Graphic Narrative Evaluation

Page 2: Evaluation of my book

• I did used some of my digital flat plan ideas and some from my storyboard because they are very similar. An example of this would be on page 3. On the right is my final product and you can see that I have made changes from my digital flat plan which is on the left. Some noticeable changes that I have made is that instead of having the princess looking out of the window to her crown. I have made a full room with the princess looking out of the window to her crown, so the audience can see different things in the book. I made this change because they are young so they may lose interest from not seeing very much on a page.

Does your final product reflect your original intentions?

Page 3: Evaluation of my book

• I based some ideas from my storyboard to my final product. As you can see on the fourth

slide on my storyboard the prince and the princess are galloping on a horse with the

princesses crown through the village. But on my final product I based my idea around my

storyboard idea but I added more features to the scene. On my final product which is on the

right you can see that I have added in yellow stars, grey moon, river, hills Princess Ora’s

tower and The Forest Of Doom. I added these features because the features follows through

the story. I also wanted to try and make the scene look more realistic to the reader.

How well have you constructed your images?

• I made my book by using different tools which were mainly Rotoscoping and if I had to make little changes to my images I would use the paint tool. I will first look at Princess Ora, I wanted her to look like Cinderella but not identical. So I got an image off the internet and Rotoscoped around the image and made it look similar to Cinderella seen as my book is a fairytale also. However you can see that I have used different colours from Cinderella which is on your right becasue i didnt want my princess to be exactly the same. On Princess Ora I used bright and bold colours such as pink and purple, I used these because it has been researched that young children prefer these types of colours rather than dark and gloomy.

Page 5: Evaluation of my book

• However as you can see on my image that I have Rotoscped Princess Oradoesn't have any shoes so what I could do next time was to Rotoscopesome shoes on her so it would look more realistic because when she goes out and look for her crown on page 4 it doesn't look normal. I also liked how I constructed the hair on the right image because it looks like her hair is floating in the wind. I did this by using the paint tool, by copying the princess and deleting the current hair you see your left and Rotscopingnew hair so it looks like she is moving/ searching for her crown that the wind has blown away form her window.

Page 6: Evaluation of my book

• However on page 4 which you can see below, in my story I mention that her crown gets blown out of the window but on her tower I haven't Rotoscoped a window. So the audience may ask questions about the window adn get distracted form the story . I could solve this by Rotoscoping a window on the tower then their would be no confusion as how her crown got blown out the window.

How well have you used text to anchor your images

• In my book I have used black text, this is because I found the other colours that I wanted to put in my book were to bright and you wouldn't of been able to see text because the colours would of clashed. I originally chose lighter pink. However this was because I had white space underneath this is shown on the right. I chose this colour because my book is mainly aimed at girls. My text anchors my image very well because the text follows the story and the image shown on my final product which is on your left.

Page 8: Evaluation of my book

Is your product suitable for your audience?

• My book is aimed at the ages between 4-8 and the target audience is mainly girls which I have mentioned in my audience. I think my book is suitable for my audience because of the types of words used and how my story evolves around simple sentences, in which most 4-8 year olds use. My product is also suitable for my audience because epically younger children like a cartoon style/block colour effect rather than a real-life effect. Audience

The audience will be children between the ages of 4-8years old. The book is mainly aimed at girls but boys would be interested in it as well. This is because the book is about a princess and a king. The class would be all classes because it doesn’t discriminate anything or anyone. The audience would also be parents because they have to read it to the children. The style of the text will be easy for the children to read by themselves if they want to.

What do you like/dislike about the techniques you have used?

• The techniques that I did like was Rotoscoping. This is seen on page four, where I have Rotoscoped a sun and clouds to make it look more realist and enhancing for the audience. I also like about the Rotoscoping technique is how I got Princess Ora’shair to flow in the air like she is moving.

Page 10: Evaluation of my book

• However the feature that I didn't like was the paint tool because when you made an error you couldn't delete it and go back and change it like you can while using the Rotoscoping tool.

Page 11: Evaluation of my book

• The features I liked about my final product was how the image follows through with the text. This is shown in page four.

• However the feature that I don't like about my book is that I had to use the colour black for the text. The reason that I don't like this is because it is a fairytale and it should be bright and bold.

