques; use of focusing on a photograph and then zooming into that still picture in order to create a new scene, where the picture then comes to life. This allows us to use different techniques in order to show a past memory.

The Break Up

Chipmunk – Oopsie Daisy

When showing a flash back we developed on the normal convention of Chipmunks, ‘Oopsie Daisy’ music video. Usually, music videos of the same genre as ‘The Break Up’ show flash backs where the main artist looks back at their life by reacting the scene whilst looking over at the same time. The past act that has been reacted gradually disappears showing that it is a memory. We developed this convention by using a zoom into the picture affect. By zooming into a still picture, it stresses on the message that we want the audience to acknowledge the fact that it is a memory and that the artist is thinking about that picture.

During the first chorus, our main female artist looks at the camera whilst singing. However, this is not done continuously as she moves from looking at the picture frame and then straight into the camera lens which is a form of ‘direct address.’

JessieJ- Who You Are

The Break Up

The use of ‘direct address’ allows the audiences to feel and acknowledge the pain that the artist is going through, as if the artist is singing the lyrics to them. However, we developed the convention of only looking straight at the camera and singing by having our artist look at the camera and then back down at her picture frame. This allows the audience to feel her pain whilst still knowing that she is upset due to the photograph inside of the photo frame which shows that we have developed the convention.‘Who You Are,’ by the well known RNB artist JessieJ uses the convention where she only sings into the camera. This allows the audience to see her facial expressions, due to the close up on her face yet still understanding the concept of the music video. Our music video also includes this, however, we have also shown why the artist is feeling upset in the same scene by making her also look down at the frame and sing.

Use of challenging conventions...

Our techniques of using stop motion in order to show a flashback is very unique and challenges the conventions as most music videos of the same genre of our music video do not use this technique. Instead, they use the typical black and white effects which we also added to our second stop motion in order to add to the fact that we were representing a n emotional flash back.

By using ‘stop motion’ we were able to recreate the scene that we zoomed into by using many pictures. By doing this, the audience are able to understand what the main artist was looking at in the picture and what she was remembering allowing us to make the memory come to life. Even though we created a flash back, we challenged the convention as through researching, no other music video of our genre used stop motion.

Our chorus is filmed within the artists house throughout the whole song. This challenges the conventions of our genre of music as the chorus’s are mostly filmed in a variety of places in order to show more locations. Therefore we decided to challenge this convention as the chorus lyrics are associated with the main female artist feeling deserted by her boyfriend, where she feels lonely and cut off from the outside world. Therefore, to highlight the message of the chorus, we found it more suitable to keep her alone in her house surrounded by just her memories.
