How effective is the combination of your main

product and ancillary texts?

Question 2

Radio TimesFor my magazine cover, I made the decision to create a ‘Radio Times’ cover.

Radio TimesFor my magazine cover, I made the decision to create a ‘Radio Times’ cover. This was because the target audience of the Radio Times cover is very similar to our own from Surrey Side. Radio Times target audience is predominantly ABC1 and ours BC1C2, this means that we would be able to sue the magazine as a main resource to market our new Soap Opera coming to BBC Two.

Also Radio Times as originally a BBC magazine so there would be an existing relationship between the two brands.

To do this effectively I researched the contemporary examples of their front covers as they will often change their styles from year to year. This was to ensure that I could design and create my magazine cover to be as close to real as possible.

On the front cover they use a mix of Serif and San-serif

fonts.

On the more recent covers the background of the image will be an on set image from the show that they are promoting, in this

case ‘Surrey Side’

Radio TimesI chose the character ‘Callum Lowe’ to appear on the front

cover of the magazine as I felt that I could represent his

character the most effective using on an image. So that the audience to get a sense of his

character. I did this by having his hood up over his head as this is usually

associated with a thug or troublesome teen, which is

exactly what Callum is.

I decided to shoot Liam with the flats in the background, this is

because these flats are the source of all of the conflict in our

soap and I felt that it would be an appropriate method of giving the audience a sense of location

with the river as well.

PosterFor my poster I decided that I would create a 6 sheet or Bus stop poster, this was because from my research on BBC two and BBC posters there was a clear preference of portrait posters over landscape.

The research was difficult however as BBC do not often use posters as a method of marketing their TV programmes, so there were minimal example that I could use for research.

The research was difficult however as BBC do not often use posters as a method of marketing their TV programmes, so there were minimal example that I could use for research.Though there was one show called ‘Peaky Blinders’ where they used a series of posters with very similar look and layout to market the show.

PosterFrom my research I did find that BBC would use a simply layout using a single image with usually one or many two characters in shot.

The composition of the character however varies drastically as some are with an Extreme Close up, with the character addressing the camera and others Long shot with the character looking away from the camera.

PosterFor my poster I decide that I wold go with an Extreme Long shot that would allow me to represent the character as much as I could.

I had my character positioned with his back to the river in the background as well as a slight view of the flats, again this would help give the audience a sense of location.

With Alex’s costume I made the decision to have him in a hooded jacket, but with his hood down. This would help show that he is not a country dweller but a townie, whilst also representing that he is not a thug as the hood is not up.

I composed him so that we could get a full view of his costume as this was my main source of his representation.