Page 12: Evaluation of my book

What do you like/dislike about the techniques you have used?

• The features I disliked about my book were the colour of the writing. The colour I chose was black however my first chose of colour was pink because my book is aimed at mostly girls but boys as well. I changed my colour because I had to make it readable for my audience otherwise the colour would of clashed with the background

• The feature I really like is how the scenes are laid out. They weren't squeezed they were spaced out. I also liked on where the objects were placed in the scenes. For example on scene 7 I have the Princesses tower at the top right, forest below the tower, the village in the centre and the river running down the hills with the moon and the stars in the sky. I like this scene

because you can really follow the story because the text is inline with the images that the text is talking about.

Page 13: Evaluation of my book

What style have you employed in your products?

• Some similarities I have with my product that are in other products is Cinderella. This product is similar to my book because she drops her shoe after running form the ball and the prince retrieves it and then marries her. It is similar to my story because Princess Ora loses her crown and the prince finds it and they go to the ball together. which is similar to Cinderella because when she drops her slipper and the prince retrieves it and they get married. But in my story went eh princess loses her crown the prince also retrieves her slipper and they go to the ball.

• The style I have implied to my story is a classic style because fairy tales are mostly classic because the way they are written. So if I implied modern features to my story it wouldn't fit in and the audience would find it difficult to imagine the story.

Page 14: Evaluation of my book

Why did you include the content you used?

• I used bright and bold colours because as I mention in previous slides younger children has been researched that they like these types of colours rather than dark and gloomy colours. I include this content because if I didn't include these colours then it wouldn't really be suitable for my audience. Some other content i feature din my book was a wardrobe, desk and a bed, this was for the princess bedroom. I also put them in because if they are reading a fairytale/princess book and they have these features/content in their room then they will feel like a princess also.

Page 15: Evaluation of my book

What representations can be found in your work?

• The representation shown in my work is that the princess is a girl which has always been the case in fairytales because the prince is a man which helps the princess and if it was the otehr way round it wouldn't make sense. This is because stereotypically men are shown as the hero/help in fairytales rather than women because men like to be shown stronger than women.

Page 16: Evaluation of my book

What signs, symbols or codes have your used in your work?

• Choices of colour, style, locations, character design and tone all give additional meaning to your work.

• The colour I chose for my book were mainly bold and bright because my audience is for mainly girls. I chose colours like green, pink , purple, yellow, blue and black for the text and green for the text and the ground. I mainly used the bright colours because children especially like them because it represents happy, kind etc. which children like.

• The choices of characters I had in my book was a Princess, prince, crown and a horse. I only had three characters because the book was only about them so it wasn’t relevant to put anymore in to make it confusing for the viewers and even more text for them to read.

Page 17: Evaluation of my book

• The locations I chose for my book were locations in which children knew about for example I chose bedroom, hills, forest and flat grounds in which children see or go to on a trip or family walk etc. I chose these because I knew they wouldn’t be scared of them and I knew it would be suitable for my book and for my audience. Also the locations for my book are simple and then they would remember the story if they saw one of these locations.

• The theme I chose to use was classic because most fairytales have classic features in them such as primary colours and simple shapes which my book does.

What were the strengths and weaknesses of the pre-production and planning

• How did the planning and research help?

• The planning helped because I was able to calculate what I needed to finish. It also helped in the change of my work. For example I changed some pages and some of the story to fit in with the pages that I had changed. The research also helped me because it gave me ideas of what story to write and what target audience to aim for.

• How well did you manage your time?

• I managed my time very wisely because I completed my product ahead of time. Which meant I had plenty of time to rebuild features of my product when I got feedback from my tutor.

• Reference specific examples?

• An example I had to change was the forest scene because you could still see the original picture. So I had to paint over it so you couldn't see the original picture using the paint tool. I also had to flip my horse and prince around to face the princess which he was talking to.

Historical and cultural context

• How does your work compare to what has come before? What other similar products have existed in the past? What current products exist?

• My work compares to is Cinderella. Cinderella is a product that currently exists and that has come in the past. This is similar to my book because she drops her glass slipper whilst running from the ball, but the prince returns the glass slipper and brings it to her and then she marries the prince. In my story the princesses loses her crown and the prince finds it and brings it to her and she invites him to the ball.
