What are the technical qualities of your work?

The technical qualities of my work are those which I have designed and created myself. The most technical and creative idea I had was for the magazine poster. I designed a car on a race track pattern background. This was to represent the energy which the drink gives people.

I created the car using a Rota-scoping method. An original image from Google which was then re-designed using a variety of shapes with different colours.

When Rota-scoping this image, I found that adding strokes to each shape made the car look much more professionally made. Without the stroke, the car seemed to look flat and odd.

To create the racing banner, I first used the custom shape tool, to get the banner.

However this just came as an original shape without the pattern I was wanting.

Therefore I had to create this myself. I did this by adding lots of rulers to get the square shapes, the rulers helped the squares become the same size throughout the banner. When all the squares were set, I then added the actual squares by using the rectangular marquee tool. I made sure that there was a pattern flowing throughout the banner and that there would not be two colours directly next to each other.

The fonts I used across all pieces of work all fit in together because there was only 2 different ones which I chose to use. There was a font for the nutritional side as well as the URL’s for websites etc. Where as the second font was for the tag line, logo and slogan. I thought this would be a good idea so that all the work tied in nicely together to make it much nicer and professional.

What are the aesthetic qualities of your work?

Starting with my magazine advert, I think that the technical qualities are good, however the aesthetic qualities are below average and it could look a lot better. If I was to work on this advert again, I would design it again so that it all fit in together, it would then be a lot more easier to understand the purpose.

However, I think that the website banner looks a lot better, more professional and very much tidier. Although this piece of work is much more plain and simple, it does look lot better than the magazine advert does.

I am still very undecided which website banner I would like to use, therefore I am looking from a point of view from both banners. I think that I would use the top banner as it includes the slogan, which is probably a good idea as a slogan becomes very important for a product.

I think that I product packaging has been put together very nicely. This is definitely my favourite piece of work for this project. This is because I had much more enthusiastic for the product at the beginning of the project.

I like the progression which this piece of work had. As this packaging looked very poor to when I had finished doing mini evaluations and put more effort into it.

The thing that makes this can work most of all, is the colours. The colours are definitely the thing that links the can together and makes it look professional.

As time passes as i forget all the ideas which I had at the first. In the future when I am working on things like this, I will be sure to write down all my ideas. I think that this is a very good idea so that I do not get lost in the work.

Are there opportunities for further development in your work?

There is definitely more room for improvement on the task of creating a magazine advert. This is because, although there is plenty of detail in the design, there is so much white background which makes the poster seem very boring and unfinished.

When creating the packaging for Irn-Bru 32 I spent a lot a time on Photoshop trying to improve it so that it was up to the best standards possible. However when I look at my design now, I see that there is still quite a clear amount of space where some extra detail could have been added.

However I would not be quite sure on what details could be added as it may disturb the design I already have created and make it look tacky and unprofessional.

Are your final pieces fit for purpose?

I think that the work I created is very much fit for purpose, especially the packaging and website banner.

The magazine advert is my least favourite piece of work for this project as it does not exactly fit its purpose very well. This is because it seems to send out a message that it gives energy to have fast races, however some people are most probably not going to understand this.

This advert is still fitting its purpose well, because of the fact it is advertising the drink and giving information about the websites etc.

The point of the BRUuuuuum is the combination the cars noises, and the irn-’bru’. I thought this would be a catchy tag line which perhaps could work on further advertisement.

When writing BRUuuuuum I thought it would be best suited to do this in the same font as the logo. This would help link things together.

Page 11: Evaluation

The packaging of Irn-Bru 32 which I designed works very well in my opinion as it has all the nutritional information on, the website information and also the slogan. The slogan says a lot about the drink which will probably help sell it more.

Page 12: Evaluation

The website banner is supposed to be like an advert, just added to a smaller dimension which is then added to the top of a website. Therefore I chose to use details from my can packaging rather than my magazine advert. This is because I thought that the packaging looked much more professional than the advert did and I would rather my website banner be up to the highest standard.

My website banner includes the Barr logo, the Irn-Bru logo which I created, and my own slogan for the drink. This slogan was added to promote the drink as it says that it will keep moods away, in other words, this drink will keep you happy.

I think that website banners should have a minimum amount of detail to them as more detail should be added to the website itself.

What areas of planning and development worked well?

When I was planning my work, I decided that I wanted to use a Serif font. This fit in nicely with the theme due to it being a Scottish drink and Serif fonts being a traditional font.

However when I was creating the packaging I found that this serif font did not look very nice or professional. To which I then decided I wanted to use a Sans serif font which I think worked much better.

Another aspect of my work which worked particularly well due to planning it in advance, was the colour scheme. Before I started my production, I created numerous rectangle shapes with the word Irn bru in the middle of it. I then played around with the colours for the fonts and the rectangle, which then give me a clear idea as to which colours worked and which did not.

Worked bad Worked well

What areas of planning and development could have done with more work?

When I was planning, I wish that I would have planned the work which I actually created.

The reason I never planned the work I created is because I planned to do other work, which I then changed my mind about and did not want to develop further.

I am glad I made this decision as I think the ideas I had were very limited and I could have become stuck with things to base my design on.

However when it came to fonts, I should have definitely experimented with more to try them out, to see which worked and which did not.

What affect did you think your development stages had on your final product?

I think that the development stages helped my work a lot and I would much prefer to work like this in the future.

When I had done the first draft, I then looked for faults which I could mend. On some areas of the development stages I even asked for peer feedback which helped even more.

I feel that my work would be at a very poor standard now if I didn’t go back and look at it again. For example, when I was working on the packaging, I had done a first draft and looked it again in further detail, the second time I looked, I saw that I had wrote 32 Irn-Bru rather than Irn-Bru 32. This could have been a very big mistake throughout my work.
