What have you learned from your audience feedback?

From Faheem Patel

Initial Audience research - Psychographic

• We decided to make our target audience teenagers and adults aging from around 18-25 and this was because our cast was around this age and therefore we felt it would be more efficient to make a music video that catered to this audience. Also this allowed us to have proper input into our music video as we fall into this category we had a rough idea of what both males and females of this age range are interested in, in terms of music and also music video’s.

Audience research

• Our decision to tackle this target audience was because we where aware of maslow’s hierachy which consists of five categories that a product needs to fill in order to make the consumer comfortable with that product and these are:

• Physiological needs.• Safety and security.• Love and belonging.• Self esteem.• Self actualization.• Firstly we felt as though as we fall into our target audience it

would be easier to cater for this audience as we are roughly aware of there likes and dislikes.

Audience research - Demographic

• We didn't specify a certain ethnic group from our demographic profiling but we are quite sure based on our audience research questionnaire that we are targeting all ethnicities because a few where asked.

• Also we asked a split of both males and females (aside from 1) and found consistent results in interest between genders in music and therefore this music video is for both.

• Finally the socio economic status we are mainly targeting is C – E as this is the main category that people of this age fall into as they are in study, just starting work etc.

The initial research

• The initial research that we did was to hand out a questionnaire to 15 people aged between 18 – 25 which was our target audience in order to get there views on music preference.

• There where 8 questions within our questionnaire and these where the results:

• 1. What’s your favourite genre of music?• 2. Do you prefer a linear narrative within the music video?• 3. Would you pay more interest to a music video with humour?• 4. Does the look of the artist matter to you?• 5. Does the narrative of the music video effect your liking of that song?• 6. Would you prefer to see a music video with many effects?• 7. Would you prefer the narrative to match the song or does it not matter?• 8. Would it matter to you if the music video was about a serious issue?

What’s your favourite genre of music?

These where the four genre’s that we decided we could do and so based on these we asked this and the majority chose dance therefore we decided to do a dance music video and luckily its secondary genre was Rnb which was the second most popular choice based on our feedback.

We needed to be aware as to what type of a narrative we needed to construct in order to gain maximum attention from our target audience and the results where that a majority of 12 out of 15 people said they enjoyed a linear narrative more and therefore this was how we constructed the narrative.

We where really eager to add humour to our music video and therefore we asked this question to see if our target audience would enjoy watching a slightly humorous video and to our favour we found that they do.

Does the look of the artist matter to you?

We where aware that the artist is very important we just needed to confirm how great of a focus we had to place on him in terms of his look and it was found that the audience largely base there opinion on the look of the audience in deciding whether they like a music video.

Does the narrative of the music video effect your liking of that song?

Just in case we had to be sure on whether if the narrative was not to the target audiences liking then whether if it would effect the song and although the results seem close at 9 saying yes and 6 saying no this gave us the needed information and also determination as to creating a very impressive and appealing narrative.

Would you prefer to see a music video with many effects?

We needed to be aware of how technical to make our music video as modern day video’s contain many effects in them and we needed to be certain of that impact on our target audience and whether if it would be better to add these effects or to see if not adding them would take away from that professional look of the video however most of the people replied yes that they would like to see effects in the video.

Would you prefer the narrative to match the song or does it not matter?

Doesn't matter

In order to create an appealing narrative then we needed to know what we can put in the narrative so the audiences would like it as it is becoming increasingly popular with modern day music videos based on research that the narrative is an open canvas which means anything can happen in a music video even if it does not the reflect the song and as our target audience replied that they would like to see some overlap between the narrative and the song this helped shape our narrative.

Would it matter to you if the music video was about a serious issue?

We really wanted to create something different and so we decided if the target audience would watch it then we would try and hit a serious issue about something which we later decided but we needed to know whether an audience would watch a video like this and the majority decided they would still watch a video as such and it would not bother them.

Page 14: Evaluation 3

How we set out to appeal to them

• We used a range of techniques in order to appeal to our target audience and this task was much easier then expected as we fall into our target audience we where aware of many of there interest and therefore the ideas we offered them came down well and this helped us a lot in the creation of our music video.

• One of the main techniques we used in order to appeal to our target audience was humour and this was to grab there interest and also enlighten the narrative to our music video.

• Another technique we used where irregular effects which where used to outline are artist but also so the music video seemed modern and in keeping with current music video’s which we knew would appeal to our audience.

Final audience Feedback

After the music video was created we gave out a questionnaire on how our target audience (test group) enjoyed it and we gained much feedback mostly positive and some negative comments.

Questionnaire

Page 17: Evaluation 3

• We received both positive and negative feedback we where pleased to see that the majority of our audience enjoyed our music video and ancillary tasks thoroughly as we received comments like:

Page 18: Evaluation 3

• We where very pleased with the positive comments listed below are a few.

This was one of the many comments left about our music video as so this was a relief as the target audience seemed to enjoy it.

We where also very pleased to read that the brand image had been seen and so the way in which we constructed our video and ancillary tasks was successful.

Another concept we where extremely pleased to read was that people understood the concept of our music video as written to the left the person was interested by the “dream like events” this was a very positive comment.

The artist we had created also received numerous positive comments and we where very pleased to hear that his image was a success and seemed “professional.”

Page 19: Evaluation 3

• At the same time we also received some constructive criticism which we appreciated.

Some constructive criticism we received where that some aspects which we also found upon closer viewing where that the lip syncing was very slightly out however, this is undetectable upon a casual viewing.

Also a few negative comments about the artist where that some of the target audience felt he didn’t have enough swagger which they have come to expect from modern day artists.

A slight fear we had was that some viewers may be unable to grasp the narrative straight away and unfortunately this was one of the criticisms that we received.

We seemed very pleased with our dig pack however, one criticism we received from a viewer where that they wanted to see a more variety.

My views

• Overall I was very pleased with the feedback received as the majority of it was very positive whilst at the same time I received some expected criticism and some which i didn’t expect. However, I am happy with my project and I feel I have done a good job.
