Evaluation of music magazine

Front coverThis is my front cover to my music magazine. I have interpreted the usual conventions of a music magazine, to my choice of audience to create a magazine, that would sell. The title I choose, was covered, I felt this fit in, because of its connotation, and its meaning that “everything” is “covered” in the magazine. All the information you would want to know is in there.

I decided to base my magazine on something from the front cover , you can guess its British music. Which with this gave me a colour scheme and also a lead on what to cover in the magazine. Which was helpful in creating the contents page. I followed the usual conventions by adding a bar code at the top left corner. And also including more than one artist. And giving the audience , a “tease” contents, to let them know of other bands being involved in the magazine.

…I put the main band in big bold impact font. And the band member

as the picture which has been picked out from the background and given more contrast and editing to stand out. And infers that it’s a big up and coming band. And something to read about.

I included a website, so the magazine becomes, multi media. It also has an issue number, as some people do collect magazinesI also involved, a “free poster” which is usually used to entice

the buyer, and follows the usual expectance of a magazine.I am pleased with the front cover, I feel maybe it doesn’t fit in

brilliantly with the double page however I have tried to keep the consistency with themes.

I would maybe have taken more photos to choose from for my front page, and it differs from my initial ideas greatly as I have explained in my initial ideas. However I feel this is in a positive light, and looks more realistic and formal than the one I started with.

Double page spread

• I made a more rural, rough setting for my photograph, because the singer I created, I wanted to be a young artist, who didn’t necessarily come from a wealthy background. Someone normal, so that the magazine felt les informal and more about people getting there in the music world. She is holding an electric guitar to infer, the idea of it being rock music she is making.

• I added “snippets” of information about the interview. Such as quotes taken from the column to make people want to read on, something humorous.

• Her name is in massive bold writing to infer that she’s the next big thing. There is information about her single also.

• The colour scheme fits in with the front cover, I used red to show a powerful new female artist and to keep consistency throughout the magazine, the British theme also Is incorporated into the picture.

• I added custom shapes to create more of and “Alice in wonderland” impression.

• I am pleased with the double page spread I think it looks like magazine.

• Things I would change are adding a few more pictures of the artist, have a little bit more content to it and maybe more interview questions.

• For my contents page, I used a photograph for my background, I also incorporated other photos of the artists in the picture, I used something also that is very popular with actual magazines, such as tour guides, gigs, Leeds fest line ups etc…

• I repeated the title. In the headline “ covered this week ”I feel this follows the conventions a normal magazine would follow.

• My initial idea was to follow the usual conventions, and go for a more informal look. That would appeal more to a younger audience.

• The bad thing I feel about this contents page, is it does look slight amateur and maybe could do with making it fit in more with the front cover.

• What I have included with the magazine, such as article certain news and features I am pleased with. However could do with a bit more contents.

• The language in the magazine I feel appeals to the target audience Iv set, which was mid teens+, However instead of having a complete target audience, I have also tried to appeal to older or even younger people that may read it such as by adding some serious questions you would expect to find in more serious magazine such as Q that appeals to a more adult audience and focuses on more well known bands questions such as “where did your music knowledge come from” etc... And other questions that would appeal to the younger audience such as, “ “so do you fancy any of the band members featured in the magazine”, this is a more cheeky question you would find in a teen magazine Because this information appeals to younger people . The interviews language I feel is more colloquial and informal, slightly humorous feel. Such as.. “ Your experiences?, Give us a few?” Also in the contents page I have added snappy titles to the pages such as “The lead singer that ticks all the right boxes”

• I made this decision because it follows the conventions that a young magazine would follow.
