Having the opening scene of the main female tearing down her pictures of friends and family off the wall allows us to show her upset actions. Where as the last scene is of her ‘boyfriend’ leaving and walking away from her. Here we have used a unique opening scene, however have ended the music video with a typical love story music video convention.

The Break Up Adele – Someone Like You Beyonce – Best Thing I Never Had

We challenged the typical theory of opening the music video with a wide shot, allowing the audience to see where the scene is shot, showing the location and the surroundings. Instead, we opened the scene using a ‘point of view’ shot of the artist tearing down her pictures off the wall. However, when ending the scene, we used the similar convention of having someone walk away from the scene. In ‘The Break Up’ the main male actor is walking away from the main artists house showing that their relationship is over. ‘Someone Like You’ shows the man also walking away from the main artist, showing that he no longer wants to be apart of her life. ‘Best Thing I Never Had’ shows that Beyonce is walking away from her past life and decisions in order to get on with her life where she is going to get married.

Use of splitting the screen also challenges the conventions of our genre of music videos. This is because in order to show that our main female artist and male actor were on the phone speaking to each other we showed them both on one screen at the same time.

Soulja Boy – Kiss Me Thru The Phone

We challenged the convention of having fast cuts when speaking on the phone. In ‘Kiss Me Thru The Phone’ by RNB artist ‘Soulja Boy,’ the main female artist is speaking to Soulja Boy on the phone, however, in order to show the audience that they are speaking to each other, the camera cuts from scene to scene various amounts of times in order to portray this message. On the other hand, our split screen technique allows the audience to acknowledge that both female artist and male actor are speaking to one another by phone much faster and the message is clearer.
