Scrubs (USA, NBC/ABC)
We used some elements from the Scrubs title sequence, even though it is primarily based around a hospital setting. The concepts we used include individual character introductions and additive dissolves between the characters.

Character Profile: Alexandra
May 3, 20239
This bag shows that she shops at the high quality shop Abercrombie & Fitch, indicating her fashion conscious state. The fact that this shop isn’t British but international, shows that she is in sync with the fashion world & knows all of the best shops to buy from.
The style of her uniform doesn’t give the typical image of an average uniform as we can see from the pencil skirt & high heels which obviously aren’t correct wear for school. This shows that she cares more about looking fashionable than following the rules.
Catherine Schofield S8775 Natasha Mulhall S8637
Character Profile: Kelly
May 3, 202310
The cigarette in Kelly’s hand conforms to the stereotype of ‘scally’s’ always smoking.
The fact that Kelly is wearing a hooded jumper under her school uniform shows her need to break the rules. She is not following the uniform rules by wearing this & also by wearing no tie. This portrays her character as a rule breaker.
Catherine Schofield S8775 Natasha Mulhall S8637
Character Profile: Jed
May 3, 202311
Unlike the other characters in the show, Jed has perfect uniform showing that he follows school rules and is a bit of a goody two shoes. The fact that
he almost has his back to the camera signifies that Jed is quite a shy and reserved person.
Catherine Schofield S8775 Natasha Mulhall S8637
Character Profile: Smiffy
May 3, 202312
The fact that Smiffy has a football helps to convey the fact that he is a typical ‘ lads lad’.
Here Smiffy is wearing trainers instead of traditional school shoes, showing that he doesn’t care about breaking the rules and helps to clarify the idea that Smiffy thinks he is ‘top dog’ and doesn’t have to do what people tell him to, people have to do what he tells them to do.
The pose that Smiffy is performing shows that he likes to make a joke of things and the stance itself has a slight hint of cockiness and self assurance.

Our Location: Classroom
May 3, 202313
This particular layout of a classroom show that the character are separated from each other more than a typical classroom environment of grouped tables
The classroom setting shows that the location is a school
The colour scheme of the classroom is similar to the colour of the school uniform

Combination of products
May 3, 202314
This combination of products is particularly effective, as the use of the relationship between the main product and ancillary texts is very strong
There have been many other examples of children’s TV shows being transferred to DVD, however, a magazine counterpart has become less popular, being replaced by a website
Catherine Schofield S8775 Natasha Mulhall S8637
Grange Hill
May 3, 202315
Grange Hill is an example of a children TV show that also had a comic strip featured in several BBC related magazines, as well as a wide range of annuals.
The first four series were also released on DVD
Catherine Schofield S8775 Natasha Mulhall S8637
Britannia High
May 3, 202316
Britannia High was released onto DVD There is an interactive website (
http://www.itv.com/britanniahigh) featuring video blogs, as well as cast interviews and character fact files, similar things that would be included in a magazine
Catherine Schofield S8775 Natasha Mulhall S8637
As The Bell Rings
May 3, 202317
There was no DVD release of this series, as the style of the show would be difficult to make into an effective DVD
However, there is a fully interactive, teen friendly website (www2.disney.co.uk/DisneyChannel/asthebellrings)

Audience Feedback
May 3, 202319
We asked four different people, two boys and two girls from our target age range (11-14) what they thought about our opening sequence.
We did this to get a fair account from both male and female perspective, as we didn't want to favour a particular gender.
Each person we asked was within our age range, meaning that it would hopefully appeal to a the correct target age group.
The idea of asking the students was to see if the idea of detention appealed to, typically, middle class background “well behaved” children.

Audience Feedback (Boys)
May 3, 202320
“All the characters are so different that it makes you want to find out what they are like. As well, the teacher seems to be scary, but because we don’t get to see him, we aren’t sure. By using a high school, it means more high school children can watch it and feel like they understand and know what the characters are going through. And, for me, I have never been in detention, so it is fun to see what it is like. I really like the character played by Jack Hutchings, because he seems to be quite clever and nice, but is friends with the rebel, played by Joe Vagon. I think this would be a good TV show because it shows loads of different types of people that are found in high schools.” (Brad, 12)
I liked that the characters in the show were all so different from each other and they are forced to be with each other in detention even though normally they would never hang out together. I also liked the way that all of the characters changed into each other as they walked down the corridor and into the classroom, this looked interesting to watch. (Tom, 11)

Audience Feedback (Girls)
May 3, 202321
“I really like the character played by Tasha Mulhall, because she seems to be the naughty one out of the class. Also, all the other characters show different types of people that are usually in high schools. I think the idea of detention works really well, because if these people were just at school, they probably wouldn’t speak to one another, but in detention, they have to talk. As well, when the characters change into one another, it makes the title sequence more interesting and makes you remember it.” (Amy, 14)
I liked the idea of people who wouldn’t normally speak to each other being forced to in detention. I also liked the way that you never actually saw the teacher. This makes him seem maybe quite frightening as we have no idea what he looks like and the children looked quite shocked when he enters the room. My favourite character is the one played by Rachel Codd. I her as I think she’s quite daring to go to school dressed the way she does! But I do think that they’re are too many different stereotypes portrayed. (Lucy, 13)

Audience Feedback Summary
May 3, 202322
Overall, our piece has worked well at targeting our age group, as most of the students we asked enjoyed the piece.
The idea of dentition seemed to be appealing to some of the students, as they had never experienced it.
Using the wide range of characters seems to have worked well, as each person felt they could relate to one of the characters in some way
However, the use of these stereotypes has also not worked, as some of the student felt these were portrayed too typically; as though there are only these kinds of people at high school

Construction of our piece
May 3, 202323
Video Camera The video camera we used was a Canon XM2, which was
particularly effective as it gave our piece a clear andprofessional style of image.
Stills Camera The stills camera we used for the photo shoot that was used
on the magazine and DVD covers was a Nikon D60. We used this camera as it was able to give very high quality images, at 10 mp.
Photoshop We used Photoshop to edit our images and create our
magazine and DVD cover. This program has a wide range of tools and effect to create a professional looking image.
Premiere Pro We used Premiere Pro to edit our video. This program also has
many different effects that we were able to use to create a more professional looking piece.

Research
May 3, 202324
Internet We primarily used the internet as our form of research
for our piece. We used elements such as: Google
We used Google to search for other examples DVD and magazine covers from a wide range of sources.
YouTube We used YouTube to search for other examples of title sequences,
including Scrubs, As The Bell Rings, Grange Hill etc

Planning our piece
May 3, 202325
Internet We also used the internet for the planning stage of our
piece, by using a social networking site to create character profiles
The use of MySpace enabled us, as a team, to become more involved and understand our characters a lot more.
It also allowed a use of new media technology for our potential viewers, create an internet link between the TV show and them.
