Detective Howard Slater, House of Embers Billy Costigan, The Departed -Costigan’s clothing is more casual, this is because he doesn’t want to draw attention to himself so he can infiltrate the gang more easily. -Detective Howard Slater works in the Criminal Investigation Department of the Metropolitan Police in Woolwich, Greenwich. -William (Billy) Costigan works as an undercover Officer for the Special Investigations unit of Massachusetts’ State Police. -Slater represents the social group associated with law and enforcement. He is a middle aged, male police investigator; this conforms to the general assumption that this job is done by white, males who have key skills for the job. -Costigan is also a detective and represents the social group associated with law and enforcement, but his methods are very different, he is in the thick of the action trying to secretly infiltrate the Irish American gang. -Slater's clothes are smart and presentable which shows he is working behind a desk in an office. When he is seen by the audience -Slater has taken on the task of ‘re- investigating ‘an arson attack, this case was closed three years ago due to a lack of evidence. Slater must search for the older teenager and prove him guilty along with the younger teenager who is under police protection. Stevenson is also ‘investigating’ the case, he aims to track down and kill the teenagers as revenge. This further shows that his character -Costigan was chosen to infiltrate Frank Costello’s notorious Boston criminal organisation . He quickly becomes consumed by his double life. When it becomes clear to both the mob and the police that there's a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin are suddenly in danger of being caught and exposed to the enemy-and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save himself. -We have revealed to the audience that Slater is a Police detective by focusing on the case files sitting on his desk, we have used low lighting to conceal the rest of the room to add mystery and to add to the night time feel of the scene. -Costigan, who is a young adult, is younger than Slater but exhibits skills and expertise in his specific field of work.
