What Went Well?• There are a couple of things that went well

with our given clip. For example, I think our group managed to recreate the same camera shots, movement and angles that our clip used. I also think that the actors especially the main character (Ryan) managed to keep to his role and tried to mimic the song lyrics as best as he could. I think our group managed to work well and we prepared ourselves enough to know what happens and when.

What didn’t go so well and what were some of the issues?

• There were only a couple of things that didn’t go so well during the filming and that was because we only had less than 15 minutes to make sure the clips are good enough to use. This was a lot of pressure and there were some tricky shots to capture but we tried to do this to the best of our ability. Another problem that came up was the fact that the camera movement was quite shaky. I think this would have been better if a dolly was used as there would have been a smooth, tracking shot. Another problem I realised whilst filming was that we hadn’t actually put down the timings of what shot happened at what point of our clip. This meant that when it came to editing we realised the ending didn’t go on for long enough so we had to improvise by slowing it down towards the end and fading it.

What did you learn about planning and the use of storyboard and shot lists and why are they important when out on location?

• The use of our storyboard proved very important whilst out filming. If we didn’t have a storyboard with exact screenshots of what to do then this would have been much harder to create and would have possibly been quite unsuccessful. Another good reason to have a detailed storyboard is because its less time consuming and you can get the actors in the exact places they need to be in.

List three things you need to think about whilst filming performance.

• One thing that needs to be considered is the framing. You need to be aware of what’s in the background of the frame and whether or not they’re supposed to be there. For example, any extra people that are clearly not supposed to be in the background or props/equipment that aren’t included in the section that you are doing. This then leads on to composition which means where the subject(s) is situated within the frame. For this clip we had to make sure the actors were tight together and centred in frame. Another factor that should be considered is the movement of the camera. In this music video the camera looked hand held so therefore there wasn’t moving completely smoothly, it gave a sense of realism of the clip.

What lessons did you learn about directing people in front of camera, what information

do they need to know about the performance and how can the director get them to relax in

front of the camera?• The biggest lesson I learnt whilst directing people is that you need

to be precise on what you’re saying. For example you can’t just say ‘go’ and expect the actor(s) to know what you are talking about, you have to be precise and say ‘walk towards me at a slow pace, whilst singing along to this section of the song’ because there could be a chance that they are unsure on what to do or could become very uncomfortable. The actors need to know what character they need to portray, in this case how the character walks and be confident of the performance style so in order to do this the actor will have to familiarise their selves with the music video and we learnt that this is also a good reason as to why the storyboard is handy. The director can then make the actor comfortable and relax in front of the camera by allowing them to take their time to an extent on what has been asked to do. If the director rushes or gets annoyed with the actor then this won’t make them feel any more better and it could potentially put too much pressure on them.

Evaluation of our clip• Within our clip there were two problems

that didn’t quite work when it came to editing. The first problem was the camera movement during the zoom on the main singer/actor glitches quite a bit and it wasn’t as smooth as it could have been. Another problem was the lip syncing, when it came to editing the clip it was hard to sync the lip movement to the song as the timings of the shots was slightly off.
